The Substance (2024) - Movie Review

- The Substance is a body horror film that takes a sickening look at beauty standards. This is not only an instant horror classic but is the boldest and wildest thing that Demi Moore has ever done in her career.

That scene where Demi Moore keeps going back to the mirror is one of the main scenes I think of when I think of this movie. It’s so heartbreaking.
It's so relatable 😢
She is amazing in that scene. My heart broke for her.
This is the BEST movie I’ve seen this year. Had to see it twice. Amazing
Movie has been a breath of fresh air
one of the worst movies I've seen in my life...empty and stupid
I left the cinema thinking THAT’S what cinema is all about. Absolutely remarkable
Yes
This is the most positive Cody’s been on a new release since Heretic! Wait…
Hahaha it’s been a good week.
Now I want to see Heretic after Cody's positive review. Trailer has me intrigued. Not many films on religion are done well but this one seems to have deeper creative layers to it.
His positive review has me intrigued to see heretic. It seems to have deeper meanings and looks good.
The bar has been set. Not just for this year, but horror in general. This is absolutely masterful and unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Seeing it again tonight cause it’s THAT good!
I love to see something that is different, original, shocking, and creative. Independent films are usually better stories and push the envelope. I felt similarly surprised with when evil lurks, foreign films, and strange darling. I am over soulless prequels and remakes.
I’m gonna watch it again next week
It’s really not that good. Never seen a director talk down to an audience this much in my life 😭. Not only when we meet the older version of the doctor does the camera zoom in on his birth mark several times, he also drops his card on the floor with a close up on his number. Sloppy movie making at its finest!!
Legit 10/10 I never would of thought I would be saying that about a horror film in 2024 because the last time I had a 10/10 horror was from the 90s 🙃
@@g1zmo833sloppy? I don’t know what film you watched??
The scene where Elizabeth keeps going back to fix her hair and makeup, hide parts of her body and eventually feel too ugly to go on her date to just stay home and feel depressed hit me so hard because I have been there before! I've felt this insecurity many times in my life and have cancelled plans because I felt too ugly.
I like to believe that if Elizabeth didn't allow her insecurities to get the better of her, the date she went on would show her that they are people who care about her, warts and all. She would canceled the substance subscription and tell her sleezy former boss and the industry as a whole to stick it where the sun doesn't shine.
@@alienboy1322yeah this movie made me think.. cause I’ve seen a lot of girls feel like old hags at age 25 cause they see posts online from men or the redpill community like Andrew Tate stuff, and they feel insecure about themselves. Cause in the movie Dennis Quad says that a woman’s fertility stops at age 25 I think that’s what he said lol. So it just resonated cause I’ve seen some girls say that on forums online or like reddit posts where their like 23 yrs old, and feel like they aren’t good enough or their time is up. Which is sad.. I’ve just seen a mass amount of young people say they are old, and their like 21 😂
@vmarie22456 Those channels and spaces only exist because of how much men have been crapped on for the past 15 years or so, making them feel worthless and making women overestimate their own worth and have ridiculous standards.
And for certain types of women, those who do want to live a more traditional and wholesome family life; have more than just 1 or 2 kids, it IS better to settle down and marry younger. Hook up culture is just terrible for EVERYONE, but it REALLY ruins the lives of so many women.

I think all women can relate ❤
Went into this movie blind with my wife... whoops
I took my bf. Did NOT expect so much ass and titties lol
The W...
I warned my wife what it was about and I knew it was gory, but I didn’t know to what extent. Glad I convinced her to sit this one out.
That scene with her trying to get ready is heartbreaking
I’ve been there, a truly raw and real scene
That scene made me so anxious while watching it.
@@hansgraichen8051 same I’ve seen it twice and that scene still hit hard the second time
That scene hit so hard for me.
@@skyofthelivingdead
I felt sorry for the guy she was going out with. He seems decent and truly cared about Elizabeth.
I kept checking your channel thrice a day just to see if you already uploaded a review of The Substance lol
You weren’t the only one lol
Me too lol. Like noooo substance yet ;( then boom yayyyyyy it's finally here!!! The review channel the people trust!!!
@@CodyLeachYT I was one of them lol, I saw it a couple of days ago....and I thought, Cody is going to love this haha
Surprised you didn't mention the insane amount of nudity in this film, guess that goes with the body horror
Demi Moore was absolutely brilliant in this
I think what makes a film like this so powerful with its messaging is that it doesn't shy away from portraying its female lead as flawed. Yes, some male characters are stereotypical, but the movie does a good job of getting you invested with this women's struggle. It is something any audience member can relate to, especially those who have gone through an addiction or body dysmorphia.
Most male characters are stereotypes now
It's all about the female
Well said.
I have been waiting for this review since I watched The Substance one week ago!
Same!!!! I've been waiting for him to talk about it too!
Same here!! I kept thinking “I hope he does The Substance!!”
Me too!! I trust Cody's well balanced objective reviews. He has me curious to see substance and heretic. We've been waiting and prayer answered 🙏
Same. Now I need Sean and Flickinger's reviews!
This is music to my ears. 🎶 It’s my number 1 so far. I have been hoping you’d cover this one and apparently everyone else has too. Haha
Also, you and your family stay safe with the hurricane. I’m in ATL and we’re getting sooo much rain already.
Really funny to get an ad for daily moisturizing cream at the end of this review.
Hahhha
This movie is fantastic. It’s like a Tales From The Crypt episode splashed with The Fly, Carrie, Requiem For A Dream, and Death Becomes Her elements. The role of Harvey was previously supposed to be played by Ray Liotta who would’ve crushed it but due to his ultimely death went to Dennis Quaid who did a very good job.
The fact that his name was Harvey was pretty... on the nose lol.
Kinda reminds me of Vince McMahon😅
5:30 She was in Mr. Brooks! that awesome thriller/horror with Kevin Costner and William Hurt!?!
Seriously underrated film. Costner is surprisingly great as a serial killer.
I've seen this film 3 times now. Three. It's a masterpiece of the genre and it blew my mind three times in a row.
I plan to see it 2 more times this weekend before it leaves theaters.
I've always liked Dennis Quaid, but if he (Harvey) wasn't the grossest thing in the movie then he has to be in the top 3! 🤢He is such a great sleaze! 😆Demi Moore was awesome! 😍😢 Overall, it was a great movie theatre experience! I can't wait for it to be available on streaming!
I know what a creep yuckkk
Hollywood is a Liberal Cult now. The reason why some of our favorite actors and actresses are being blacklisted is simply because they have an opinion of their own. That's not allowed.
He was such a pig 🤢
I guess Cody’s been finding some good movies haven’t seen a spoiler filled rant in a while
It is a body horror film about body dysmorphia that is thematically rich but never loses its sense of fun. That has been my one sentence review since I saw it anybody asks that's exactly what I tell him. It's fantastic and It's a story that only could have been told by a woman this movie should be seen as Coralie Fargeat's get out and she should be getting as much attention as Jordan Peele did for that film. It does such a wonderful job of being a legitimately good horror film while putting us the audience through a snippet of what women go through everyday it's an incredible film. After seeing revenge and now this I can tell you I I'm incredibly excited for what she decides to make next cuz with both of those films her unique voice can be seen but also her femininity brings something more to these cliched stories that makes them so much richer than they would have been without her
Demi Moore is getting some Oscar buzz, and that would be fucking awesome to see her and this movie nominated. We need horror at the Oscar’s, and if this movie can’t do it, I don’t know what will
Body horror baby. God I love it.
This movie is so fucking disgusting, and in the best way possible. 3rd act went all Dead Alive. Crazy shit.
Wow, it went braindead style? (NZ name for the film) now I'm even more interested.
@NickElliott-dv8vn the way the gore was stylized and the prosthetics, yes. I felt it kinda shared that with Braindead. And kinda similar in the way the blood let's loose. Obviously minus the lawnmower.
I was thinking of Society, myself.
@@skyofthelivingdead I see some of that as well
Nice pull, Dead Alive!!! Batshit insanity
This movie sounds like the true story of some Hollywood Celebs...IYKYK
A substance beginning with A?
You literally just said everything I said about this movie when I came out of the cinema. Subscribed!
Seeing Cody with Sean's background feels intruding
My new favourite director - between this and Revenge, I love her
But is it her last🤔
I've never had a movie theater experience quite like this movie, literally a one of a kind movie theater experience I will never forget.
Awesome review bro. You killed it.
This movie was better than I expected
This was a 5 out of 5 for me. I was absolutely blown away!
Seen this and afterwards, I had to get a drink cause OMFG, one of the most insane horror movies that's also a damn fun one.
Elisabeth Sparkle: There's been a slight misuse of the Substance.
Thats what I love about this LMAO. We all think we know where that final 20 minutes starts and then the film just keeps going. We are all told about the insane final 20 minutes, but we are never actually prepared for it haha.
Loved the movie. I avoided reviews and kept myself as blind as possible going in, all I knew was that it was a body horror with Demi Moore. I had no idea it would go full The Fly, and continue going to even more ridiculous levels, all while being hilarious. I also loved how many Kubrick references there were in the cinemtography. Man, I've been waiting for a film like this for years. Great review Cody. I haven't seen you this hyped about a movie in a while.
In school now, so haven’t checked out this video yet, but I have been waiting to hear your thoughts on this crazy movie!
Anyways, here is a tier list idea: Body Horror Movies
I've seen the film twice in theaters; first time was by myself and I had an absolute blast watching it, I went back again with an audience and got to experience their reactions to it. This is easily the most excited that I've been about a brand new horror movie in a long time, and I hope that Mubi releases a 4K Bluray, because I will buy it!🖤🔥🔥
Seeing this movie tonight can’t wait!!!!!
I promise you won’t regret it it’s a unforgettable masterpiece and my new favorite movie!!!!
The movie is so fucking bonkers 😂😂😂😂😂😂
@Cody Tho not a film for me (gore), you remain one of my favorite channels for always calling it as YOU see it, and being critical but fair in all your reviews. Have a lovely weekend with your family and friends
With no real negatives, could this ever reach a 5/5 for you? It’s a 5/5 for me
The end was farcical.
This is definitely a film to see in a full screening, seeing other people cringe and wince became just as enjoyable as the movie itself
I love this movie. Demi Moore is awesome. Margret Quayle is great. Randy Quad playing a Harvey Weinstein lite character is great. I love everything about this movie even the third act.
I have to mention the sound design because I think it was some of the best sound mixing and editing I've ever seen and heard in a film! The sounds of gore, body horror! The food scenes made me want to throw up! The music that plays for Sue felt so pornographic and high intensity, the music references to body horror films in the past! The camera angles and shots were so perfect too, again the difference between the shots of Elizabeth, being more natural, then sue having the over the top male gaze angles.
This film was such an assault on my senses in the best way too.
The trailers were edited good too
@@tonyrodrigues9425 yeah the trailer was great! It didn't give too much away and showed what they needed to show. I would love to find some of the music from the score
14:25 If hanging out with friends and 1 or 2 haven't seen this:? It joins Mr. Brooks/Frailty/Fight Club/A History of Violence/Requiem for a Dream. movies you don't watch too often but suggest if 1 or more haven't with these movies!
Such a beautifully shot flick. The gore was great also. It jumped the shark a bit in the end, but it was awesome. The plot could be an allegory for so many topics in which the inconsistencies doesn't matter for that is not the point. One of the best horror flicks in years.
I read somewhere that Dennis Quaid’s character was originally going to be played by Ray Liotta, but he passed before filming began. So it’s cool to hear how awesome Quaid is in the movie. I wanna see it, but I’m scared. Body horror is something I watch, but while also looking away lol.
Girl it’s gross as hell
So hyped for this and Heretic! Demi Moore is a total queen for taking on this project!
The review we’ve all been waiting for!
Clicked almost as quick as when I seen Terrifier 3 review!
I guess I'm seeing this tomorrow.
I think Catherine zeta jones kinda replaced demi come to think of it…i thought both demi and the actress that played sue were so fun to watch. Demi did so much with so little dialogue in the first act
This movie sounds like it has similarities to The Neon Demon
Is that movie any good?
"The Neon Demon" sucked, though. "The Substance" is definitely the better movie of the 2 films.
This movie has substan--wait...
Still waiting for a review of Darkness Falls when you get a chance. I know it's an oldie but I wished it got some more hype.
That’s the one about the tooth fairy? If so that scared the hell out of me when I was little
@@Swampdonkey796 yep! I wished they would've done another. The cast wasn't all that bad and I actually enjoyed it for what it was. Wasn't looking for Oscar worthy stuff
I would actually like to point out that "Darkness Falls" is somewhat similar to "Lights Out" in that the evil Tooth Fairy 🦷monster is terrified of the light and the light can hurt it. And in "Lights Out," Diana is also terrified of the light and the light can hurt Diana, as well. 💡🔦
One of my biggest surprises of the year. Absolutely loved this
I’d be curious to hear your thoughts on Julia Decournau’s work (Raw, Titane)
Lots of common ground here; two French female directors who consistently tell female-led stories, both making very interesting and strong debuts, then absolutely hitting it out of the park with their second efforts. Haven’t seen Revenge so will try and rectify that soon. Except for being English rather than French, Rose Glass can join this club too. Haven’t seen her debut St Maud yet, but sophomore film Love Lies Bleeding was one of my favourite films of this year so far.
Knew nothing really about it. Didn’t watch the trailer. I just remember seeing the poster of Demi’s back sewn up and was like “I’M IN”. Saw this in the best possible way. In a sold out 7 PM screening on discount day. Everyone was having all types of reactions. A woman next to me was gagging in certain scenes. The final 10-15 minutes had me laughing my ass off and applauding at what I was seeing because I just couldn’t believe how far they took this. It’s a lil bit too long but at the same time I can’t think of anything to possibly take out to shorten the runtime. Demi Moore’s best, Margaret Qualley is great, Dennis Quaid is really good (Ray Liotta originally was cast before he passed and there’s scenes where I thought Dennis sounded exactly like him). After it was over I ignited a slow clap 😂. I really liked “Revenge” but this one absolutely puts Coralie Fargeat on the map. I really hope she specifically gets attention for best original screenplay. 5/5
I can't stop thinking about the film since I watched it. Everyone if you're still on the fence about go watch it. I was blown away!
This movie was outstanding in my opinion. That ending with her on stage pleading to the audience was really sad but the grossest scene was dennis quad eating the seafood. BTW, I'm shocked this guy doesn't have over a million subs. N
Definitely one of my favorite movies of the year. The score, music, the shots, the acting was all top notch
Cronenberg was shocked by this movie. 😱
Did he actually see it i wonder
In a alternate universe, yes! 😒
I am sad, because it sounds so good and the praise of it is so glowing, but I have such a weak stomach! If I watched it, I might well feel physically sick. The horror anthology Cabinet of Curiosities had an episode about beauty cream and it literally made me throw up. So I don't know if I'm brave enough to try this one!
man i feel the same way about terrifier
@@MIKEXCER Amen to that! I really like Art the Clown as a character, the acting of him seems so much fun, but the levels of gore in those movies would be too much for me!
The _TERRIFIER_ movies are totally freaking insane! But they're also totally freaking awesome! And now we're finally getting "Terrifier 3"! 🤡
It has to be said, Dennis Quaids character IS over the top but by no means is his character unrealistic. I have worked for men EXACTLY like that character.
Tbh Cody this movie took me by surprise my jaw dropped to the floor I mean wow I think this is the craziest movie I’ve seen in my entire life
2024 is honestly one of the best years for horror we've had in a long time imo
Any chance you could do a spoiler review Cody? Would love to hear you talk about the absolutely batshit and awesome finale.
I feel like this concept, particularly concerning the entertainment industry, and the political elite, is only mildly based on fiction
I literally saw this movie and immediately started looking for your review on it. I knew you'd dig this one for sure.
This movie was absolutely nuts, but I don't know if I'll watch it again, maybe with someone who hasn't seen it, to see their reaction.
Can't wait to see this - but I'd want a home/streaming release, so I can pause, rewind, take a break... (!).
This is literally your best review ever. Your passion absolutely authentic and passionate. You always are but this was extra.
Got to be honest bro I’ve been having a great sleep at night and it’s been listening to you penguinz0 and me ballen, but your channel keeps me out of having sleep paralysis every night it’s such a joy to listen to! Thank you I know you’ll have more praise overtime, your analysis over movies is amazing! Thank you
Mr ballin*
I appreciate that
I would LOVE an in depth spoiler-y analysis of this movie from you if you’re up for it!
This movie went places I NEVER would have expected. I couldn't believe what I was seeing onscreen lol. Especially the Carrie-type sequence. Watching this in theaters was fun because the whole last 45 minutes the audience was gasping and laughing!
One of the best films of the year, no doubt. What I didn’t expect was how the OTT batsh*t crazy final act was a jarring reminder for me that Starry Eyes is truly my favorite body horror movie.
Just scrollin around and saw this video. Im gona have to check this movie out now. Dropped a sub as well. Also, Terrifier 3 soon!!!!! 🎅
Dang this is such effective Body Horror , it's outdoing Krohnenburg's kid
I emphatically SECOND every bit of praise you gave to this movie!
never seen that thumbnail before
This movie is insane, in the best possible way 🔥
I have pre-ordered the awesome score on vinyl record too 💪
Finally! Yaaaasssss!!! 😂
Side note, Cody, I just watched AZRAEL. This movie is 100% up your alley. 😎🍿
Got a review coming tomorrow. I dug it.
Can't wait to see that.
This movie rocked
This movie is fantastic!!!
Will you do a review on revenge?
Something i learned Ray liotta was supposed to be in the movie as the slimeball boss character after he died Dennis Quaid was recast in the role
“It’s probably not a film I’m going to rewatch often.” Meanwhile I’ve seen it 3x already.💀
Definitely one of those films where if it happens to be on TV and I happen to switch it on half-way through, I’m staying for the remainder.
What a great year for horror, by far the best time in many years.
3:45. Gave me those tales from the crypt vibes! The ones that won emmies- that have a lesson, or meaning within meaning! And just like those, needed a walk to process
The Thing is boring compared to this crazy batshit level of special effects!!! I was blown away
"The Thing" is definitely not boring. It's nowhere near boring. But I'm glad that you liked "The Substance," though. 🤘🙂👍
Cody's the only horror reviewer i trust
My only complaint/nitpick with this film was that the chapter title inserts felt unnecessary.
i absolutely loved this movie. my favorite of the year so far
I haven't been all that interested in watching this movie from what little I've seen/heard, but now I am. The way you describe it...this might actually be right up my alley. Added to the list now!
Finally I can subscribe 🤘
pump it up, you gotta pump it up!!
you missed a chance to drop a gi jane joke here
Great year for movies so far!
Bros intro is always a banger
No offense to anyone who likes this movie, but for a movie called The Substance, I felt like there wasn't a lot of substance. To me, it felt like a drag. The first 2 acts felt predictable, and once it got to the third act, it felt like a drastic turn. And yes, I was like wtf but that doesn't automatically mean it's good. All respect if you like it, though. I'm just unfortunately not in that camp.
All style no substance you could say?
i can’t lie, a lot of this movie had me drowning in anxiety because i did not know what would come next
