Aussies are the best, I first heard john when animal planet had Steve Irwin's memorial televised. I've been hooked on the true blue singer and I love this song
Love this song but it's bittersweet listening to it , my son was born in Australia and we moved to the Uk when he was one I would often sing this to him and he loved it, but now he hasn't spoken to me for 5 years and I have no idea why? But the memories of his little infectious laugh when I used to sing it brings a smile to my face.
John sang this song in a talent show, in the 70s..and incidentally he won the competition, daryl somers from hey hey its saturday and his band came 2nd to john in the same competition
I think almost everyone in my including me love john Williamson my dad got me started on him when I was a little girl about 3 or 4 I'm 13 now and still love and I will never forget him
When I was little, we had a cassette with maybe twenty "Australian" songs on it (I'm since convinced that a couple of them were Irish, but that's neither here nor there) - this one was my favourite. I'm not sure whether it was the "oom-ba-da-litchi-da-dar-da" or comparing emus to galahs and budgies, but my sister and I both loved it!
Brilliant! such a fantastic song writer! i had john Williamson family album on tape when i was about 10! and i sitill have it,,,and yes i still play it and it brings a smile to my face!
just aewesome this is made in the 1960s wow, so im listening to it and im an 80s baby and my son is 7 born 2003 loves this song too lol awesome how songs travel through generations aint it
what and absolute aussie legend im only 14 but i live in the country growing up with john williamsons music i listen to him everyday literally. my last name is williamson and iv got and uncle named john so his name is john williamsom so i used to tell everyone my uncle is john williamson i used to get all the chicks saying that still do. ITS AND GIFT to be an aussie
Me and my cousin had this CRANKED while driving through a track at Fraser Island, i can tell ya, the old man emu suspension were working hard on that track.
My dude, music wasn't better back then and music isn't worse nowadays. It's simply that time is like a sieve, the bad stuff slowly gets forgotten until only the best remain. There's plenty of great music today, time just hasn't removed the trash yet. That said, I'm glad to report that they still do teach this in schools, or at least they did when I was in primary school around 6 years ago.
i remember playing this song over and over again whilest travelling across the nullabor. 3 days it took us with this song. and we didnt get too sick of it ha ha
Nothing makes you feel more australian when your drinking a coldy whilst having a flick and listening to johnny whilst sitting next to a fire on the beach
The best advice i can give anyone is listen to Rolf Harris version when stoned - you will be rolling on the floor laughing literally - ive done it a few times and couldnt breathe! Funniest thing ever!
I love this song and i'm 13 so good music lasts not this modern stuff you'd get 5-6 months then people say 'what the hell is that crap" when you start singing it. Now i am going to annoy the buggery out of my friends at school tomorrow.
It's out-there stuff. But as an kid, hearing this on road trips in Aus with the family - it's ridiculous, quirky and great! We just are what we are! Go us lol :-)
I'm being dragged to a karaoke work christmas party. I hate Karaoke. My office has ages from 20's to 50's. Everyone is talking about what they are going to sing. People have announced that they plan on doing Chuck Berry, Oasis, Cold Play, Brittany, Lady Gaga, etc. If forced to go on stage, I'm thinking of doing this one - raw if it isn't on the play list. How do you think that would go down? It's such a happy clap along song and this is an Aussie Christmas.
This makes me proud to be An Aussie ❤ John Williamson for ever :)
Still the greatest song for Aussie kids, EVER written. 'Onya John. . Ya' legend!!!!

One of the last surviving Australian Country Artist that still sings with an Australian accent
Oh yeah!
One of my pet-hates is to hear a song about Mt Isa (or wherever) sung in a Nashville accent. Grrrrrrr!

I know he's tracksyncing to his recorded version, but it still is awesome. Never saw young John before, thanks.
i love it
Definitely the Aussie equivalent of Bob Dylan.
+Stu Pidity Totally agree, except a heck of a lot more fun than Bob ;)
That and you can make out what he's singing.
Although it'd be difficult for non-Australians to make out what he's singing too.
Stu Pidity They probably wouldn't know who Thrush is though.
> Stu Pidity. (minus the drugs.)
