  • Love & Gratitude to all our Rasikas & Well wishers…🙏🏽
Sridevi Nrithyalaya's Tapasya series enters 6th year since its initiation in June 2017.
Smt. Sheela Unnikrishnan, Smt. Shobha Korambil and SDN's Kool Kidz along with Sri Kishore Mosalikanti engage in a casual yet valuable chit-chat session, reminiscing Smt. Sheela Unnikrishnan's Kuchipudi Rangapravesam and the process that went behind it.
As we complete 5 years of the Tapasya series, we deem it befitting to discuss the memorable event that was a fruit of Smt. Sheela's unswerving Tapas.
    1:01:00 Kameshweri Ganesan:
On many occasions, the topic of Sheela ma'am's Rangapravesam has been discussed on a lighter note. But, when did the serious talks begin and how did it all come to materialise?
    2:23:00 Bhairavi Venkatesan:
you had learnt manduka shabdam and radhika krishna previously when you were in kuchipudi art academy as a growing teacher and choreographer. Now you have relearned these pieces for your rangapravesam as an accomplished teacher and choreographer. did you feel any difference between those two learning processes?
    3:57:00 Harinie Jeevitha:
How did it feel to be on the other side of the classroom after a long time? What was your main focus/motto during your classes with Anna?
    5:42:00 Mrinalini Sivakumar:
Anna! Do you treat a rangapravesham differently from any other regular performance? If so, what extra steps would you expect your students to take in their preparation for one?
    8:12:00 Mridula Sivakumar:
Anna! I am very curious to know , how you decided the repertoire for Ma'am's Arangetram?
    10:51:00 Sanjena Ramesh:
Ma'am, Which was the most challenging piece to learn and
    to execute, and why?
    13:08:00 Kameshweri Ganesan:
Ma'm! Which item did you enjoy learning the most -
be it in terms of choreography or the learning process itself?
Anna! Which item do you think ma'am recieved
    very well as a student?
    18:41:00 Harinie Jeevitha:
Anna! During the rehearsals that I got to watch, I noticed that you constantly stressed on executing a movement as a 'movement', rather than as an 'Adavu'; you insisted that one should 'enlive' rather than
merely 'express'; you also used to prioritise 'comfort' in movement rather than 'correctness' Could you tell us about this and the impact
that it has on the Dance?
    38:24:00 Rajadarshini Saravanan:
We have discussed about the dance aspects so far. What were the challenges that you faced other than the dance and how did you overcome it?
    39:13:00 Mrinalini Sivakumar:
Right from day one of this process, Shobha ma'am has been there with you, even during the practice sessions. How all has she been a support to you?
    46:51:00 Sanjena Ramesh:
Ma'am! You had to change costumes in between the repertoire. What did you feel then?
    53:19:00 Mridula Sivakumar:
You had been practising with recorded music all through your preparations. How did it feel to dance to a live orchestra? Were you able to enjoy it and how do you think itimpacted your dance?
    57:06:00 Sanjena Ramesh:
What was the major difference between dancing in the practice sessions versus dancing on stage, according to you?
    57:33:00 Shobha Korambil:
Even yesterday while performing, I felt some discomfort with my costume. Did you feel any such disturbances?
    58:46:00 Shobha Korambil:
Dancing in front of a teacher can never be matched with practising by ourselves. Would you like to say something about that?
    1:01:33 Kameshweri Ganesan:
Since the day of Rangapravesam, we have all been waiting for the answer to what your parents (Appuna & Suguna Paatti) would have felt, had they seen the Rangapravesam?
    1:04:14 Bhairavi Venkatesan:
Kishore mama! you have always been jovial and teasing towards Sheela perima but was there anything you appreciated or looked up to in herwhen she was practicing for her Rangapravesam?

Great episode.. will relish watching it repeatedly..🙏 for it has very deep questions and answers applicable to many facets of life..... And yes, not to forget... Ms.Shobha's compèring was very heart-felt, meticulous, and deserves special mention.. it also speaks volumes for the sisters' single-minded devotion to the arts and the sororal affection between them.
Talking of abhinaya and facial expressions, as a humble spectator, I feel that SDN is the most unique in that respect: it is amazingly bhakthi-laden...SDN dancers use ending points, and every tiny pause/ interval for a small, expressive sway of the head which is missing in other schools, and makes all the difference, for me👌.... this is particularly noticeable in Harinie's performances and is now being seen repeated by many younger SDN students almost as a trademark SDN movement. A classical artist can perform with different central messages/ bhaavams/ attitudes imbued in their performance. The message is almost perfectly one of humility of the devout, and of dwaitha bhakthi in SDN's dancers🙏🙏👌
And btw, the title was intentional?? : "Tapasya episode 60 - Rangapravesam: A Reminiscence - Sridevi Nrithyalaya - Bharatanatyam 🤔??? Dance???"" Kuchipudi dance, no??🙏

Title is not done intentionally. Sridevi Nrithyalaya - Bharathanatyam Dance is just a default template after the main title. After reading your comment, I deleted ‘Bharathanatyam’ since the core content of the discussion is applicable to any dance form. Thank you 🙏🏽

I am filled with emotions after watching the full video.
I checked 4-5 times that it is more than one hour video.
Initially I was wondering that it is a long conversation but I concluded happily hearing words of wisdom.
I laughed at moments when behind the scene candid moments were explained.
I cried at the moments when the pain behind practice was discussed.
I respected at the moments when true emotions were portrayed.
I learnt at the moments when guru shishya morale was imparted.
I rejoiced at the moments when persistence examples were illustrated.
Finally I felt humbled when the message was delivered.
“Seek and receive the way Teacher delivers” “True seeking has granted boon to demons too”
But what makes us humane is ‘After seeking, we should forget நான் and travel the rest of life to spread the boon we received for making நாம் as our mantra’
Stay Blessed and keep sheltering unknown friends like us under your wings of selfless teaching and preaching!!!
With all warmth in my heart, I pay my respect to Team!!
P.S. : I am watching Rangapravesham again (though I watched fully once already) now after knowing interesting moments behind the magic.

It is specifically southern Vaidikam, not any generic southern culture. There is no generic southern culture, like there is no such things as generic "Indian culture" either: 99% of the times people speak of "Indian culture" they are actually referring, knowingly or unknowingly, to Vaidika maarga specifically (or what is nowadays popularly called Hinduism), and 1% of they time they are referring to extremely different things like the recently-invented bollywood. I too greatly appreciate SDN for preserving our Vaidika maargam in the south, like Vijayanagara.

    Wow 😳
I admire your courage in doing Ranga pravesam at your age and
allowing a free discussion about the most important and interesting event in your life.
You are a source of inspiration to everyone.
    I remember the saying..
    "Winners never quit.
    Quitters never win."
"GurulEka etvanti" success won't be possible. 🙏🌼🙏
There is a woman behind every successful Man and Woman!
Thanks to Shobha Mam for inspiring you.
    🙏🌹🍀🌹🙏
Rules and regulations are only till we imbibe them. Once they become a part of oneself, one can forget them and learn to live the role being enacted.
The bhAvam of the artist creates the Rasa in the viewers.
Thank you for this episode with free and fun filled discussions.🙏🌹🙏

A really waited episode this is!
Welcome to the 60th episode of tapasya!
Really a proud moment for us fans and your students as well mam. At the age of 52 she performed with such grace and beauty !
Even taling about the rangapravesham brings happiness upon me.
After watching the video now i know the tricks kishore sir played on mam. Of course kishore sir did it to make a star ! Can you believe that sheela mam danced thillan for about 2 hours!? And she would practice from the beginning even if she forgot a step! Hats of mam! Really superb
Thanks to vempati Master and all the students who helped for the rangapravesham cause because of not only her practice but others help the rangapravesham was a super hit and talk of the town! And I would like to add the part where sheela mam fell down ! The room was filled with laughter. I loved that chit chat it was amazing
And also the costume changes ! The words of wisdom passed by the teachers really boosts my confidence to become a great dancer.
This video says how you can be not only a teacher but a student at the same time, and to excel in both the roles. "She has not been a perfect kuchpudi dancer but a perfect student"
-kishore anna. She was a sincere , honest , dedicated student. Thank you sdn

Greetings from Auztra Natural Farms, Pongalur.
The presentation by Selvi. Harinie Jeevidhaa is, I am sure, if the bulky mike is not in her hand, in fact a "Bharadhap Abhinayam" delivering the introductory messages!
Greatly very nice to "See" her "Speak!" to the troupe students!
And , hearty Congratulations to You, Sree. Sheelaa Unni Krishnan!
For imparting the essence of Thapasya that is Essence of Bharadham.
    "Guru Kulam!"
Seeing You three sitting, sitting on the floor, "Sitting on folded legs!", on floor mats!
And seeing all of the "Sishayi Kodigal" in the same posture on the floor, it is very really heartening!
All are very Fit to Sit on the Mother Earth's Lap!
Oh! Almost 99.9 percent of the present day folks Will escape this Posture due to their "un-foldable knees!"
Due to "un-folded knees" for ages!
I stress the need to include compulsory "Bharadham", that too with daily routines on "Thillaanaa", in the Sports Time in schools and colleges.
That must contain these rigorous "Thapasya" every day.
    The Immortal Gift from Bharadham!
    Physical Fitness!
Many of my foreign friends, after going thru these "Thapasya" vidieos, are slowly absorbing the True Qualities of our "Guru Kulam" tradition of education!
Most of them have only half knees and half hip joints and stiff ankles.
And of course have no waist or neck of hip. (I prescribe often, to them, to do an hour of "Arai Mandi" and and hour of "Nataraaja Paadham!").
And its immense quantities of health aspects.
They feel proud of me for introducing them to "Thapasya".
That pride goes straight to You and Your Students.
    Thanks.

The best things which are covered...
    1. The discipline of a student although being an established and successful teacher herself is spectacular.
    2. There's no age for learning..you may start at any point to fulfill your cherished dream.
    3. The humility and commitment of ma'am
    Truly inspiring

In this Kishore sir said that when we are about to convey something through dance we must focus on bhava not on perfection of adavu i feel this also right sir and once i saw a video of Sheela mam saying that dancers are trained perfectly and given a muscle subconscious memory of that perfection through training and when bhava is expressed, automatically that training of adavus will make dancers to do their adavus perfectly simultaneously along with their bhava in songs...so you both are right we need to get trained for long time to get perfect adavus then when song is proceeded we should not focus on adavu(since it should be present subconciously) and focus only on bhavas.

Loved everything about this humble informative episode. Even the 'documentary' Tapasya episode about how Smt Sheela's Rangapravesham was achieved was meaningful to watch.
It is also very clear how much affection is there between the sisters. They're typical devoted sisters, always there for each other, always helping the other to achieve everything.
The students asked very good questions, the teachers answered well. I really appreciated all the insights. And as always, I loved seeing everyone's pleasant face and hearing them speak (especially when speaking in Tamizh).
Smt Sheela admitted she wasn't used to more than a couple of minutes in front of the mirror. She doesn't need more either, as she and her sister always look lovely. As does everyone present. May Sri Devi shower her divine blessings on you all and on her divine institution, SriDevi Nrithyalaya.
P.S. Before Smt Sheela's Rangaprevesham, I never thought of how different it is to approach this as a student, versus as a seasoned Teacher. Be it as a student or as a Guru, Smt Sheela is ever showing the ideal way to be. Sri Kishore's answers and views were very enlightening again.
