NPH was believable. Carrey was just a hokey mistake for the role. It took me two episodes to figure out who Neil was playing. With Carrey, I thought, oh god, not another Jim Carrey movie. Good actor versus someone who plays himself in a role.
Same but Jim was good too. Sure He was himself but then again I like Olaf trying goofy to lower the kid's suspicions and be pretty creepy himself. Beware the silly ones they may be killers. Besides NPH is campy too.
This is the scene that finally made me buy NPH as Count Olaf. I felt like before, the disguises were used as comedic relief, and he rarely showed Olaf's menacing side, imo. But this...dang. Endless chills.
The first time I saw this episode, I was entirely creeped out. A scene like this had never made me feel so personally creeped out before besides paranormal stuff. You know you’ve got a good actor though when you have to get a few episodes in to figure out where an actor is, only to have him be the main character. It took me literally three episodes to figure out he played Olaf.
I'm glad they did this particular pair of episodes justice; "The Hostile Hospital" was notorious for being significantly darker than every other book in the series and they certainly didn't shy away from fulfilling that for the show. Mattathias is definitely my second-favourite (after Detective Dupin) Olaf disguise in the show, just because he's SO CREEPY while donning it.
Exactly. I love the show but I thought this season just seemed like the first, UNTIL it got to the hospital! Shit was so foreboding and almost horrific! I too am glad other felt this book was more darker and the series treated it as such.
Yeah, that disguise made me believe that Count Olaf is a mad doctor trying to conduct evil experiments rather than an actor who is out to kill the Baudelaires. :P
I liked these episodes but Olaf never really was scary for me. I enjoyed his comedic performance but never got scary from him from NPHs performance. That goes to Esme. They actress did a good job with her.
aeris44 You're certainly not wrong about Esmé; I was concerned that Lucy Punch would be a poor casting choice, but with the benefit of hindsight I'd say that was mostly just due to me picturing the character differently when reading the books. She really blew me away - easily one of Season 2's strongest additions.
Scrummy64 Haha agree. For me it was just cuz she was supposed to be a brunette. But the actress really just was a great addition for this season. She brings the necessary darkness for Olaf’s troupe in the show.
no, not really. It was really plain and boring for me, although it was creepy and well shot. But the whole show has unfunny jokes in it to keep it PG, and it really ruins the show, and it doesn’t do justice to the books
Jesus. Yes Olaf is fun to watch but good god THIS is exactly represents the outright evil of his character. There’s no redemption here, no remorse. Just a ruthless killer who’d gladly kill children for ever daring to cross him.
Hii 🥺 I wanted to let you know we've all sinned and fallen short of God's Glory. Jesus came to earth and died for our sins so that we don't have to go to hell. If we repent of our sins we can go to Heaven and spend eternity with God rather than suffer in hell! Heaven is going to be so amazing and you don't want to miss it 🥺❤️
Favorite episodes yet. They truly felt like they were literally taken from the books, with the incredibly dark tone, emotion, and how I really felt like the kids have the most spotlight finally instead of the adult characters/actors outshining them (though obviously of course, this is NPH as Olaf at his best). This scene is SO CREEPY, though the one that got me most of all was the part where they put her to sleep; I genuinely felt _very_ uncomfortable and scared, and scared for Violet, even though I knew she'd be okay. But even if she does survive, just the fact that they managed to use anesthesia on her for no reason is utterly _HORRIFYING._
Chris Winterfield yes but like in the book, they used the anesthesia to perform the craineoectomy on her (luckily it didn’t happen) so that they could kill Violet.
The Hostile Hospital and The Ersatz Elevator were two of my favorites. Lucy Punch did a great job playing Esme. This episode in particular is very dark. It has a very uncomfortable vibe to it.
oh my freaking god. this is TERRIFYING. The way he gets so close to her, how he just casually speaks of killing her and her siblings brutally, and maybe WORSE. And what's worse, this is completely in character. This IS Count Olaf.
Olaf is leaning towards violet in a way that’s repulsive to say the least, meanwhile Violet is moving away because she can’t breathe HAHAAHHAHA If this doesn’t summarize their relationship, I don’t know what does.
Can I just say how shocked I am at nph’s acting skills?! I knew he was a great performer and super funny comedian, but never considered him creepy or threatening. In the first season, he was slimy and disgusting, but here is where he shines. Seriously, EVERY time I see this scene my stomach turns upside down, and his body language throughout the hostile hospital episodes ( towards everyone but especially violet ) is unimaginably creepy. That bit where he stroked her hair and throat very slowly after calling her “little sleeping beauty” ( you may or may not know what happens to the princess in the original fable ) is skin crawling, to me. WOW. Props to him.
Sarah Lange listen, that’s a big part of him, actually. If he wasn’t “charming”, no one would fall for him. He manipulates everyone extremely well, and being “charming” doesn’t necessarily mean being kind and or handsome lol but yeah, also I was joking :v
Mmm for me, NPHs acting was one of my least favorite things about this series. He had great comedic timing when it came to the humor, I enjoyed I’m in disguises, but I don’t feel her personally pulled off the scary aspect of Olaf well, especially with that forced voiced he does for him. I don’t think he pulled it off, it’s so showy.
She gets raped by the prince and gives birth whilst in her sleep...I don't remember exactly if she wakes up because of it or not even that, but she eventually wakes up, Still, when the man sees her defenseless, he rapes her.
Remember that scene in the book where he rubs a knife up and down her thigh, also how he always singles her out when talking about which Baudelaire to keep alive cause she's "the prettiest" he has a weird infatuation with Violet it's way more present in the books
I remember back when I heard NPH was going to play Count Olaf adn I thought "There's no way I'm going to find NPH intimidating." I was wrong. Oh, I was wrong.
The scariest part in this is how he's basically rubbing knives on her and how he leaned on her face in a too sexual way for me to not want to vomit my guts out. "I won't be satisfied with just your fortune." *DUDE DO YOU HAVE A DEATHWISH*

It’s just creepy all around, and I definitely see what he’s thinking of doing in these small gestures. But maybe I’m just a degenerate lol
Those Hostile Hospital episodes are so creepy. Having to go to the hospital, getting a shot and having an unwanted surgery are a few of my top fears. Count Olaf did a great job of pretending to be an evil doctor. Makes me forget that he's an actor and instead makes me think he's a mad doctor. Especially when he was threatening Violet, putting the anesthetic mask on her and when he was in the operating theater. If I were in Violet's place in the part 2 episode, I would probably be petrified, have a panic attack, have a heart attack, die of shock or all four. :P Sorry if that makes me a coward. :P Maybe I might cluck like a chicken. NPH certainly plays up the comedy, and while the dumbing down of Olaf isn’t something i am totally a fan of, he still pulls off the threat of Olaf pretty well, especially in this scene. Carey, on the other hand, has the benefit of having a smarter Olaf (which is honestly more accurate to the books imo), which lets him also seem more threatening. also, Carey’s Olaf is much better at actually acting in his disguises, which again, makes him much more of a threat. they’re both great.

It’s one of the most suspenseful and well written-close to books episodes in the show up to this point (also the last book I read up to when i was little) 2. I have extreme medical anxiety and trauma with hospitals so the entire episode makes me feel so nauseous lmao
This is one of those shows that benefits a lot on rewatch bonus; knowing what happened to Olaf's dad, and how he blames the Baudilaire line for it, makes the scene tragic as well as horrifying.

ASOUE should’ve been a 15 so then they could’ve done more. I don’t understand how this was a pg. and what makes it even darker is how over the seasons, it was shown how revolting Olaf could be when he was around violet and only violet. He tried to marry her, get her in his bed, murder her, he tied her down and put tape over her mouth so she couldn’t scream, gassed her with amnesia to knock her out, touched her. Right from when I saw the crows in a vile village I knew that there would be a murder and it was so frightening how I worked it out before hand and how it hugely foreshadowed the murder of Snicket
Hostile hospital was definitely scarier then all the rest. It was soo fear inducing. Like the fear that they were gonna fall from the unfinished area of the hospital, or the fear when esme hunts down the baudelaires in the library of records. Or of coure the general fear of count olaf, he really went all out in his disguise here. Generally felt like a short horror film you would see on youtube.
Sarah Lange I know I just freaking love how this series makes count Olaf more perverted towards violet than in the books and I really wish they had that line he says in the 9th book which is I hope it's violet cuz she is the prettiest one 😁
Sarah Lange oh k I was thinking about someone making a video with the Netflix series of unfortunate events count Olaf and violet with the song sweet dreams by Eurythmics 😁
And there are some who still believe Jim Carrey was the better Olaf? Jesus christ, another instance of a famous actor being praised for playing themselves. Carrey's portrayal was boring and uninspired. NPH was incredible. An absolute perfect fit. This isn't an opinion, it's a fact that he was the better choice for this role.
Litrally, this is terryfying even tho I watched and I know that it will be fine. The most horryfing part when they use an thing just to try and kill her. Lucky it did not happen tho.

"Oh I'm counting on it"
Counting
COUNTing
Hehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehe
This makes me reevaluate what he is like
Good pun 👍😎
I see what you did there!
Gawt DAMN that was legitimately terrifying 😱
Is it weird that I'm creeped out but enticed at the same time because he has pretty eyes? That's NPH's natural eye color, too.
1:08 violets face is like
Boiiii You Breath Stank
Next episodes in january😭
I can't wait!!!!
nph's audition for dexter
Right from when I saw the crows in a vile village I knew that there would be a murder and it was so frightening how I worked it out before hand and how it hugely foreshadowed the murder of Snicket
This is related to the nurses office song ngl ;-;
Neil is always cast as an insane and terrifying character, but i think he does it so well, that people cast him FOR that insanity
Oh yEs nph is so terrifying 👻😱! Neil Patrick Harris is so good in this episode and so so so terrifying!
Where did you get this? I want to try posting my own ASOUE videos.
bro the outfit made it even more dramatic, the head thingy puts a lot if character on
I really want them to make a soundtrack of the background music.
For me I love both jims was hilarious in the movie and I love this one cause is closer to the book
1:45 Idk why but it sounds like he was whistling the theme song.
The thing that also made Dr Mattathias scary is that he can still whistle after threatening ppl😝😝
I totally thought he was gonna kiss violet when he was leaning over her and in her face in this scene
Sarah Lange I know I just freaking love how this series makes count Olaf more perverted towards violet than in the books and I really wish they had that line he says in the 9th book which is I hope it's violet cuz she is the prettiest one 😁
Sarah Lange same here lol 😂😂😂
Sarah Lange yeah he has lol 😂😂😂
Sarah Lange totally great 😁😁😁
Sarah Lange oh k I was thinking about someone making a video with the Netflix series of unfortunate events count Olaf and violet with the song sweet dreams by Eurythmics 😁
“Be right there my pet.” Lol, I love this scene and it’s pretty dang scary!
Won't that be FUN
And there are some who still believe Jim Carrey was the better Olaf? Jesus christ, another instance of a famous actor being praised for playing themselves. Carrey's portrayal was boring and uninspired. NPH was incredible. An absolute perfect fit. This isn't an opinion, it's a fact that he was the better choice for this role.
I think by far the worst death would have been Charles being sawed in half if he hadn't been saved. 😫😵💫
It was more terrifying for us headphone users...
Litrally, this is terryfying even tho I watched and I know that it will be fine.
The most horryfing part when they use an thing just to try and kill her.
Lucky it did not happen tho.
Tbh, in that situation, I would say "If you let us free, we'll surely give you the fortune, just leave us alone" and he will start threatening me even more :/
This is extremely uncomfortable but for some wired reason I keep watching it
Is it just me
nope i'm very happy that they have count Olaf interacting with violet more 😁
Why as a kid did I always like the hospital seen but now I see this as very disgusting and horrible act and I can’t believe this was for children
Ok, when Olaf was in violets and babs face I would’ve spat in his face and say “ you needed a clean” 😂
He would want too kill you even more.
Malina Weissman is so cute
Wish it was more terrifying but good:)
Alyssa Huffstickler it’s a children series, I’d say it’s pretty terrifying even for an adult. If you want the realistic parts of this, you’ll have to watch Criminal minds
RBP alright thx
@@SARCOSISARCOSA yay another criminal minds fan!!!
I feel like this ep should have been 15
A Fake doctor’s work in never done. 😂😂😂
I would have loved to see Nickelodeon at least done a second or third installment.
When count olaf is actually terrifying and weird at the same time.
the most scare thing I've ever scene
I wanted to the part where he administered justice to violet
WHAT THE FWACK (if ducks could talk)
In the episode Hospital it feel like I am in chroma by count Olaf but that is just my dream
