  • This song has so many teaching opportunities! First of all, "bully" is heard throughout the song. Ask the kids what "bully" means to them. With emphasis in preventing bullying in schools, they understand that a bully is a person to torments another student. When this song was sung on ships in the late 16th century, "bully" meant an admirable, gallant, or jolly person. Quite a different meaning!

The ship in this video is the HMS Victory anchored in Portsmouth, England. Not a yankee ship, but a period ship nonetheless.
    Lyrics:
A yankee ship came down the river (blow boys blow)
Her mast did bend her sails did shiver (blow, my bully boys, blow)
A who do you think was captain of her?. . .
Why bully Hays was captain of her. . .
What do you think they had for dinner. . .
'Twas pickled eels feet and chicken liver. . .
They sailed away for London city. . .
She never got there, mores the pity. . .
