John Travolta really added heart to his portrayal of Edna. That role could have turned into a massive joke but I’m so happy he really portrayed a woman learning to let go of her insecurities
Yeah it's like weird where the casting of a man to play a big woman is a joke, but in the film itself Edna is portrayed as a strong woman with a truly loving husband and happy family
You believe he's a woman him and Christian really pulled off the relationship lol
@@AnvilPro100 "no one can dance better than you" "get em" his we comments are hilarious and adds to the believability of their relationship lol
I have to say that I watched Grease and Hairspray so often as a kid and didn’t even know it was John Travolta until my mum told me XD
Agree this is one of the best roles hes played
I TOTALLY approve of them changing the winner to Inez in this film. Also, was anyone else MASSIVELY surprised that Amanda Bynes could SLAY IT when singing?
Nah I wasn't surprised because of the Amanda Show
No, but I was surprised she could dance in that dress. It was so restrictive.
More than anything, the change gives a subtle shift in giving the populace of Baltimore a real choice in who to choose. Little Inez is a very young child who just wants to dance with the other kids after working so hard. To see that rewarded gives the black characters just a little bit more agency than the original musical needed.
@@oscarsoto8428 does she win in the broadway show too or just the movie?
@@jessicadawson2192 just the movie.
Can we appreciate the costume department for a minute I mean the dresses they chose were perfect to show the movement and flow of the dancers as they span and danced
Dear Carolyn Price's words have only struck deep chords !!! We loveth the Carolyn !!!
And Tracy's dress actually symbolizes the 2 different colour skinned coming together to make perfect even patterns. With only 1 colour it's boring, but with 2 colours coming together it makes a beautiful pattern if they come in harmony.

Not to mention the ending credits song, Come so far(got so far to go) is also amazing.
"They love you, Link!"
"Yeah? Not for long!"
I love that knowing that as he brings Inez on stage, the crowd is going to completely forget about him and go crazy for her amazing dancing!
Oh no the reason why he said that is because he was bringing on Inez and there was still very much institutionalised racidm
@@snowyowl2784 both interpretions are valid tbh, there are people who love Inez and those who hate him for bringing in Inez
👽👽😇😇🙃🥳😎
Honestly, one of the things that warms my heart in this scene is Corny himself. Throughout the movie we see him try to bring new and fresh ideas to the show, such as bringing Tracy on board and suggesting that they integrate the show permanently. When Link brings Inez onto the stage, Corny knows her name despite her not having been on the show before, and he likely knew about her through Maybelle and Seaweed mentioning Inez wanting to dance on the show someday. You can also see the utter surprise and delight in his eyes at 3:59 as he announces her the winner, and the lack of hesitation he has in shutting Velma down, mentioning the side clause in the handbook mentioning that ANYONE can dance for the Miss Hairspray title. Then he announces the best part - the show is officially and forever integrated - and brings Maybelle onto the stage, telling her what she should've been told long before - "This is your time". Love Corny so much
Unsung hero of this movie
So true!
Agreed.
And don't forget Maybelle's look of utter pride at 6:51
Really, he’s ahead of his time, not many tv show hosts would have thought the way he did.
Random fact: This song was nicknamed "You Can't Stop to Breath" by the cast because of how fast it went. Only Queen Latifah had no problems with it due to her history in rap.
+The Ravaloxian Whovian That's really cool. Thanks for sharing. I'd like to see the rehearsals for the whole movie, it must've been fun.
The Ravaloxian Whovian
Well, Queen Latifah also only had to dance and sing for the last two minutes or so of it - that probably helped.
@@jesscarrier4180 Except she sang as much as the other characters, what the fuck?
Man I tried ringing it a home and I sound like I'm dying
Yeah, except Queen Latifah had only a little part to the song and she didn't dance as much so...
I'm not saying Queen Latifah's history in rap is irrelevant to why she doesn't have a problem to the song. I'm just saying that having a small part and not having to dance much, contributed to her not having to catch her breath to the song, in comparison to the backup dancers, Zac, and Nikki, who had to sing and dance through most of the song.
The casting director of this movie is the real MVP istg. All the actors brought out their 110% in this, whether they are major or minor characters.

Him totaly rolling with tracy and inez inclusion was allready great but that he purposefuly gave the stage back to its unrightfuly banished queen makes it even so much better. According to the DVD extra features, it took only 2 takes for Queen Latifah to record her lines and with such clarity but everyone else struggled to breathe because of how wordy this song is and Queen Latifah was like "I'm a rapper, I got this" She is absolutely deserving of her crown 👑 and also Miss Maybelle has the best outfits!
She has a nice voice too. I thought she’d be all deep and gospel like Aretha Franklin or something, but no, it’s light and pleasant.
Absolute queen shit
Queen 👑 UwU
she’s not ‘QUEEN’ latifah for no reason!
@@yourlocalbi9811 your mother?
John Travolta and Christopher Walken are a true power couple
IM CACKLING JNDUJFEJIFEINED
my pp is really hard
TK slimjim same, and I'm female ;)
Right
John Travolta has a wife. Just because he plays a woman in Hairspray, doesn’t mean that he’s gay.
小さい頃に見て23歳になった今もずっと大好きな映画です❤❤ハッピーな気持ちになれるし色々なことを学べる映画です!!!いつまでも大好き
I only watch the Hairspray Live, didn't know there's this version. But I gotta admit, You Can't Stop The Beat in this version is better than the Live for me.
This song just literally screamed and fight any negativity in the world, Racism, Transphobia, Homophobia etc. it's just so much energy and it's heartwarming.
If you have netflix or HBO max you can watch it there!
You have to watch it entirely. I couldn't make it through the Live version. I was like y'all keep saying Ariana Grande got pipes but why was Amanda Amanda waaaaaay better in the movie?!
@@doanwatch_me7721 Amanda is the best Penny ever. She was an incredible actress and singer.
@@doanwatch_me7721 Ariana did not fit the part, AT ALL. I actually think she and Dove should have switched roles, cuz I see Amber as a better part for Ariana, and Dove would have been a great Penny.
The only reason I sat through the live version was so I could see Harvey Firesein come out of the giant hairspray can for his big moment. I understand people have their own opinions, and mine is that Ariana Grande is just not a good enough singer for anything she does outside of a controlled recording environment.
Yeah, all those are great performance,. But Queen Latifah walked in and brought everyone to church.
AMEN, dear Dan Onil-of-Galang.
my favorite comment!!💓
This musical is life. We need this now.
Musicals are my life
So your life was lived in the 1960's?
I KNOW!!!!!!!!!!
+PaintingOfTheMind. They're saying that it's life.
Erin Parks
OH. Okay. >.> Sorry lol. I thought it was "This musical might as well be my life." not "I could breathe this instead of air and survive."
I remember being obsessed with movie as a child.
this still brings so much joy so much fun I so miss Amanda Bynes. She was so wonderful in this. I have to believe some of her is still underneath and her heart and soul maybe one day she'll find the beat again!
Can we all recognise how powerful those women are for being able to DANCE IN HIGH HEELS!!!!
True
And John Travolta
Espeshly 6:04 John Travolta 😉
And drag queen ;)
Im a dancer and it is all about the ankle strength.
I just understood why Tracy's wearing a checkerboard dress
Lol me too😂
In the original run of the broadway version she wore a similar dress
I thought it was meant to mean that she supported integration. She's single, but she's not an unwed mother. Correct me if I'm wrong. Isn't that the reason?
Andrea Blacker You are right. Also, the style of the dress and her hair showed how progressive and ahead of the curve she was because those styles became popular in the later 60's.
Thank you. That makes lots of sense!
The one thing I love about this particular scene is that both Amber and Velma for once are pretty much being told no if you will. Their ego is deservingly shattered! Now I will say I’m proud that Amber actually accepted it, but Velma was still in the “world revolves around me” state of mind. Some people just don’t learn
Not to mention Velma admitted, on live TV, that she switched the tallies so Amber could win. She practically admitted to cheating.
3:27 Penny's realisation that she's on live TV is priceless. XD
Don't worry Amber, in a few years you'll dye your hair red, and somehow convince a tiny DJ to join your a cappella group. It gets better, sweetheart.
Lol I was thinking the same thing. Pitch Perfect meets Hairspray
wait what really
ohhhhhh Nvm
BGTitanAvatar don't forget she went to prom a year after hairspray and her friends were murdered
iiMaginationKingii Oh shit I forgot about that too
Queen Latifah is the best what i find amazing is the fact she does not seem like she ages at all she is always looking young and beautiful
Funtime foxy black dont crack ! 😄
Funtime foxy I
Funtime foxy She's BOSS!!!!! The voice and acting. A true talent
Agreed
Funtime foxy IKRR SHE IS ALWAYS SO BEAUTIFUL
6:10 his reaction was real! They kept it in the movie because it was just too damn good!🤣
its not
Bro is like an NPC whahahahahaj
Christopher Walken's character doesn't get as much love as he deserves. He loves his wife and daughter and supports them both unconditionally.
Throughout the entire film you can tell John is having the time of his life in this role. And this was Nikki Blonsky's first role and she knocked it out of the park. Evryone looked like they were having in this movie. Always puts in the right mood. The positive energy radiates off this film and I love it.
Travolta loves to dance, hes always dancing I love it! Great actor, tragic life. I often do think of him.
I read that Nikki was such a natural dancer, that some of the cast who had been dancing professionally for years had to up their game to match her.
I love the host in this routine, Someone comes down from a rocket and starts dancing. Ok. A ‘White’ only show but a little black girl is invited to dance by the most popular male dancer, sure. Stage randomly invaded, brilliant. Handshake turned into a hand slap, cool. He could be fired, tells her to shut it
He just rolls with it all
Corny is an amazing person
Indeed, dear Lucie-of-Ellis ... it is as though the host (Corney Collins) could represent Joe Biden, Maybelle (played by Queen Latifah) could represent Shamala Gopalan-Haris whilst Little Ioness (her daughter) could represent Kamala Harris. History, as always, is manifesting once again in the present !!! GOD BLESS THOSE EDUCATIONAL 1960s AND 70s !!!
I don’t know if I’m looking too deep into it but you can also tell he’s not putting on a face for the camera by the fact he’s just grooving out in the background shots as well as when he’s properly in frame when everyone else is grooving
I’m in love with Corny Collins lol
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice good
Bittersweet seeing Amanda Bines here.
She was at her best here and who would have known 3 years later was the end of her career because of that ass!!!
I do forget sometimes how talented Amanda Bynes is
"Not a chance, Velma. This is the future." Great moment.
Lily Luna that moment was my favorite
Mine was when he cited rule 30, paragraph 5. "Teehee, my reasoning beats out your bigotry and I have the law on my side. Suck it, Velma."
Lily Luna indeed!!!!!!
I'm so glad that Inez wins in the movie version. Tracy doesn't need to win the show because she already won her personal battles. The script just makes more sense for Inez to win. Hairspray revivals should take note of that.
Preach🌟💕
This film is just so colourful, well meaning, and joyful, truly a pleasure to watch to this day
I've seen this musical like a hundred times and this part still makes me cry every time
Spanish: somos dos. Abrazos desde Argentina para tí ❤🖤💛💚💙🧡💗💟💞
