  • During the time of the late Shang dynasty, the kings who ruled the land were merciless, and constantly fought battles and killed their feudal vassals to secure power. One of the feudal vassals killed was the king of Zhou, and after his death, his son Chang Ji inherited the throne. Chang Ji was a man of high moral standards and treated his people well, which made him famous and became known as a sage.
    The current King of Shang, Di Xin, grew afraid and jealous, so he eventually tricked Chang Ji into visiting his empire and later arrested him. Di Xin wished to kill Chang Ji, but it was not allowed to kill a “sage” without reason. So he let him rot in prison.

    I am a Chinese. Thanks for your loving I Ching. I can tell you that I Ching was created by Fu Hsi. But he only left symbols without any language or translation, because he didn't want the I Ching to be constrained by the language. And Chang Ji did the work translating the symbols into language.

    I think it should be epiphany, not apocalypse.

    • @Alkis05
      @Alkis05 3 года назад +1

      Apocalypse really means revelation, from the Greek (which was the language that the new testament was written). That is why in the bible it is also known as "the book of revelations".
      The Idea of the world ending with a rupture, actually is more represented by the word "eschatology" which is the study of the end of things, like afterlife or the end of times. Eschatological was the adjective used to describe the prophets at the time of Jesus. "Eschatological apocalypse", revelations about the end of times.

    Very nice!!! Animation plus good narration is a very good way to learn. However, @ 1:07, did she say he experienced an "apocalypse"? Not sure about word usage.

    • @RebelJC
      @RebelJC 6 лет назад +11

      Apocalypse means revelation or revealing, so I think it works. We only use it to mean end times today because the Book of Revelation (end times Christian prophesy) is also called the Apocalypse of Jesus Christ.

    • @johnokamoto6762
      @johnokamoto6762 6 лет назад

      Little used definition, but the roots of the word means an uncovering, so something revealed that was hidden. Similar but slightly different from having an epiphany which is sometimes used although an epiphany doesn't have to be revealed to someone by someone else if memory serves .

    • @MelissaBrownapt215
      @MelissaBrownapt215 6 лет назад +4

      JuandelaCruz001- Given the evolution of word meanings, this not an ideal word choice, even if it means "uncovering" literally. That makes the usage archaic in this context. The short story format tends to call for the familiar to make for very clear narratives.

    • @zhubajie6940
      @zhubajie6940 6 лет назад +5

      In modern usage, epiphany or revelation would have probably been better for modern use. The word apocalypse to mean revelation is as about as archaic as using the word passion for suffering. Shakespeare and the writers of the King James Bible would have been at home with it but in today's world, it is more applied to a final destruction as in nuclear apocalypse.

    • @JuandelaCruz001
      @JuandelaCruz001 6 лет назад

      Zhu Bajie Exactly my point! I threw it out there just to spark a healthy discussion. Ah, the nuances of word usage.

  • @jeremiahcastro9700
    @jeremiahcastro9700 4 года назад +2

    This is exactly why I love to look into the origins of teachings like the _I Ching_ and the _Tao Te Ching._ The modern followers usually stray far from the original teachings of the ancient sages. And usually this is because the wannabe mystics (diviners, psychics, shamans, hippies, yogis, etc.) love to mix in their mumbo jumbo. And then intellectuals....well they miss the mark as well when they try to categorize The Way and Change as some type of religion or "mystic teaching". Thus they end up dismissing it as some "riddle".

  • @jeremiahcastro9700

    *So in essence* the _I Ching_ was never meant to predict the future but, rather Express the changes that occur in nature when man follows or or abandons the Tao (i.e. The Way). And these changes are reflected in yin and yang which the Yellow Emperor calls the two principles in his book _The Four Canons of the Yellow Emperor._

    When the trigrams were put together they were now reffered to as hexagrams... the book of change originally was really for cultural purposes, and how to rule the country, the 64 hexagrams should get more emphasis because later on interpreted by King Wen then they are also used by Confucius appended kua text to the 64 hexagrams.

    He experienced an epiphany, not an apocalypse. An apocalypse is the total final destruction of the world. You mean a revelation. He also didn't "see into the future" to know about the meatballs as they had already been made. He had prophetic knowledge of what had actually happened.

  • @ColonelCustard

    Can you do a video about Dian Wei please? Tell us about his life and the last stand that I’ve just heard about in a different video. I was watching 7 ONE MAN last stands on IDocs TV RUclips channel if you want to know what I’m talking about lol. Where 1 man killed a lot of people. Eg a Viking (his name wasn’t known) at Stamford Bridge in 1066 that killed 40 men and held the English back for an hour on his own, sadly though someone went under the bridge and stabbed him through the planks on the bridge and into the groin. Though the English won anyway, putting an end to the Viking golden age. I know you wouldn’t be able to give more details regarding Dian Wei and his great last stand 🙂.

      Understanding female characters as currency, and developing on a seemingly smart idea rather than realizing the actual slavery, makes the legend sound like a complete product of imagination. Some aspects got neglected in order to prove the hero right. Of course, this all relates to that "innocent mysoginy" of the time, and YES, people of youtube, YES you are free to notice ignorance and flaws when you are confronted with it. And you can recognize the cruelty and magnificience and impressive wisdom of the whole story still, just as much as you constantly recognize our modern culture has both developed and empoverished on different aspects.
      It's ok to have an opinion.
