I really see myself in Rachel. I have fought addiction for almost 12 years now. I've been clean almost 2 years now, but it isn't a good day everyday. She is so kind hearted, you can see it in her. I think like she said, she needs to just stay away from the idiots. God bless her ❤

Why should we pay you to do the bare minimum you need to do in order to keep your benefits. Don't joke boys that style of boxing is called "milling" we did it in the Royal Marines Basic Training to test the recruits heart for a scrap , it's not as dangerous as straight up bxing but it shows aggression and draws a bit of blood now and then , it's more about not giving up and showing guts than knocking out other recruits which is not allowed anymore in our training regime , Welsh boys have always made great soldiers ..respect to you from a retired RMC .

I live in this town but am one of the lucky ones. I've seen this over the last 30 years, i've spent to much time in my 20's in Legion clubs, pubs and clubs and the people were some of the best. I understand why the valley is what it is and this breaks by heart.

So many of these people are suffering some kind of trauma. The problem with a lot of them is that the trauma is so ingrained that they no longer recognise that it is a trauma because it is just a part of their life 😞.

In Canada you can work while collecting disability benefits as long as it doesn't exceed $200 a month. Anything over the $200 is deducted dollar for dollar. This encourages people to work and contribute what they can ... even if it is only a few hours a month it makes them feel useful. Cutting benefits for 16 hours a week is only making people not want to work and just stay on benefits.
I came from Swansea and like you left in 1980 , so glad i did went back for a visit in 2015 and found it to be depressing moving to australia was the best move we ever made

Reploy, and possibly others I've forgotten. They're all long gone, and nothing much has replaced them. that's what happened to Merthyr. There was a brief glimpse of the bottom of 1st Avenue, Galon Uchaf, including the house I grew up in, 1942 to 1951. Brought back a few memories of a different Merthyr before employment opportunities vanished.

They only realise the importance when it's too late, but even then you could always do night classes, online courses or part-time studies.

Alcohol and Valium is such a lethal mix. I’ve seen people absolutely paralytic and total blackout / memory loss for entire multi days periods over a few Valium and only a small amount of alcohol. I’ve seen people have total mental breakdowns / psychotic episodes just because they ran out of Valium and withdrew.

@Floyd1504 I have been on Valium for 25 years after suffering a head and neck injury after being electrocuted at work. I take it for seizures and horrible muscle spasms. I tried several times to stop ... but within a few weeks the seizures and spasms return with a vengeance. It was unpleasant trying to stop, but nothing like what was mentioned in this thread. Just really irritated and anxious.
