Stuff like this is exactly why I can’t throw anything away! There’s so many better uses for things you have lying around. What an awesome project - I really enjoyed watching this!
Lady, there are many men that would love to be your guy as most men can't even bang a nail in a piece of wood, but from what I can see you don't need a man around the house if you're that competent. You're brilliant so be proud of yourself. Total admiration to your abilities.
There are only two reasons to have a man around the house, and one of them is to lift heavy objects. Neither of the two reasons involve DIY stuff. Plenty of women who do a very good job of that. 🙂
Interesting setting you made, there. I need to find the best design for my own kitchen box. It should fit my car and be perfect for all my needs… your ideas are inspiring, thanks.
I just subscribed to your channel after watching these two videos on your chuck wagon box. Caravan Carolyn sent me over. Your skills are admirable. Very clever and creative design
Nice done on this Build. I think a small box like this would work nicely in my jeep as well. Buster and I camp our of it pretty regular, and this looks perfect. Thanks for sharing and keep up the fun builds my freind. dale
Thanks for sharing. Truly dig your design and have watched both vids 3 or 4 times. I like how small it is. I built one back in '82 for a 3 burner stove. Has lasted well but I'm older now and don't need something that big. So 🤔 I'll be copying you design. 😊
Nice build, very basic in woodworking skills, but so functional and aesthetically pleasing at the same time, so good on you for that one. I must say I love the music.
Love Homegrown Engineering and You are a Master at it!!!! Isn't it Grand when stuff you have but aren't fully using fits into a new project!?! Hunter/Gatherer WIN!!!
Pretty cool build. I like it. I built the kitchen on the REI website. You're lucky to have so much room in the 4runner. I have a VW Golf SportWagen with no chance of having a flip top lid. Love the way you made everything work. Good job.
Thanks! Yeah I imagine that's pretty tight. In that case, I think making the top compartment more like a mini pull-out, with drawer slides might work. 🤔
I love your ingenuity. I don't know that I would do it this way...but that's what I love. You made what you needed, how you wanted it with what you had...YOUR WAY. brilliant. Truly enjoyed watching you "think" and build. Happy Camping!!!
My ideal is take your board back out.Alpha, monitor your stove sit on your stove in your board.Mark around then put some kind of block or triumph or something in there so it don't slide back and forth them back and forth around and damage your stove
great ideas and design ,i did my simple one in a day with timber i had lying around and off cuts ,only bought some hinges and screws.Where us non carpenters mess up thou is with lining things up and using wrong fasteners even sizes of hinges etc.All my errors stand out and it makes the final finish look sloppy. It works but when i see the faults and the doors are off square its annoying. But hey 1st time attempt i should go easy on myself .Its a prototype right. Love yours by the way
Thanks so much! Love that you were able to make it with scrap. I hate seeing good lumber go to waste! So true about the errors, but I'm a big believer in iterative design -- and Bob Ross. "We don't make mistakes. We just have happy accidents." The fact that it works, and you built it yourself are the best achievements. 👏 👏 👏
I'm curious.... Why did you choose to put the long silver hinges on the outside and top, where they're completely visible? What you have done is beautiful and designed so well.... it's absolutely lovely! ⭐🎀🤗
If I recall correctly, I was going to undermount them, but then I wouldn’t have been able to open the lid flat. It might have worked on the pantry door though 🤔
Very nice but I have two questions. Do the small canisters stay on the magnetic strip while traveling, and is there anything holding the plastic tubs in?
They do! And initially, I had nothing holding the tubs in. They’re in pretty tight. But once I was loading in and tipped it pretty steeply, and the larger tub fell out. So later, I added some tiny bungees.
It's loaded with gear, but I haven't stocked the pantry yet. That shouldn't add much weight, I don't think. I would estimate it weighs about 40lbs. I can move it around by myself -- though it's a bit awkward -- and, with some effort, can hoist it into the 4Runner.
Great idea! I ended up doing that on my sleeping platform. Probably would’ve saved me about $20 on the kitchen. 💸 Though I do sometimes use the handles to string a tie down through.
BY THE WAY...does it have to always be in the back of the vehicle? What about an easy 2x4 set of legs with wing nuts (or the like) so they'll fold up. You could keep it just outside the car and pack it up easy at night? Then you would't have to worry about spilling or burning your car either. *just a thought cause this is great!
Oh no, it definitely does not! Cooking inside the vehicle is a worst case scenario. I'm totally a fair weather camper. Chances are, 99% of the time, the kitchen will be on the bench of a picnic table at an established campground. I just wanted inside use to be an option, in case of unexpected, really bad weather. Another scenario might be me being a big baby about getting out in the morning cold, and wanting to make a cup of coffee without getting out of bed. 😂 Also, since this was made, I bought a little folding table that is 12"-19" tall. The short height is perfect for setting the camp kitchen on. So it has legs now, as you suggested. They're just not attached. I'm heading out in about 2 weeks, and can't wait to give it a whirl!
@@ShoestringMartha moving from Georgia to California, I found out how long two cats can complain in the back seat. Moving from California to Oregon, I dropped the back seat, added a fan midway for ventilation, and put them in the trunk. I'm sure other motorists enjoyed their stylings!
Looks nice and who would not like that snack board, and swing out spice cabinet? What I find lacking is that a chuck box or camp kitchen is designed around the essentials you need for camping. The spaces are custom designed to fit what you carry. I don't like those Trofast storage containers. It is a generic space, and things will rattle and shake in there, clanging around. If you built it to fit everything neatly in its own secure spot, there would be no rattling and clanging as you drive. Second problem - the tile edging used as holders for the Trofast, are aluminum. They may bend with any weight. You should not put a butane stove on a rickety shelf made of a plastic tray. Its not stable. If it falls when lit, KABOOM! On the video side - slow down at the end. We'd like to see it completed. Don't rush the last views. On the audio side - Adding music to any demo video is taxing to the viewer. Way too loud and unpleasant. Try no music and natural sounds. It will be nice to see it when finished.
This came out so well. Its incredibly satisfying to use these projects in camp and think "I did that." Really nice job!
Thank you!
The bottle opener handle idea is genius
I love that you showed how you "got into the weeds." Exactly something I expect myself to do haha...and end up with more holes than I use.
That’s why they make wood fill! 😄
You are simply totally amazing...theres nothing you cant do!!!
Nicely done, i like how you also incorporated misc items that you actually had in use in other areas. Truly enjoyed the vid, thank you for sharing.😊 👍
Thank you so much for the kind words 😊
Carolyn was right...I need this kitchen box
Stuff like this is exactly why I can’t throw anything away! There’s so many better uses for things you have lying around. What an awesome project - I really enjoyed watching this!
Thank you! I have soooo many caches of materials that I might just *need* some day 😬
I love this idea. Your camp kitchen is pumped.
Love your videos!! Thanks for posting!!!!!!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for all the cool ideas while I plan mine!
I'm really impressed, so clever

Go for it! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Great build. Very clever. Should work great in my van and boat. Thank you for sharing.
Good improvisation. Improvisation makes the process much more fun and interesting.
Cool design Martha! I enjoyed watching your process. Thinking of building something similar so I’m curious to see how the field test goes!
Great videos. You go girl.

beautiful, nice prototping and end result, thanks for sharing

Its called a piano hinge and you cut it to the length you need. A hinge is mounted depending on how the flap is opened.

May i have the size baskets ? Some reason the link brings me to my previous orders.
Also the brackets are out of stock but i did find some on temu😂
Good catch! I fixed the link in the description, but here it is too: amzn.to/3D4uCJB
Looking great! How heavy is the chuck box when it’s loaded? Can’t wait to see the next video. 👏👏👏

Home depot outta stock - so often. Fortunately mine has a lowes right across the street, so i just fo there.
Score! I love Lowe's, but it's a bit of a drive for us. :(
Meant to add, i just cut a handhold out. Works gt.
Great idea! I ended up doing that on my sleeping platform. Probably would’ve saved me about $20 on the kitchen. 💸 Though I do sometimes use the handles to string a tie down through.
Where did you find the wire baskets for 6.99???
That was a couple years ago. They’re $8.64 now. 😕 amzn.to/3IYxsTg
Dear Martha I love your design an work. Are the dimensions available thanks?
Thank you so much! I went ahead and added the finished dimensions to the description, in case anyone else is curious.

nice! How much does it weigh?
Thanks! I haven't weighed it, but I would estimate about 40lbs, fully loaded.

He was in adventure cat training, but couldn't overcome the hurdle of tolerating car rides. :(

That's cool, but a lot of woodworking for sure. Not at all low woodworking. I have no tools like that.

It's worked out perfectly for me for the past year and half / dozen trips, but thanks for the thoughtful feedback. 👍
Gt build. Handles are costly, poke &/or catch on things and some rattle.
Liked this vid but music drove me nuts sorry … could continue watching.
Ditto here.
Same here super annoying music
👍👌👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Don't waste time driving around looking for something you want/need only to NOT find it.
Just Amazon it all!!
If there was an online vendor for small quantities of lumber at an affordable price, I'd never leave the house! 😂

Caravan Carolyn told us viewers about you. Love your camp box.
Great design, but I couldn't finish due to the incessant beat of your background music. It overpowered your excellent description whenever it came on.
Can’t watch the whole thing… the obnoxious pornography music!
