I don’t know how you can take a simple lesson that has been shown hundreds of times and make it fresh with lots ❤️of new info. Thx
Thank you Jane! 💕
Some people are amazing artists, and some are incredible teachers. Louise is meticulous in both💕! I can't tell you how nice it feels to finish an online tutorial successfully once in a while!
A beautiful compliment. Thank you very much Debra. 💕
I am so glad to find your videos. Thanks from S.Korea~♡♡
This is the best tutorial on a graded wash I've ever seen. Thank you so much Louise! 🙏😍
Thank you very much Carla.
Bonjour Madame, well I love your clear and soft voice and the experience on differents paper and conditions dry, wet, and if there is a slope or not, on the table. I appreciate also the writing resume at the end. Great, thanks
Lol the bloopers are fantastic!
“I hate rules”
Stares at camera
God you are a gift to humanity.
Lol......thank you! You made me chuckle. 😘
Your so funny with your outtakes, thanks for the lessons they make a big difference
I'm glad they are helpful. Thank you Dora.
Excellent video! I just started my watercolor journey this week and so far have only been practising how to do graded washes. Thank you for such clear instructions and demonstrations.
When you said something about looking at YOUR book, I got all excited that perhaps you had written a book. Enjoyed your comment on hating rules -- was lovely to see your lighter funny side. Your instruction is THE BEST. Your fans should be growing quickly and I'm sure they will. So perhaps a book is on the horizon :)
Thank you Mary 💕.
Been painting for about a year now, and for the past 2 days I have been really struggling to get a good gradient wash. The tutorial I followed said to wet your page first (as most do) but I either ended up with bands of colour or just a flat wash. So I decided to watch a simple tutorial and practice. Your different examples were really helpful and as you concluded, starting from a dry page gives the best results, for me anyway. Thank you!
Very helpful, slow and easy to understand thanks for beggner video
This is very detailed and straight fwd! Tq❤❤❤❤
You are a very good teacher Louise ! Thanks from France ;)
Thank you for this demo on different ways to paint a graded wash.
Good lesson. I liked your test of different papers of wet and dry. I agree I liked the first one. Glad you showed the difference.
Louise, you are a fabulous teacher! Wish I'd found your YT channel before I spent so many frustrating hours trying to learn washes on crappy paper with tiny brushes. Ah, well, now I know where I was going wrong. ;)
As always your tutorial demonstrates exactly how to get the desired results. Excellent thank you 😊
Thanks Julie. Hope it helps. 💕
I really like the simple painting application at the end. I think it's super helpful to have little exercises like that. I wonder could you do a tutorial on this same thing, graded washes, but within a drawn shape that you are trying to fill, instead of having tape or the paper's edge. It seems a bit harder when you can't just swipe all the way over across the area.
Thank you!!!!! This is exactly what I needed
So nicely explained 😊
As usual very thorough, thanks Louise.
I love your lessons they are so informative and easy to follow 💞 Thank you for taking the time to film and post them all.
Thanks Elizabeth. 💕
I totally agree the first one is the best (nicest)
Thank you!! You have a good eye. 💕
So relaxing to watch and listen to you.
Thanks for the tutorial!
Good tutorial. This is cool thing to try out myself in leisure. Thanks!
Love your explanations and examples, thank you!
Another great one for this beginner!
Thank-you very much Louise
Thank you for a beautifully taught watercolour lesson.
Thank you V. 💕
I really enjoyed your video and the use of the mop brush. I am trying to use my mop brushes more and this will be a very good practice technique for me. I also liked the way you used the divided palette dish to mix the color.
I loved it, at 5:49, when you segued into your playful quip about hating rules. Well done, and good for you for testing the rule out for yourself. By the way, I liked the hot-pressed result the best.
Thank you Elliria! 💕
You are just soooo good! I also love your bloopers at the end... :)
Thank you Patricia. 💕
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I really enjoy learning the skills from you. I have a little tip for painting wash. I hope you don’t mind I share it here. When the weather is hot or using hot pressed watercolour paper, it’s difficult to keep the area open. I found by using watercolour slow drying medium (it’s made by A J Ludlow) could keep the area open longer. It’s easy to use. I used the slow drying medium instead of water to the areas. It helped me to create even wash. I hope it could help more people to overcome the problem.
Such a good tip. Thank you very much!
I can't wait for the next one. Thanks!
Thank you! Coming up.
I'm always waiting for your new upload 😁 Thank you for sharing this 💚
That's good to know. Thank you!

Glad it was helpful! Thank you.
Thanks for great information. I’ll practice to get ready for your landscape tutorial on Patreon! Thanks for heads up!
Thank you Kimberly! I've got to practice myself 🥴! 💕
I liked #2 the best! You're such a good sub. Actually, they're all useful: I can see the makings of trees in numbers 3 and 4! Alizarin's my favorite (with indigo and raw umbers): I've tried something like this with different pigments (several brands) and find some "misbehaving" paints seem to play by rules of their own, too 😂 and not just the multi-pigment paints. Ie: potter's pink (Schminke brand). That one is lovely but seems to make up rules as it goes along! -and that's okay, too.
I least like flat washes with phthalos because they're so staining (and a famous yellow pigment I can't recall offhand, also Schminke though) that when doing the wash, one teensy driplet of water from a stubborn bristle of a size 12 brush will cause a super bloom! File that under #CarefulWithStainingPigments and #WhyILoveViridian 😂❤️
Very helpful thanks Louise!
My pleasure Jennifer. Thank you!
Me encanta!!Muchas gracias Louis,muy util tutoral!!👏👏😍
I have watched a million well okay I admit it's more like a million and a half graded wash videos and now I finally know how to make a perfect and a not perfect one. Thanks a tone! But what did Louise find at the end of the video? Maybe we'll find out next week...
I got it! She found the rule!
Lol.....I'm happy to have helped Suzanne. Thank you!💕
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Louise 🙏🏻 🕊 💕 xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo 😘
My pleasure Celeste. Thank you!
Love the blooper reel :-)
Thanks Don. I have to laugh or I'll cry. 🥴
@@LouiseDeMasi You make it look so easy,
Thanks for your great teaching skills . Your wash tutorials are the best I've seen. What mistakenly causes thin white lines to sometimes go across a wash esp. graded ones? I'm thinking it might have something to do with too much water in the brush going across and lifting all the paint on that line - esp. in the graded washes. Any advice appreciated! Thanks again so much for sharing your talent and in a way that all can understand and be motivated by.
I'm not sure Patty- I haven't noticed any white lines like that. Could it be the brush you are using? Maybe a softer or newer brush might help. 🤷🏼♀️
Thanks so much for responding - much appreciated. I look forward to your upcoming videos. @@LouiseDeMasi
Thanks, absolutely. brilliant
Can you recommend a book, maybe the one you referred to? Thx :)
This is the best gradated wash tutorial I have found, after watching over 20. Thank you.
One question: my top section gets diluted, and it’s hard for me to get it super intense / masse tone without getting it muddy. If I go back after the first wash, I always leave a line (even if the paint is damp). Is there a best approach?
Thank you! I'm glad it's useful to you. if you are using tube paints try squirting out some freshly squeezed pigment and mix some water with that rather than trying to re-wet pigment that has hardened on your palette. I find when I used fresh pigment I can get a deep colour more easily. It's best not to go back in and fuss with the wet wash if you can help it.

Well done my friend, l like it very much, you have new follower my friend...😊🖼👌🙂👏🖌
Louise Thank you for Sharing your Wonderful Art and Hard earned Skills. Might be a Silly Question but ,I am Starting from Square one and want to learn a Lot more about Watercolor, Do you have pay as you go lessons ? TY again for all you do .
Thank you! I have lessons on Skillshare and Patreon. I've put the links in the description.
Love your videos! They’re so helpfull. But I have a question, I tried the first example, and work with a big spalter brush (8 cm). But somehow I still see strokes in mijn paint. It’s like the paint dries so fast after the first stroke. Any advice? ❤❤
So I could put masking fluid on a drawing and then do that over it?
Very useful tutorial on the subject and an excellent demo.
But only before 14:35 when a quick practice started and it was too fast to be useful. Speeding up a recording in my opinion always ruins any painting demo.
Your video is blurry. I can't see what your doing.
Hi Kimm, It's not blurry. You may have the quality settings on the video set too low. Click on the little circular icon that looks like a gear on the bottom right of the video. You'll see a pop up menu appear. Go to 'Quality' and click on it. Then select 1080p. That should make it better for you.
Louise, you are thinner now
Yes! I am. I've been looking after myself. I've dropped a few.
Love all your videos and you, but today I’m just gonna throw this out there, but doesn’t her hair look stunning today....just saying
Blushing. Thank you Sandi. 😘
