That's when LA was like Vegas. Everybody wanted a date with LA. From the 70's until about '85. Then LA's cinematic gang life got portrayed nationally. Then everybody got intimidated and avoided LA. Even though LA was never a country music bastion. Their awards were hosted during those years in LA. Believe me LA was comparable to visiting Hawaii. For anybody outside of California. Not so much so now.
I always thought it was obvious that Newman song was just a tongue-in-cheek honest take, the good and bad, the genuine and the facade that is LA. Real Angelenos hate LA as much as they love it and recognize its duality. No one likes the traffic, no one likes all the bums, no one likes the superficial Hollywood nonsense. These are just the price of admission to live in an otherwise great city. I've lived all over, and the only thing that keeps me away from LA nowadays are the atrocious rents. If housing ever becomes reasonable again, I'll return home in a heartbeat.
😂😂😂 A real Angeleno would never leave Los Angeles or say they hate it. Are there things to dislike, sure. What city doesn't have things to dislike? I've traveled to quite a few cities, and nothing compares to LA. Greatest city on earth.
@@dburch7894 Same. Moved away to go work in Silicon Valley, and by the time I tried to move back it just didn't make sense anymore. We make the same in central California, but the rents are half of what they are in LA. We still go down 2-3 times a year and visit old friends and relatives, and it is still my home.
I always wondered if the line "big nasty red by my side" was about the girl in the passenger's seat or the restored red Buick he's driving in the video (apparently he owned the car).
Grew up in the Bay Area and I LOVE THIS SONG!
I’m surprised it didn’t crack the top 200. I used to see it all the time on MTV back in 1983.

It was the billboard Hot 100 that I love LA failed to chart.

Native here! LA is home no matter where I reside.
I miss home.

Well said, I lived here all my life it’s a city I love and hate both equally. It really does represent the best and worst of America.
The movie Naked Gun also gave it a bump
There's bums everywhere ! That's not a regrettable line!

Considering it was “redhead”, pretty much the passenger :)
Dodgers wins world series
Nothing says LA like LA traffic.
