Honestly, the generosity of Howard and Guy really does make me a bit emotional, because the music industry like many is really competitive, and has to be. It takes years of hard work learning audio production and developing a sound, once you have it you don't give it away to keep an edge over the competition. Howard here is giving away a full look behind the scenes of real chart topping music, and incredible songs at that.
And i can see that they gain nothing from doing this, they are doing it out of incredible generosity, to give a massive help to the budding producers, to inpire new music, but also because they know the struggle. Incredibly thoughtful and kind.
For me its huge, because Disclosure became a reference for me to aim for. Back when Daft Punk, Ed Banger camp and Eric Prydz were the big sound. Disclosure's sound came in with mainstream quality, a bit louder than the rest, but clear and airy. The kick drums alone use to drive me nuts trying to emulate lol. I could make good tracks/music, but if you don't understand the 'framework' of audio capture, then you don't really understand yet where you are aiming in terms of engineering. It takes years, but off and on, somehow, it finally comes together. And its funny now to see their projects, because i was not far off at all back then, i just didnt have the knowledge to confirm that what i was doing was on the right path. I was told of all the different ways they made their music, 'its all analogue mate, and high end mastering'. We didnt think you could get such lush sounds ITB. And here we are all Logic plugins 😂
I hope people can appreciate the sauce being given away here, none of this info was available back in the day. You had to know someone.
Its years of work. Lives dedicated to music. Now almost all the info is available online for free. We thought everyone having access to production would be a good thing, but it hasnt really played out that way. Instead, people are spoilt and lazy, and everyone just places samples and makes the same old Trap beats. Music isn't really in a good place right now imo. I think music scenes, underground especially, produced better results.
We lost that. It was a far bigger culture. On a positive note, there have been a few great creative artists who may have never had a shot at music, but they are drowned by the ocean of Trap kits 😂 and i be damned if anyone can earn a living from the streaming model. I think i will cater to a niche i love and sell via Bandcamp.
Anyway !! This is a big thank you to Howard and Guy, i absolutely love you guys, your music is incredible, sound scape inspirational, and a whole lot of your songs will stay with me for life -but these acts of generosity just put you in a special place of high praise and respect for me.

I'm of the opinion that it's been possible to make release quality tracks on pretty much any DAW since around 2002.
Kind of. The plugins were not exactly brilliant back then, nor was the functionality on the DAWs. You would also have had to compete with full analogue studios and equipment in 2002, and your digital work would have sounded very weak and brittle in comparison. Most of the DAWs available were centred around MIDI function. Cubase 4 didnt come out until 2006, but it was Cubase 5 that really kicked off the audio and midi integrated DAW that we know of today, and that wasn't released until 2009.
Now, if you said 'digital' since 2002, then yes. Something like the Sony Oxford console was available, which had dsp processors onboard (which were later released as Sonnox plugins in 2006), and that console would only have cost you $1 million. Lmao.
I’ve been watching these sessions for a few weeks now. Bought a few plugins (There was huge sales on Pluginboutique and Waves). My tracks are sounding 5 times better now.
Guy looks like the kinda guy you could hang out with for months before he tells you he’s in Disclosure. He looks so humble!
90% stock plugins, no plugins on master bus! Yeah you don't need to spend a lot of money to make a hit!

I've a question that has probably been asked alot.... As a newbie music producer... When I listen to latch on RUclips or Spotify for example... Theres pristine clarity in the finished product... My question is, where does this clarity happen... Is it the Instruments, mix down, mastering, sound selection or all of the above. And also... Do you know what i mean lol
That seems to be the hardest part to master, it’s a combination of everything but mixing is probably the biggest chunk. Learn EQ first!
