You should sew the sleeve cuff halfway up too. This creates a pocket in your sleeve, and is where the Japanese carry their personal effects, since there are no pockets on the body of the garment itself. Excellent description of setting the sleeves in, btw!!
Thank you Laura for the fabulous tutorial. I am a novice at sewing, but followed your great instructions and succeeded in making my grand daughter a kimono gown. Xx
This has been one of the best child's garment video's I have ever seen. Done with clarity and precise sewing. I love it. I love t watch you and you never cease to inspire my imagination. Please keep you the awesome work. Thank you.
On the thumbnail the right side is crossing over the left side which is the way dead people are dressed. Yukata should never be worn like that. I don't know if somebody already told you but you should keep that in mind!
The measurement do not add up for me….in the very beginning you state to cut one back piece 14 X25 and two front pieces 11 X 25 each. Which I did. Then you said to measure in 3 inch from the center on both front pieces to make the triangle cut (3X10)…that leaves a shoulder of 8 inches on both sides of the front pieces. Attaching those to the back piece that is only 14 inches does not work as they overlap and do not look like your demo garment. 8+8 is 16 and the back piece of fabric is only 14 inches. What am I missing here? I do not see any other people having this issue or I figured it has to be something I am missing lol
Sew Very Easy indeed! This advanced beginner found your video easy to follow and the finished product so cute. I cannot wait to make one for my grandson.
This was a very enjoyable and easy to watch video. Well done! I especially liked how you explained and finished the neck. Im hoping to make a kimono style dress for myself
Another thing with the pattern you use for the kimono or yukata is that it should mimic the season or event you want to wear it for. For example you’d wear flowers in spring as to not upstage the beauty of the flowers. Same with the other seasons.
FYI, the right panel should be under the left!!! This is super important for kimono/yukata as they only dress the dead with the right panel on top of the left.
that was fun & relatively easy even for beginners; I made one using origami (chiyogami) paper with similar steps. Doesn't matter but the Japanese over flap from left to right (so right hand can go right into bodice). (extra info: before sewing machines existed, the Japanese sewed all by hand & to wash, unstitched pieces, then resewed -- horrifying after sewing successfully the first time; : )
Question in the center back where you added the curve you mentioned 1/2 inch it looks like 5/8 or even a inch. Can I use the standard dept of back neck in order to get the same results? Thanks
I loved this tutorial! I was thinking about sewing a kimono robe for my son, for xmas. Could you please tell me, what measurements should l take to make him one? Thank you ☺️
Looks like a straight grain piece. I like to use a bias where there's any curve involved, but our teacher shows how to clip the curve to make it lie flat. (For me, less bother to use a bias piece, but that takes more fabric. . . )
Very nice. Thanks. Easy and simple instructions! Loved it! Can we follow the same for an adult? Regarding the width of the kimono back, is it wider than the actual shoulder measurement ? I think yours was 14" which would be wider than a child's shoulder length is it not? How much would I need to take for a 16" shoulder? Kindly advise. Thank you.
I do not have the measurements for that size. Measure the child back and length and go from there. I would just make it 2" bigger than the baby's back. Hope this helps
I dont understand the measurements for the front and back. Please help. You said to make the back piece 14 inches wide and the front pieces 11 inches wide. The to cut 3 inches out of the collar. This will leave me with 2 x 8 inch front pieces. If i add these to the back piece they will overlap. I dont understand. Thank you kindly!
Than you very much for your introducing kimono. In our custom we put leftside on rlght. The way you did is for dead.I"m sorry my poor english ,but I hope you could understand.
I am doing this project to make a traditional japanese costume for a play. Now to make a fan, buy an umbrella, and find good hair styles, and shoes! 'sigh'

If you make it for a girl size 12 what would measurements be, I understand waist would be wider and longer length. What about sleeves, and change there? I love all your videos all very well explained. Thank you.
Thank you but please let me explain. I did not know what the right over the left meant at the time. As I film sometimes I get it backward trying to show the viewer the right way. But it was nice of you to care, thank you!

Thank you and yes I know about the sleeves, however I only have so much time on the videos;)Thank you for letting other know:)
Ooh, I like that idea!

I have just done it for my daughter and it turned out amazing!!! Thank you SO much!!!!!

Love every one of your videos. I've been looking for a simple Kimono to make and will try this one! Thanks!
Another thing with the pattern you use for the kimono or yukata is that it should mimic the season or event you want to wear it for. For example you’d wear flowers in spring as to not upstage the beauty of the flowers. Same with the other seasons.
I thanked you for your clear instruction. i shall try to make it.
FYI wrapping the left over the right side is done for funerals.
I know that know:) but boy I wish I knew that before! Thanks for letting me know and thanks for watching :)
I was looking for an easy Kimono pattern. Although this is for me and not a child, i will just adjust the sizing .
Thank you for sharing ! (:
Cheers
Love this... I don't have any kids but I'll take my own measurements and give it a try for ME........
I think that is a great idea :)
Could you plz share measurements for five feet tall female
Nice video btw, dear Laura
@@lilysleisure1918 did you ever get measurements for a five foot tall female? That's what I need!
It's so cute. I have a 2 years old son. That kimono it'll be perfect for him.
I have a 1 year old grandson:) however he is in size 2T already.
I think you could line it wth terry cloth to make a bathrobe. What do you think?
FYI, the right panel should be under the left!!! This is super important for kimono/yukata as they only dress the dead with the right panel on top of the left.

sorry I didn't know about the left and right until after, and thanks for the other info:)
Going to try this for my daughter's Japanese Celebration day.
Have fun:)
Muito lindo! Vou fazer pros meus filhos. Obrigada!

Thanks ....I just love to sew:)
Perfect!! You made it easy and great!
That is so cute! Can't wait to do one for my grand son.

I’m 13 and I’m trying to do this overnight for my project due tomorrow-
I have no experience in sewing-
i'm on the same situation

Thank you so much.. I've been looking for this..
Sleeves is 12x17in?
Well done👍🏼👍🏼
I loved this tutorial! I was thinking about sewing a kimono robe for my son, for xmas. Could you please tell me, what measurements should l take to make him one?
Thank you ☺️
Thank you very much. I sew same size kimono for my daughter
Thank again
Great video!
I was wondering what the back measurement would be. Is it just the shoulder to shoulder back measurement?
I would use the largest measurement, the hips or the shoulders:)
I am making one..thank you
Im going to scale this up for me. I hope the fabric i have in mind is large enough, otherwise it will be a short kimono jacket instead .
Sorry for my question, but is it the same for the "triangle" (3 inch + 10inch) for an adult or is that changing then?
really cute,,like it soo much,,,can u make tutorial how to make kimono for adult?
Let me see what I can do:)
thank u sooo much sis..^_^
I wish you would have shown how you sewed the sleeve. like i know you SAID how you did it, but just would have liked the visual.
Thanks for letting me know, I will keep it in mind:)
P
Can you please tell on which grain did you cut the collar?
Looks like a straight grain piece. I like to use a bias where there's any curve involved, but our teacher shows how to clip the curve to make it lie flat. (For me, less bother to use a bias piece, but that takes more fabric. . . )
So cute. I NEED to make one. :-)
hi Chris
Have fun:)
I know it’s been a while since you posted this. But I want to make this with my nana together for fun

I guess the white fabric is cut on the bias, isn't it?
Hi, thank you for this, Is the white band around the neck and collar bias binding?
No, but you can if you would like:) thanks for asking
wow that's printed 태권도!
Laura, this is a very good tutorial. I'd like to make an infant kimono. What should the size of the fabric pieces for an infant? Thank you.
I do not have the measurements for that size. Measure the child back and length and go from there. I would just make it 2" bigger than the baby's back. Hope this helps
Understood. Thx, Laura.
With kimono and yukata, the right side should be folded over the left. In Japan when people die, their kimono is left over the right.
I dont understand the measurements for the front and back. Please help. You said to make the back piece 14 inches wide and the front pieces 11 inches wide. The to cut 3 inches out of the collar. I understand you perfectly thank you! and thank you for letting me know, I had no idea..very interesting.
nice video :) thanks!

That's looks a bit more like a yukata no?

Thank you and I would just measure her or use a piece of her clothing to find out. I'm sorry I do not have those measurements
Thank you for this. I sew for dolls, and I have a commission that requires a kimono! I'm subscribing to you now :)
thanks for subscribing:)
Thank you so much.
What is your seam measurement?
I used 1/4"
Kimono always wraps left over right. To remember use this phrase "left over rice". 😋
Can you show us how to make medical scrubs please?
let me see what I can do:) thanks for asking
tank
gracias aunque no se ingles pude entender bien la hecha de este kimono gracias a su explicacion.
lo entendi a base de señas. millon gracias
great! I'm glad to hear that and thank you for watching
Thank yoi
hi can u plz tell the construction for a 5 year old girls kimono
This could very well fit. just measure her and see. If not only the body would need to be bigger:)
I’m trying to watch this video but get no audio. Not sure if it’s me or the video?
It might be coming from only one speaker :) sorry
着物の合わせが逆になってますね。亡くなった人に着せる時の合わせになってます。
you missed out closing the front sleeves.
How to make for a 10 year old?
the only difference would be the size for the body. Measure his/her body and add a few inches
Thank U so much
I want one too - sz 16
It would be made the same way:)
I'm sorry for your loss.
Thank you but please let me explain. I did not know what the right over the left meant at the time. As I film sometimes I get it backward trying to show the viewer the right way. But it was nice of you to care, thank you!
An easier way to remember is just by remembering what "y" looks like. If I have to remember "right over left", I'd get confused as well!
This isn't a kimono it's a yukata
well, how to bet that! Thank you for the correction. I just looked it up. I never knew there was a difference:) thanks:)
kimono means, " thing to wear", so it is a kimono but a diferent one, or a kind of kimono
orangebeanzzz or even yukata
Is not kimono is likely more bath rope.lady is not easy to sewing a real kimono
I AM a child.
