As a younger fan of GI Joe, my introduction to the series was in the early 2000s, primarily the Frostbite vs Neo-Viper pack and Frostbite with the Rockslide, and GI Joe Volume 4: Deadly Lies. It was the only context I had as to who GI Joe and Cobra were, and when Valor vs Venom came out, I was all over it. The series of GI Joe I enjoyed the most was GI Joe Renegades. It was a new take on familiar concepts, which made it very exciting. I was saddened at the end of Joecon, as I never got the chance to go, and the ending of the toyline until recently, but watching these reviews has allowed me to view the nostalgia someone else has for a different era of the same toyline that I enjoyed, a shared interest that can be understood by multiple generations, and that is why GI Joe is great. YO JOE!

I have been a collector and avid fan and member since it's inception in 1964...I simply love it and hate it at the same time. I collect the items that I like and sometimes the ones I hate. GI Joe came into my life in the early 60s and really took hold in the 70s for me. As I got older I went away from it only to come back to it when I had children of my own. It will always bring back fond memories of Christmas with my family, the excitement when the GI Joe mail ins came in for my 3 boys. I am still collecting and have over 375 3 1/4 in figures and over 200 12 in vintage figures. Vehicles too. I have just begun to showcase some of my collection on You Tube. After inventory (took months) and completing figures from the mountains of accessories I am really appreciating your videos and they have helped me with my collection tremendously. I am grateful for your very entertaining videos and look forward to learning even more! Yo Joe!

Wow, what a great video! In 1983, my parents got divorced. As a ten year old then, it was a hard time for because I didn’t understand why it was happening and I couldn’t fix it. However, I discovered G.I. Joe the year before when I got my first figure which was Snake-Eyes, and immersed myself into the line along with my friends. The comic book helped too! G.I. Joe was there to help me through that rough period of my life, and to this day I’m still thankful to Hasbro and Marvel for developing that world.

It's only thanks to Cobra Commander's filecard in 1986' that I learned what 'Ordinance' meant. Every adult I asked had no clue what I was talking about. We learned something from these toys, files, backstories and comics, & that's a positive thing.

GI Joe for me was about creating friendship through imagination and play in the backyard! Couldnt get enough of Joe and Cpbra soldiers and thr vehicles to creat the awesome backyard battle. Plus my family has a lot military background and I related the two. Awesome review HCC788, when i watch your reviews, its like a time machine and takes me back to the 80's. I thank you and YO JOE!!

Great video! You know, I have been struggling to explain to my wife why I like G.I. Joe so much and I think you just made my life easier! :) G.I. Joe was my favorite toys growing up, sadly in Venezuela we did not get the comics, so I'm just starting to discover the great work of Larry Hama. Thanks to you, Kevin and all the other great G.I. Joe reviewers I have been able to relive the fascination I had for it in the 80s. Keep the great work!

Love the video essay. I had the Sea Adventurer Adventure Team 12" Joe when I was a kid. Later on I gravitated to the RAH line, mainly thanks to the superb writing in the comic book by Larry Hama. I had just about all the figures and toys from the first two years of the line, and had a smattering of them from '84-'87. This channel brings back a lot of pleasant memories of those times, and I just wanna say thanks HCC788, keep up the great work and Yo Joe!

My era was 80's G.I. Joe as well, and I completely agree with your assessment. For me personally, it's impossible to overstate how important Larry Hama was to the appeal of G.I. Joe. I loved the fact that he was able to blend comic book fantasy with real world military jargon, history lessons, character development, and a complex geopolitical world view that managed to avoid obvious propaganda. To be honest, I didn't even think about these things at the time, but looking back I appreciate his willingness to treat his (mostly) teenage readers as adults who didn't need to be talked down to.
Also, the toys (at least in the early years) were absolutely brilliant.

I’ve been watching some of your review videos of individual Joes lately but this has me sold. GI Joe is great! Of all the toy lines we had back in the 80’s, none of them inspired me to go on an adventure with them like GI Joe. Whether outside in the dirt or inside on the floor “GI Joe was there”. Smashed the subscribe button and hit the bell.

  • @johannesmakila2459

We never got 80's cartoon so to me what I know about world and characters comes from comic books. It's why I like Destro so much as he really got to shine in comic book, I like comic book Cobra Commander as ruthless leader who didn't show mercy to anyone including his own son and I always pair Snake Eyes and Scarlet because they were couple in comic book and clearly cared about each other. Those are some of things that I still like about G.I Joe comic book. As some one who is also Transformers fan I didn't hate crossovers between two. This includes final one of Marvel run when Cobra repaired Megatron and gave him his G2 look.
Back as kid I didn't have many G.I Joe toys as I had toys from several other franchises as well like Transformers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles but ones that I had included my favorite version of my favorite character that being Iron Grenadiers Destro so I was happy about ones that I had. Then again toys in here tend to cost more than in USA and that was also case back then.

That was a really entertaining video. As an 80's kid, there are a lot of reasons G.I. Joe is great. Too bad the franchise is pretty much dormant right now. But at least we still have the G.I. Joe: ARAH comic from IDW written by Larry Hama. It's like a link to my childhood. Yo Joe!

I sadly missed the great GI Joe era of the 1980's however a friend here in the Orangeville, Ontario area, was a sculptor and designer of GI Joes for Hasbro in the 1990's and a good friend, now sadly deceased, had a huge collection of GI Joes which fueled my love. The excellent art and scripting of the GI Joe comics didn't hurt either! Keep up the great work.

I agree about Larry Hama. The guy is the vital part of the success of G.I.Joe. as we know it.
Even though we had past the Ninja fever, he made Arashikage and that silent issue comic cool!
You are also correct that G.I.Joe is international.
I am from Indonesia, and my first encounter with G.I.Joe was the toys in 1987 (or 1988 if I am mistaken).
Even though we had American version of M.A.S.K., SilverHawks, and He-Man toys here, somehow we mostly have Japanese (Takara) version of G.I.Joe.
My first toys were Skyhawk (named "Little Harry" for some reason) and Scarlett. Those two are still my favourite G.I.Joe toys now.

I loved my old Joe figures. I played with them in the early nineties, and my brother used to buy me figures all the time when he worked at Wal-Mart. I used to watch the cartoons in the morning with him and when my brother gave me a bunch of the old comics, it just made the toys even cooler. I loved those toys and those comics. It's a nice connection that I will always have to my older brother. That is why GI Joe is so great.

I bought the mobat and Stalker in 82, and that was the new start of my Joes s passion.
I had big Jims and 12' Joes at early age, but it was not as compelling.
like others here, I moved a lot, and it was difficult to keep friends.
in the 80 s, I was getting old to have friends to play with the figs, so I had few to do so.
around 15, in 84, it was more of a intimate thing, and it turned more toward a dio passion
where I d build cardboard bases out of big appliances s boxes like fridges.
I always had many story scenarios in mind for cartoons or movies based on the Joe universe
and kept collecting, very few of my friends knew I was still buying Joes.
in the late years, around 88, my main buzz was to have my armies standing in rows.
Cobras looked better, since I army built quite a lot.
I can remember fulfilling a childhood phantasy by filling an entire shopping cart of Joe boxes...
just before buying a sports car and could nt afford that afterwards.
I had to pass on some great vehicles like the thunderclap, and rolling thunder because of that.
I still bought some figs up to 94, but only very few.
my last figs must be the Cobra flame throwers, desert vipers and ninjas.
Cesspool, and the assortment of toxo vipers with the toxic hiss tank.
I would have loved the internet to talk about Joes then.
I finally sold all my collection in 2012 because I needed money....
I only have my comics collection remaining. I d have no place in my apartment to have my Joes anyways.
as I completely filled it with Lego to make movies, as I built an animation studio as a business.
since it did nt quite work, I sell all of it as well.
knowing that earlier, I d have made a Joe channel too, I had a respectable collection,
I would have specialized in dios with cardboard scenes of which I was pretty good at building.
so this is why I appreciate your channel so much, I really share your passion.
    good show Commander!

Great video essay. I grew up playing with the 12" version. I was into GI Joe toward the end of the military era and the beginning of the Adventure Team. I only wish I had saved them for when my son came along in 1995. Luckily Hasbro had started doing the Timeless collection of the 12" line and I was able to buy some and wait till he got older, that and the huge box of 80's Joes and vehicles purchased at a yardsale gave him the chance to play with both sizes. I think he spent as many hours as I did playing with them.

I was very disappointed you were NOT wearing a cobra commander hood. Other than that great video. I remember vividly being torn between My Star Wars toy collection and the new G.I. Joe toys. G.I. Joe eventually won my heart due to the superior articulation. Before I watched the toon or read the marvel comic. The 1st swivel arms and neck Joe I got was flint and some crimson guards. The extra articulation BLEW MY MIND. I thought, this was as realistic as any toy can get! Subscribed and going to watch some more of your vids later.

Thanks for making these videos. I was a fan of GIJoe, but not a huge fan. I was more into Transformers (still am). I got the comics up through the Devil's Due series (which isn't cannon and I think that sucks) and my old toys are still somewhere in my parents' house. But I enjoy the videos. I watch other toy reviewers and I like how you have your own voice instead of trying to immitate others.
One question I have for you is, how well do you think GIJoe would work today as a toy and a concept? You said GIJoe will come back into the public eye. I hope so too, but how? Hasbro made IDW Comics do a "shared universe" working GIJoe, Visionaries, Mask, and others into their Transformers comic which didn't work well. I don't think the concept itself was plausible. But at least we got Skywarp as a Joe and telling Red Ninjas to surrender or he'll step on them.
