You know there is an old medieval legend being told in Germany claiming Friedrich Barbarossa didn't really die but sleeps in a secret dwarven fortress underneath the Untersberg to this day. The Untersberg is a mountain with numerous caves that lies on the border of Germany and Austria and is said to be a location were many strange things happen to wanderers. In the medieval times there were already numerous tales about the mountain, one claiming it is the home of the Wild Hunt, but even today there are numerous reports of people claiming that time runs slower in and around the mountain, that there are portals to other dimensions, meetings with paralel versions of yourself and people gone missing for days and reappearing, claiming to have been missing only a few minutes. Even the Dalai Lama says the mountain is one of the Heart Chakras of the world, being the Heart Chackra of Europe. The tale of Barbarossa says he will wake from his sleep every one hundred years. Then he will tell his dwarven squire to look for the ravens of the mountain. If the ravens are still there flying around the mountain's peak he will continue to sleep. But if the ravens are absent, that is the day of Armageddon/Judgement Day and he will rise from his fortress and return to fight in the last battle of good and evil. Following the German myth this battle takes place at the Pear Tree of the Walser Field which is a tree near the Untersberg. (This tree is replanted every time it dies until today even). As long as Barbarossa sleeps his body is tended to by the dwarves of the mountain and his ever growing beard is wrapped around a table. When his beard goes around the table three times it said to be the beginning of the apocalypse and the end times. As of now his beard is said to have made two rounds around the table. Another version of the myth says it is Charlemagne who sleeps underneath the montain. So if you ever are to visit the Untersberg: Look for the ravens. And if you don't see any... well... I guess that would be a sign to worry about.
There is a similar legend in Slovenija only in our version the sleeping king is Mátyás Hunyadi and the mountain Peca. There is some evidence that sugests the legend of the sleeping king might predate even Charlemagne.
@@lukethedank13 That's so interesting. I just read It may derive from the Middle Germanic God Wodan (known as Odin). When he comes back then Ragnarok starts, and after the final battle peace will be restored to the world. To me it seems the idea of peace having to be brought by a new king or emperor also relates to Christian messianic beliefs and the general wishful thinking that one day Charlemagne or a new Roman Emperor shall bring back prosperity and glory of the olden days (Make SPQR Great Again). Also seems that this inspired Tolkien somewhat, thinking about Aragorn as the last heir from the line of Isildur, and the battle of battles against Sauron, and the peace and prosperity after that.
A really dark song for a civilization that knew dark ages like no others (Roman Conquest, Barbaric Invasions, HRE instability and the end of Charlemagne's empire, the war with the French from the 16th century to the early 18th, the Napoleonic humiliation, WW1 and of course WW2) but managed to stay on top in Europe during all its existence and gave birth to a population of hard-workers, engineers, philosophers, musicians, scientists, thinkers, formidable foes and much appreciated allies.
To be honest that could describe Germany’s history pretty well. Germany’s history is confusing because well Germany wasn’t Germany till the 19th century but let’s say the Germany we know today started with Prussia, I don’t know much about Prussian history but based on what we know on the United Germany we can say they’ve had a sad a mournful history. After the German empire was founded, Germany became the most advanced country in mainland Europe, it started becoming the center of culture, science but then on a random day in 1914, the heir to the austro Hungarian throne was assassinated and it led to the second biggest conflict the world has seen, which Germany unfairly got the blame for. As a result of humiliation and just crippling conditions, it led to the rise of Nazi’s, and they lost, Germany was split into two nations, a country divided only to be united in 1989. And now it’s slowly becoming what it once was, the center of culture, power, industry and science in Europe. I’d say sad and mournful fits Germany history in a good way.
@@themysteriousgamers9616 Germany was the Regnum Teutonicum of the Holy Roman Empire. An oddity compared to the nation states emerging in its neighborhood.
