Today I am opening up an art advent calendar from the UK (England/Britain) versus the USA (America) an artist advent is a really fun craft / crafty way to open a surprise mystery inside. I've opened a few before namely by Arteza but one of these art advents is AWFUL and I can't believe it exists lol it isn't because of where it is from so much as the store I bought it from. I'm sure there are many better arty craft advents you can buy in the USA! Let me know if you see them. Arteza for example is phenomenal.

Same here! I was bullied so badly at school I was threatening the big S, aged 7. When the school tried to set up friends for me the only ones that volunteered were nasty girls wanting to look good. One of the bullies threw water over Simon Cowell in the audition stage of something, I've never seen the video of it but someone else who knew her delighted in telling me what happened 😆

@@zarahearts someone who moved a lot and subsequently homeschooled (practically begged my mum to because I hated school and had no friends who seemed to be like I was in my class of 23 kids lol) the advice I will give to my kids and to others in a similar situation -
Relay to him that sometimes people make friends when they are older, and those friends are usually the friends that last forever. That it’s okay and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with not having lots of friends at school or friends outside of school. Friends are hard to find! Even as an adult. But you want quality of friends over quantity, always. Sometimes it better to wait to find amazing friends than rush to make bad ones. You have a long time to make friends! It won’t always be easy for him to accept but he will understand when he’s older. If he’s told from a young age that it’s TOTALLY normal to not have tons of friends or find it hard to make friends until you are older, it’ll make him feel that it’s more normal..because it is! Having no friends doesn’t mean anything, none of us have yet to meet everyone who will be our friend in life.
Tell him that sometimes it’s hard to find that special friend who gets us and is like us, they are rarer, that’s why they are hard to find! And quality over quantity always! Often too, it’s just through lack of being around enough people to find friends!
Never take it personally if you are just not in situations to meet people your age. If he wants to play sports or dance or take cooking classes, whatever activities he wants to do in life will all be opportunities to meet people!

I grew up with advent calenders and I still love them!
When I was a kid I'd get both a chocolate one and my mother or grandmother (or they would split) would buy little gifts for each day, nothing fancy or expensive, probably what would equal to $1-3 maximum a day - and they'd have the whole year to buy the little gifts. Then when I got a little bit older I then only got the chocolate ones. Now as an adult I buy a calender that you scrape on each day to "collect" symbols in order to maybe win money. Like 10 christmas trees = 1 million DKK, 9 Santa Claus' = 50.000 DKK and so on. And this year I also bought a tea advent calender with a different tea each day instead of the chocolate one.

The kids love them, the scratch art is 100% their favourite craft to do. The craft table really helps foster a positive environment in the reading club because the kids so look forward to coming to the craft table to do their crafts after reading, which has the knock on effect of making them like reading more in general. I remember once being able to get items from the US and Canada quite cheaply because of the exchange rate - now, the pound is one to one virtually with the US dollar and then add in the postage, it makes it even more expensive. I've not bought anything from Canada recently, but the last time I looked on etsy, the postage from Canada was a lot cheaper than that from the US, and there is also issues with custom fees with items bought from the US, too.

I made friendship bracelets as a kid with no friends. I just made them as bracelets for myself. And to be fair when others made them at school they didn't make them for each other, just made them whilst sat together and shared techniques. I was really slow to make them though so would do more at home than at school.
Oh and with the beads you iron, it only needs to be a few seconds of ironing in a circular motion (don't leave iron in one place) and you don't need to apply any pressure since the heat does the job for you. Then you remove the paper, but leave the design on the pegboard to cool. Then it can be removed and to create a more permanent finish, flip it over pop the paper back on, and very gently iron the other side too (just not on the pegboard this time). If you only iron the one side, your design can break with handling. Do both and its much more likely to last. Still got some I did in the 90s for reference and the glow in the dark ones still glow!

    • @AlexaFaie
      @AlexaFaie Год назад +1

I'd be disappointed with the American one more due to how they felt that was an ok way to present the crafts (along with the price point) because once you've figured out what the crafts are meant to be, with instructions they would have been the sort of thing I'd have loved doing as a toddler/before school age. Maybe even slightly into school age. And they'd also be quite repeatable if the kid enjoyed it since those kinds of supplies are available quite cheaply. But for the price? And without instructions? Not worth it at all! And I'd have included a plastic sewing needle in there for the pompom garland as sewing them onto the string would work way better than the pva glue in the tube. I had a plastic needle sewing kit (just sew through holes on felt shapes) which I got around the age of 3/4 from a Christmas lucky dip thing they had in town. So could see a similar thing working with those pompoms since you don't really need a metal needle to get through them.

Thank you very much for another wonderfully entertaining video. This one is getting saved in my Makes Me Smile folder on RUclips. I love using the end of the paintbrush to pick up the little circle plastic things that I don't know what they were called before grabbing the tweezers. I was also bummed by the Advent calendar they didn't actually function like an Advent calendar. Just a glorified box of craft supplies. I am sorry that Friends were a hard thing to come by in your early years. Yes, I do think that RUclips friends count. So do friends that one may never have been physically in the same room with. Some of the dearest people in my life are those Who have chosen to spend intentional time with me via zoom for some other video media. I truly believe that even though we may not see each other in " real life " the intentionality of connection that happens in those kinds of meetings seems times to make the relationships that form richer than once I have with people I may physically see on a regular basis. Blessings.

now that i'm older i don't get the chocolate advent ones but i do buy myself Christmas sock ones every couple of years and usually after they go on sales later on then open them at Christmas. I have so far gotten some great socks that way. :) However there seems to be a large range of bad advent calendars in the US. I watch a lot of advent calendar videos at this time of year and the best ones do not seem to come from the US... there's some good ones but there is a lot of bad ones.

The US, is cheap, but meant to countdown to Christmas. They are usually cheap items, like UK crackers. The UK one is to be opened on Christmas and used to countdown the 12 days of Christmas, that it why it is not Christmas themed and better quality. BTW day 2 is a diamond painting bracelet.

We would have been best friends- you remind me of me at your age- if that makes sense! Lol- I would be lost in Disney, Art, Crafts- being outside and have a witty humor…. Which seemed to have lead to a relatively lonely childhood- But, looking back- I treasure those days I was in my own little bubble of creativity and wonder! (I’m maybe 8 years older than you- so that’s why I mentioned when I was your age 😂) as I wrote this I began feeling as though I am 80 hahaha.
In my 30’s and I STILL buy these types of sets to just spend a mental health day having fun! People who don’t enjoy crafty kits…. Well, they just need to lighten up and live a little.
I craft every single day of my life- working in insurance, it’s literally neccessAry to be fun and silly to keep our spirit up!
PS you should do a craft kit like Mariah and Jackie did! I’d buy one for sure!!

I would have thought the googly eyes would be stick-on, rather than something you have to glue. I bought a craft bucket from Target with very similar, albeit non-Christmas, craft supplies so I could make crafts with a two and four year old. The little dinky glue bottle is the exact same, and works about as well as it did in your video on things like pom-poms.

You such fun Chloe! I know your probably tired of this question, but would you dig into your Arthur the Bear book and bring one of your illustrations to life in paint? You can do a Watercolor or Acrylic even a Gouache painting would look nice. Just putting it out there it has been while since I mentioned this project, I just want to see what you might do and it might provide you with future art for prints too!

Hiya Chloe, sorry to say this, but neither of them are called Advent calendars which is why the USA don't open up like a regular Advent calendar does, with something behind each door. They are 12 and 25 Days of Crafting Kits. Just something to keep the young ones busy during the lead up to Christmas. But bf, we have been doing Advent calendars longer, here in the UK. xxx
