This was a different subscriber review video because I wanted to go a bit deeper with only 3 homes. These 3 were interesting to me because I really wanted to try to understand the design style and function they were reaching for rather than just pointing out mistakes. Hope you like it! Also, apologies for the WALL of links in the description but I wanted to list everything I mentioned!
Hey sugar sweet, could you do a video on cat friendly furniture fabrics? I love my kitties but I have to face the truth. . . . They're animals! Lol Somedays they are the only souls that make me laugh. (One day I came home and the boy catwas wearing a McDonald's bag like it was a jumper. Ps. Normaly, I don't leave garbage around. But he really likes McD bags and . . . . he's charming.) I have double stick tape and am working on their training, but even good well trained cats can catch a claw occasionally. So, what advise you got?
Ahh, Nick Lewis! I love your suggestions (It's Ryan). Definitely will do a rug for the kitchen. And save up for wallpaper in the hallway. TY! I already have way more plants than was pictured, and will get more cool lamps. Love cool lamps. Cheers!
I LOVE that you featured Ryan's house! He bought that house from me - I had white walls, modest quiet design, even more art than he has (some of it mine - he has one of mine, too), very simple ceiling light fixtures, no stripes on the walls, no black doors (I think you should have commented on them!). The kitchen cabinets were framed in honey-colored wood with white panels on the doors before they went tomato red. I actually painted over a dark purple bedroom when I bought the house in 2009 - five layers to turn it white! (I also painted over a dark brown room - yukk! - and a lot of ugly tan walls, not to mention the front of the house which I turned from a nasty greenish tan to lovely dark blue.) Oh, but I did have a 19-foot wood kayak hanging from the ceiling in the hall downstairs which Ryan lacks - no place else to put it! Lucky it fit there, the house is 23 feet deep. I NEVER EVER would have done what he has, but it just delights me every time he puts more photos on fbook, it makes me laugh. I agree on the rug under the kitchen table, I think that would be a good addition. I don't like the black doors. They were white before, of course. Maybe the outside of each door should be the color of the room inside? That would be fun! Of course that wouldn't offer a logical option for the front and back doors, but it would work for the two upstairs rooms and the bathroom. Then keep the inside of each door white, so it's sort of the negative of the room? (if you know what I mean). I have no idea how he photographed the living room to make it look so large! It's a very small house, the living room is maybe 12 x 14. I opened up the window between the living room and kitchen which helped a lot, and put in lots more windows, which also helped a lot. It's a lovely little house, I'm really glad Ryan is enjoying it!
I've read the comments (It's Ryan). Wow, TY all. Really appreciate the suggestions, and the compliments. So, I've had some time to really reflect on Nick's advice. I've had an aversion to the "maximalist" label because in my mind it always meant clutter everywhere, and gallery walls with haphazard spacing and no flow. I try to keep an even spacing, never go above the door frames, etc. But the examples you shared... yes, that's the style I wish I could achieve. They aren't at all cluttered, at least in the way I understand/FEEL that term. So I'm embracing it. I'm a maximalist. :D I think I have the foundation/structure of those examples you shared but I can feel how I can introduce a few more things and really get it there. So excited to try some new things. Also, wow... I really love creative people like Nick who can tailor their feedback to another person's preferences. It's a reflection of someone, I think, with a lot of empathy and a kind soul. It's a skill I wish I was stronger in myself. Also, it might not be obvious, but I only bought this house in October and I watched HOURS of Nick, Paige Wassel, DIY with KB, Lone Fox, Julie Khuu, and Posh Pennies from about July through December of last year. There are SO many things I learned that I think really helped out my house. Especially how high to hang art, finishing touches (my kitchen backsplash is stick-on BTW, cheap, but I bought a nice finishing edge and it looks SO good!), etc. My fave lesson from Nick is taking the time to create a design you love while making it as timeless as you can with your preferences. He really gave me the confidence that I don't need to do white marble kitchen to be cool. I can do what I want, and make some compromises to introduce natural materials or whatever else, to make it work for years. So cheers!
Ryan: Paints entire house in drag and makes it cohesive and relatable. Me [literally this weekend]: I wonder if it will be too much if I paint this toothbrush holder blue. No joke. 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
Ryan's "colorful cacophony" style is refreshing! And the tangerine dinette shouldn't work, but it really does in his space. Sophistication meets childish wonder.
It really is super cool. Soooo far from my style, and I was surprised at how much I loved it. The color scheme with the kitchen and living room is so well balanced and cohesive without being matchy and that purple against the honey shade wood floor is so warm and gorgeous!
I LOVE the way you "Roast" these viewers. Rather than criticizing them for not mirroring your style, you looked for who the viewer is in the space and made suggestions that would help them embrace their own style. I could watch these all day.
Regarding Shauna's kitchen: I'm a mom and when my son was little, I would actually mat and frame my favorites among his school artwork -- and then hang them next to the breakfast table in a gallery arrangement. Just clearing the clutter off that refrigerator would make a huge difference, and as you mentioned, purchasing a cabinet or storage unit with doors to hide all of the other clutter. Great video!
I love the purple room! It's so beautifully done. In a world where people are going for all white kitchen *yawn* and TOM FORD and Chanel coffee table books, Ryan's decor is just what we made to bring back character in the world of Interior decor. Love his style!
Ryan, whomever/wherever you are, I love your colors!!! I especially love all the green and purple. I also love the colored walls paired with the natural wood tones in the floors, etc. I agree that you could go a bigger with artwork, and go ever bolder with some patterns that Nick suggested. Also, I appreciate Nick's designer suggestion, Jon Adler. Thanks, Nick.
Christine, thank my mom for those great wood floors! Ryan bought the house from me (it was quite discrete when I had it!). My mom contributed the floors as a house-warming gift to me. Thanks, mom!
I love Ryan’s style! Looking out the windows, you can see the colourful houses for which St. John’s, NL is known. The use of bold colour is so important in a part of the world with long, dark, stormy winters. So Ryan’s use of colour is both cheerful and culturally appropriate. I agree about putting a patterned rug under the dining table. Otherwise, I wouldn’t change a thing.
Though the three houses that you see out the window - orange, green, and lavender - are all newly painted that way. Until around 2012 the orange and green ones were abandoned. The orange one was renovated, what's now the green one was completely removed (it was all burnt inside) and that is a totally new structure. The colorful houses are actually part of fairly recent gentrification, it is not traditional.
@@joyhecht But it’s traditional to have brightly painted houses is it not? I think that’s the point that was being made - he’s following the colourful traditions of Newfoundland and more power to him.
@@sheilaenglish3293 No, it isn't. It's gentrification, started in the 1970s or 80s. The folks who were there before then kind of laugh at the notion that this is traditional!
I love this series! It’s one thing to see concept rooms set up by professionals with none of the little things that people have in each room, and then it’s an entirely different thing to see your ideas applied to lived-laughed-loved in rooms!
"Who's your landlord? Can you get them to call me?" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Sassy Nick is my favourite Nick. Also, let's appreciate Nick's open-mindedness where DIY fixes are concerned in this one. I appreciate this growth.
If Shauna's willing to do the work, maybe she can work out a deal with the landlord to reface the cabinets or make other cosmetic changes. Maybe she can get the landlord to pay for the materials or knock down the rent until Shauna recoups her costs. (Caveat: Get it in writing!) If Shauna's going to be there short term, she can sell the idea to the landlord by pointing out that he/she charge the next tenant a higher rent.
Hey Nick-Great series. For Shauna’s kitchen, I would first focus on just doing the contact paper on the upper cabinets. That would do so much to relieve the heaviness, and is a very achievable goal. That may be all that is needed. Besides, contrasting upper and lower cabinets are all the rage! Also, the door on your fridge is reversible. The kitchen would work so much better for you if you made the door open in the other direction . It is a relatively easy DIY task , and will change your life. Trust me on this.
Excellent advice. Just doing all the upper cabinets would relieve the heaviness, & a lot of the busyness at eye level. I have another suggestion for the refrigerator...if the clutter is contained it would make a huge difference. That's what I did. A command center on the (unseen from the center of the room) side of the fridge could have shopping list, ink pens, etc in a magnetized organizer. You can pick up one at a dollar store & glue magnets on the back, or even buy one that's already magnetized for very little money. For photos/postcards that you really want to display, you can get a light-weight picture frame, glue magnets on the back, put it on the fridge & corral that stuff inside the frame. Or if glass makes you nervous you can find one with plexiglass, or get a sheet of plexiglass from the hardware store. Or remove the glass & backing entirely & just stick the frame on the fridge. This way you don't have little stuff all over the fridge; just one frame with stuff inside it. (I did that because my husband apparently cannot live without family pictures on the front of the fridge...and I cannot live with visual clutter, so I came up with a compromise.)
Shauna, May I suggest 3 large bulletin boards. Paint fames in neutral color. Use them in horizontal line and put child’s art and things cleared from frig.
I would ask the landlord if she is allowed to paint the cabinets. It would be an improvement for future tenants as well. The paint might be neater and cheaper. She could also ask if she is allowed to replace the counter top on her own cost. Depending on how long she plans to stay it wouldn't break the bank.
I like how you incorporated a renter. I’d love to see a series for renters. I’d submit to this but I have limitations on a lot of suggestions like paint, lighting, cabinets, etc.
Hey Nick! Thanks for featuring my space! You pronounced "braai" perfectly :) Though if I were Afrikaans, the "r" would be rolled a bit more. When speaking English though, you nailed it. You're correct, I need to define the space before deciding anything else. We do have another living room with a Tv, etc, so we dont necessarily need another, but when we have guests, this is generally the space to hang out, as it's larger. I'll lean into the games room plan, and start going from there. We also have twin newborns, so its temporarily become a space to lay out play mats etc.
You have to update us! One question I don't know if you can answer, but might as well try... I've watched a lot of house flipping videos from SA, oddly. Like 99% of houses have floor tiles the same size as yours. Those are, in my experience, rare in North America. Why are they that size so commonly in SA? Is it something to do with the climate or something?
@@SignalHillHiker Nah, dont think its anything to do with climate, it's just the current trend. The trend a few years ago was much smaller tiles (200mm x 200mm or 300mm x 300mm), but lately the modern trend are tiles in a much larger format, being 600mm x 600mm (like mine in the pics). I recently renovated the bathrooms and used this size, as well as some double sized (1200mm x 600mm) which look great. Just seems to be the modern size here, I didnt actually know it was unique?
@@luke2956 I don't know if it's unique - there could be people from 100 countries reply to us and say "Same here!" - but for me, personally, it's not common where I am (St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada) and I've only seen it on YT vids of SA houses. So that's my current assumption. More than willing to be corrected haha. :D Either way, awesome space. Make sure you update us when you've done what you're going to do! :D
I was so impressed that he pronounced 'braai' correctly! An indoor braai is great for when it rains and you just need to braai on a Saturday or for the rugby. Glad a South Africans space made it to the channel! 🇿🇦
@@luke2956 Same in Germany ;-) - the formats are getting larger and larger., because everyone hates those gaps (and cleaning them). Hence a lot of folks are going for waxed or polished concrete floors (at least if you can afford it, because those are expensive).
the string light critique “I think its disappointed at itself” was the piece de resistance! you are so funny and yet so real and kind… I love your design dispatches so much and look forward to them every week! 🖤🖤
Fridge: A rotating gallery. Kid's art one at a time and rotate them though. Have kids help you decide every Tuesday (or whatever) which item should be on display. If you want to get super-fancy, there are magnetic frames you can use (or make, in different lengths). But it also gets kids involved in curation, which is a cool thing to learn, and to be able to talk about and appreciate what they have created even more than just a display.
Nick's suggestions are always spot on and so helpful but I'm going to dissent and say that Shauna should just lean into the whole retro 70s vibe. Unless you really hate that 70s look (no, I get it) I think it can be really fun to play it up PLUS the 70s are on trend rn. Totally agree with decluttering the space and getting rid of the battery-operated string lights. But what if you painted the entire kitchen a sandy peach color, one that is a little toned down from that accent wall. Add some plants (in macrame hangers, of course!) and retro dishes and mugs (either groovy daisies or speckled earthenware for a more natural look). Maybe some patterned curtains. Add a floor lamp and 1970s movie/art poster against that accent wall? Vogue even has an article posted online this year called "Why 1970s Interior Design Is Trending Again" so there's probably lots of inspiration out there (Pinterest for example).
@meowy totally agree - this stuff is cool, it just needs aggressive decluttering, cleaning and any needed repairs. I could actually imagine Jonathan Adler riffing on this cabinet design and the floor too!
I love the first guys home. So refreshing than playing it safe with white. It almost has an eclectic feel. I'm old enough to remember when every room had it's own colour .
HEY RYAN!! The green living room with green curtains: they blend in a bit. Get a different color of curtains, or patterned ones! HEY SHAUNA!! The countertop will be fine once the cabinets are handled. All that brown is fighting all the other brown, but a lone brown feature can express itself without a fight.
I love how the orangish red color of Ryan’s room is complimentary to the specific green he choose ( the colors shades are directly across from one another on the color wheel). It makes for a very successful and dynamic space. So fun!
Dear Nick, I really love it when you are honest - but you are still very gentle with your subscribers. Love your talent for interior design, too. Keep doing this great stuff!
I LOVE Ryan's home. When my kids moved out we bought a (not) new home. I wanted to keep my kids spirit with me so I painted different rooms in their favorite colors. I have a guest room in pink walls and another in yellow walls (my girls). The room I read in will be painted green and a bathroom will be orange (my sons). My family think I am crazy but hey you only live once!!
So I just turned to the furniture in my dining room and said "you're disappointed in yourself, aren't you..." I felt that the chairs took it really personally. SO awkward....
Shauna needs to think big. Take out all of the small items, art, gadgets and declutter relentlessly. Ask your landlord if you can paint the cabinets. You can’t ruin them at this point.
Coordinating teal/ terracotta sculpture , lit in the glass shelves would help. Clear the clutter definitely..Washable rugs to again cover parts of floor ..
Agree with the paint. Many landlords will let you paint because they are going to have to paint it again when you move out. All white cabinet fronts will look much better and will coordinate with the backsplash.
Agree with everything in this comment and the replies, and will add this: For the love that all that is holy, reverse the swing of the refrigerator door! It’s an easy and quick thing to do, and improves the work triangle. And if I had artistic kids, I’d frame their artwork and replace the “gallery wall” frame.
@@florencecousin5577 - yes - also, she has room for an island...and if her budget allows for it, in addition to painting the cabinet doors, I would recommend putting in a large area rug (just one color) to help calm the flooring pattern down.
My landlord would not let me paint my 1960-70's kitchen cabinets. I did cover the top cabinets with white contact paper. I added peel and stick handles to them.. the darn things didn't even have pulls. Some landlords will not let you touch certain things and with today's market for rentals you don't want to pi$$ off your landlord.
Ryan lives in St.John’s which is Canada’s 🇨🇦 most colourful city (Jellybean Row) NFLD is loved for its boldly painted houses. So happy Nick encouraged him to lean even more into the maximalist style and also provided links to shops!! ❤️
I'm a boring, neutral, white walls kind of gal, but I really liked Ryan's space. So much personality and fun! Nick, I enjoyed hearing your great advice for everyone's spaces.
Ryan, I love love love your taste, specially because St-John's is so rainy and grey. Your style matches so well with the jelly bean colours all over town. Your place screams energy and joy! Loves Nick's recommendations! By the way I live in the Canada's sunniest city (Medicine Hat, Alberta), and you live in the rainiest place -- I do believe the weather can sometimes inspire our palette of colours and therefore influence positively our mood.
I absolutely adore Ryan’s spaces and Nick’s suggestions to go even more bold and creative! I love color! Sadly for me however, I know I need a much more restful and less stimulating space, more zen and spa-like. I don’t have all white gray and beige though but rather nature inspired calm blues and greens. Great advice Nick!!
Nick to Shawna... " I think it looks disappointed in itself" .. what a sweet way to put it.😏 Across the board... really good advice. The kitchen just needs a place for the eyes to rest.
Yay!! Love this series! I know you call it roasting but I honestly think this is super helpful for those who submitted and us watching. We all need our boundaries pushed a bit, even if we love as much color as Ryan, and you’re the perfect person to do that! I will say that I think Ryan is missing out a bit in the purple bedroom when it comes to the bedding. I feel like he could really jazz it up with a fun bold pattern that compliments the wall color more. But I loved his space regardless!
I love Ryan’s bold color choices! I personally can’t live with that many bold colors but really appreciate those who can and do! Also, I love the fact that Nick’s clock is roughly the same time in every video I’ve seen. :)
Ryan! I love your colorful, streamline style. It's vibrant and fun without being overwhelming. Mt first reaction to seeing images if your home was a sigh of relief after stepping into an oasis. Thanks for sharing pics.
Ryan - like you I adore colour in rooms, but I always felt the ceiling painted white let me down, so when I had my rhubarb and custard (bright yellow and fushia) bedroom repainted I had the paint for the ceiling mixed the same shade by many tones lighter, The result is spectacular.
Such gentle "roasts" - you are very gentle and kind! Thanks for this video - I loved the wild, colourful, mid-century modern meets whatever - your advice to go further was outrageous and right-on!
I love ryan's color palette! Wonderful implentation of the cat towers colorwise. If the top parts of the cat towers not overly padded you could DIY use colorful rugs to change the tops or even integrate colorful padding to it! Cats love fluff! My idea for shauna is if she loves that gallery wall idea, why not put a few of the childs drawing into seperat picture frames with the normal photos and put that on the wall?
Love these reviews! Ryan inspired me, but I am not as brave as he is. Love love love my Ruggable carpets! I have dogs and I enjoy changing the look of my rooms so easily!
@@Nick_Lewis colours are not dangerous. express your personality. invest in good furniture and have fun with the wall and accessories. I dont believe so many people are that timid or cold.
I loved Ryan’s courageous colour use. I’m a colour addict myself. Your advice was spot on in my opinion. For Shauna’s kitchen I would just contact paper the upper units and leave the more durable original surface on the lower ones. Ikea used to make some backsplash panels with tracks just for the purpose of hiding poorly chosen tiles like these.
My daughter (not 14 lol) has a set of lights in a small nook area in her bedroom and it totally works! She has some art on the wall, a comfy chair and throw blanket on it. Its by the window and her voluptuous black cat is the perfect contrast sitting on the chair. You can make almost anything work if you style it right. Placement makes a huge difference too.
This series is turning out to be my favourite, Nick. I love all your videos, but I really like your respectful yet straightforward and hilarious approach in these gentle roasts.
Ryan’s home is joyful! If you’ve ever been to Newfoundland, you’ll know his home fits right in! We have lots of colour in our home, two green bedrooms, two yellow, a grey/green living and dining room, a plum colour in the hall, and a navy and white kitchen. Oh, and an olive den! Sounds too much, but the shades flow together, and are anchored by crisp off white/cream woodwork throughout the house. I hate beige!
For Shauna I would suggest she talk to her landlord about painting the cabinets. Some landlords are happy to let you upgrade the space with simple things like paint.
Hello, This is Shauna here. Thank you Nick for all of your suggestions! ♥️ You made me laugh and reflect. So far, I have removed all of the artwork off the lower half of the fridge and covered up the blue tile under the glass cabinet. Unfortunately, I cannot paint as a renter… Edit: I ended up using plain white stick-on subway tiles instead of contact paper to hide the backsplash. The contact paper looked a little cheap unfortunately. P.S. The floor is actually real stone! I don’t hate it, I just don’t think all of the contrasting tile works together. It’s a work-in-progress… Also, a reminder: please be kind in your comments. Remember- this is a real person’s home.
@@chandaharkins4418 yep I don’t hate it- although it gets very cold in the winter and looks a little worn. It’s more that the various styles and colours become a bit overwhelming. I think the floor might work better if the other elements were toned down.
I really like the cabinets you covered in contact paper. If you find the will to go on, I think you could lean into a ‘Parian Apartment’ vibe with add on moldings. ‘Pretty in the Pines’ has done a lot with those. (RUclips channel). I loved the floor! So unexpected!
Oh! And I meant to suggest you could do a vinyl ‘rug’ on the floor if you wanted to layer on something tamer, or more classic. Sometimes things read as too much, because you still need another element or two to tie things together. So there is grey & black in the stone so you could look at a classic checkerboard in grey & black. And then use those grey & black shades in art on your lovely peachy-clay wall. Like take some of your favorite photos & have large black & white poster size prints made. Just ideas I had while nick was talking.
really fun video. my taste in home decor paint is more subtle but I actually adore Ryan's colorful home. such a refreshing change from neutrals and subtlety. bold bright and beautiful. I agree with you. more pattern and texture. wallpaper. rugs. I think Ryan is on the verge of a really stunning home. just a little more and it's there. love it! glad you pointed out a channel with renter friendly tips. I think the white contact paper does make the cabinets look better but might not really be renter friendly as I feel it might peel the paint off or leave residue when removing. peel and stick wallpaper would be a better option and does come in solid colors including white. use peel and stick tile for the backsplash. yes, less clutter. omg the entertaining/party space is making me jealous. what a great space for fun. keep the pool table. set it up for games. get an outdoor dining table and chairs and maybe even outdoor sofa and you have the perfect recipe for indoor outdoor parties. and yes make the bar area shine. oh the parties I will miss.
I LOVE where his bright colours have gone, Incredible job. That teal pain with orange chairs. YES getbthose cool patyerns and prints and wall papars going... um wow love it. Add some 70s brass and gold 100%
"This is NOT sage green Benjamin Moore's color of the year" LOL. Love the advice and encouragement you're giving Ryan here. Though far from my own style & pallette I feel your ideas for Ryan are Right On. Though I would not necessarily like to live in Ryan's world it would sure be a hoot to visit from time to time. 😉
Hey Ryan, I love all the colors. I did my house in a similar manner. Every room with a bright bold color, white trim, and wood floors. I love it. I personally don't add a lot of pattern to mine because it gets too busy in my opinion. I always love it when I see people use color, white is so boring. and I don't think color equals maximalism.
I absolutely love Ryan's 'mid century drag' home, & the examples for suggestions you gave. I get the idea that he's someone with a really fun, unique personality based on the colors & decor he chose.
I painted a tiny half windowless BR a superdark Custom hi-gloss purple, including the ceiling....then lined around the ceiling with tiny fairy lights. Everything else was bright white. There was a huge mirror over the vanity, which reflected a very large framed painting with deep and muted greys, browns, pinks and green. The effect, with the door closed was magical. Friends would stay in for long periods, and come out a little stunned. 😆 It was beautiful, and I miss it.
Ryan has a really fun style. He has a great color sense. I agree with everything you suggested Nick. Shawna could ask her landlord about painting the cabinet fronts, too. Another thing she could do is peel and stick for the backsplash. I like her floor too. I don’t like the curtains being pulled back like that. It looks dated. They should hang straight, or get a fabric Roman shade or reeded roller shade. The color of the table might be fighting with the floor. She could paint it. Agree about the clutter, including on the glass shelves. For Luke, instead of the sofas, maybe four upholstered comfy chairs around a round coffee table for conversation, drinks and games?
I love Ryan’s style ❤️❤️ what a fabulous home you have. Agree with Nick about putting bold wallpaper on the stairs. Keep going Ryan, you’re doing a great job. Have you ever considered being a stylist?
@3:17, is that a crocheted ceiling? 😂 @4:02, absolutely love all those colours. I want to use orange for a custom cabinet I will someday have built (shortage of materials and cost of labour).
I love, love, love Ryan’s style! I have some bold colorful walls too, so Ryan’s space feels just right to me (even the cat trees - I have 5 cats myself).
I totally agree with Nick on Ryan’s space. A colorful wall pulses with energy, and large-scale art & furnishings can balance that energy. It’s a great way to play with perspective. Love those Adler Ruggables btw, the bigger the better :).
I think if Shauna makes the cabinets one color, and covers the backsplash with a more harmonious color, that countertop might work with the floor. They both seem like they're 'stone' oriented and their colors go together. And then deal with some clutter. I'm a renter, too, I know that's hard. In my kitchen, the lower cabinet's opening is only 8" wide! (Even though it's about 3 feet deep. 🙄) I can't fit my cast iron pots in it and I'm certainly not putting them up high. I had to get a pyramidal pot rack that stands in a corner. Except for my pantry, almost nothing is able to be stored in a logical place. There's not much counter space, either, which is another challenge for Shauna.
On Luke's addition - I'm thinking the cover for the pool table is not only to protect it, but to also provide a work surface for the indoor brazier. So I would suggest removing the sofas from the room entirely, move the pool/billiard table to where the sofas currently are. Next, put a smaller or even a portable folding table (or rolling cart) adjacent to the brazier for use as a work surface. Your idea, Nick, for small cocktail tables and chairs around the space is excellent, I think, they would fit the bill for entertaining in that space. I'm not a decorator or design person, my focus tends to be on function. Just love your videos Nick! Thank you for all of your time and effort to produce them😊
Love this series! It'd be fun, if possible, to see some of these 'gentle roast' spaces again and see if and how participants have changed the space based on your comments.
For Shauna's space, I think customizing (pintrest etc has a lot of great ideas!)an IVAR cabinet/shelf from ikea could be a cute way (and economical!) to go for the microwave and other appliance storage. I would place the cabinet right up against where the wall comes out slightly, and that way you could leave the microwave on top where it's easily accessible. For lighting to the left of the garage(?) door, I would get a plug in wall sconce or a plug in light that hangs from the ceiling (if you're scared of holes, I think command makes some ceiling hooks). You can paintable wall cord covers from amazon to (somewhat) hide the cord. I would also get a thin sideboard for the right side of the door for extra storage, you could use it for some pantry items which might free up cabinet space for larger appliances. If a plug is near I'd put a little lamp on it, and decorate the space above it with the gallery wall, like Nick suggested. Maybe, even place a memo board in the center of the gallery wall to pin/clip chidrens artwork on. Again, I actually think ikea is a great place to go for cheap frames.
I bought a cat shelf that suctions to the window which I love because it’s so streamline and doesn’t take over the design of the room. One of the best things I’ve bought for my home!
I actually love Ryan's place. I could personally not live with those bright colors (I just need more calm for my personality).... but, go Ryan! very very fun.
I love Ryan's home! I'd like to paint my bedroom purple too. I think he chose a beautiful shade. I'd have to use a lighter shade I think, my bedroom is pretty small. Plus I need a shade my husband likes too. Great video!
Hi! For Ryan, I think some patterns like the ones from Matthew Williamson would look stunning in your house. I personally love the botanicals from him, but he has some lovely peacock inspired ones that I think you would like. Love your jewel toned walls!
While cat furniture is a necessity, it can be made so much more attractive than your basic carpet-and-sisal-covered cardboard-tube cat tree. Houses used to have picture rail molding running all the way around the living room. Why not get some really beautiful shelving material (e.g. stained & sealed natural wood) and run it all the way around the room about 12 to 24 inches from the ceiling? Provide a few creative ways for kitties to get up to the cat walk (ahem!) and back down again. Cover at least part of the shelf top with carpet strips or secure woven sisal strips. Scatter a little catnip on the carpets and mats. Cats need to get up high, stretch, and sharpen their claws. But these functions can be beautiful additions to the room.
I loved Ryan's Green room with orange kitchen juxtaposed. It's amazing! I agree that it would look even better with more pattern thrown in to break up just blocks of colour.
Wish I had Ryan’s boldness with color!👏🏻 You are a class act Nick!👍🏻 Subtle and humorous and very helpful. Getting a sense of someone’s style then elevating it is what makes this so educational and fun to watch. 💜
19:38 it's crazy to think how differently we design our homes around the world. Where I live we would call that room the Quincho (a really really big one) and have the indoor barbecue occupying half the wall.
Fridge magnet hack!! If you like magnets or art on your fridge (especially if you're worried about scratching the fridge) and it feels cluttered--those square whiteboards with magnetic backs that are meant for like, college students are amazing You can put any amount of them on the fridge and it color blocks everything on that surface into a sense of belonging instead of being stranded at sea across the surface of the fridge And if you have multiple kids, or a bunch of magnets and then a few things you like to have up, you can dedicate one whiteboard square to each thing; the magnets still stick to it, you can also use it as a whiteboard if you want, and if it is the case of using for kids then each kid gets their own zone they can customize or just know is dedicated to them
I like how you acknowledge other people's personality and consider them and also their circumstances when giving tips, instead of being "do what *I* want you to do"
A fun way to display children’s art that will make them feel special and will make the home feel less cluttered than hanging it on the fridge is to buy “pocket frames” and hang three or four in your kitchen or another high traffic area of the home. They have a hinge and a pocket behind the glass so you can change out the image in seconds and it’s also storage for the enormous body of work that children sometimes produce!
Shauna's kitchen - with the green backsplash and the upper cupboard piece that is done in white gives me the impression these are 'trials' for where she would like to go. If that is the case, I have some thoughts. The backsplash is just fine, no need to axe it. White cupboards with accents to match the green backsplash throughout the kitchen would tie everything together; ie: curtains (sheers if you are into them), sm appliances, flecks in a new counter top, etc. Love the flooring but only if it is still in good condition. I love all of the treasures on the fridge but maybe move them into a Gallery Feature on the wall with the cramped one. Just space out the cramped one. No need to remove it. And definitely a closed in cupboard/cabinet to replace the open shelving against the Gallery Wall. It would be a handy place to hide some of the extras on the countertop. The string of lights really "do not look happy there". I don''t like peach on a wall so I will not say anymore about it. Shauna, I am jealous of the shear size of your kitchen.
Spot on pronunciation of braai. Well done! Great tips too... our braai rooms are mostly underwhelming in the 'decor' department. Kudos to Luke for even attempting some semblance of style.
@@SignalHillHiker Ryan! People love your home! Myself Included!
@@joyhecht Oh wow we are getting the whole history of this place I love it!
So cheers!
I love your style
I agree. Great style Ryan. Yummy colors too. A very happy home.
I really love your style Ryan! Such a cute house and it gives out such happy vibes. Would love to see what else you do with it! :-)
Great job Ryan! Love the house :)
I love that backsplash!
I would like to see a "where are they now" episode where the people who submitted their homes take Nick's advice and update us!

Ryan has a gift for color. Not my style but I’m in awe.

Agreed 😅
That purple is fabulous!!

@@alessazoe Exactly!
This!!!! I absolutely agree with you. Taking the time to elevate your own style! Love you Nick you are awesome!
I was also going to suggest the mat and frame! (And ugh, sorry that the scam accounts hit your comment too 😩)
I love the purple room!
Same! Ryan needs to do an “In Drag” movement. It could apply to everything 🤩 I love it
Christine, thank my mom for those great wood floors! Ryan bought the house from me (it was quite discrete when I had it!). My mom contributed the floors as a house-warming gift to me. Thanks, mom!
Thanks, Christine!
@@joyhecht Well,the 1970s were 50 years ago! Long enough for a tradition, I’d say!
I love this series! It’s one thing to see concept rooms set up by professionals with none of the little things that people have in each room, and then it’s an entirely different thing to see your ideas applied to lived-laughed-loved in rooms!
A++ for the Live-Laugh-Love reference!
A lot of those professional designer spaces inspire more die cry hate in me than anything else.
"Who's your landlord? Can you get them to call me?" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Sassy Nick is my favourite Nick. Also, let's appreciate Nick's open-mindedness where DIY fixes are concerned in this one. I appreciate this growth.
I was writing this above when I though I know someone has already said this! I actually laughed out loud at this comment 😂
To be clear, I still hate DIY for ME. 😂
@@Nick_Lewis You were very diplomatic about it and we love that. 🤣🤣🤣
@@SarahRenz59 Or not raise the rent. 😉😇
Good eye on the fridge handle!!!
@@JamieM470 i was thinking swapping out the photo collage with framed pieces of the kids' art.
I like how you incorporated a renter. I’d love to see a series for renters. I’d submit to this but I have limitations on a lot of suggestions like paint, lighting, cabinets, etc.
Based on his design flair, Ryan is the kind of friend we ALL need!!! Daring, bold, colorful and FUN!!!
@@luke2956
Same in Germany ;-) - the formats are getting larger and larger., because everyone hates those gaps (and cleaning them). Hence a lot of folks are going for waxed or polished concrete floors (at least if you can afford it, because those are expensive).
Gem of many: hanging light fixture is “ disappointed in itself”.🤣
Yes! I lol'd at the "Who's your landlord, I have questions".
The more I looked at Ryan’s home, the more I loved it.
He went for it & it works👏
the string light critique “I think its disappointed at itself” was the piece de resistance! you are so funny and yet so real and kind… I love your design dispatches so much and look forward to them every week! 🖤🖤
GO, RYAN! Nick gets you, and so do I! Thanks for giving me the name of my style, "Midcentury in Drag."
That Ryan (first, very colored pieces) has so many plants *AND* cats is a miracle in itself. Respect.
Plus I love all of your suggestions 💛

I love Ryan's space! I have a few friends who are equally as colourful in their design choices and they are all artistic.
This “telegram”scammer is posting here now....seems to be doing it on a lot of RUclips channels.😡

For Shauna I would suggest she talk to her landlord about painting the cabinets. Some landlords are happy to let you upgrade the space with simple things like paint.
Free labour because hopefully since you live there you will do a good job, and I then you get a rent increase due to improvements 😡
Hello,
This is Shauna here. Thank you Nick for all of your suggestions! ♥️ You made me laugh and reflect.
So far, I have removed all of the artwork off the lower half of the fridge and covered up the blue tile under the glass cabinet. Unfortunately, I cannot paint as a renter…
Edit: I ended up using plain white stick-on subway tiles instead of contact paper to hide the backsplash.
Knowing that your floor is real stone actually makes it really cool in my opinion - mid century vibes that you could play up.

Though far from my own style & pallette I feel your ideas for Ryan are Right On. Though I would not necessarily like to live in Ryan's world it would sure be a hoot to visit from time to time. 😉
I love the colorful house…it’s bold, but clean and I love the use of plants for a natural element. Mid century drag…genius!
I love Ryan's space!!!!!! That purple is so glorious.
I was afraid nick would say tone down the color I was so relieved when he suggested more color for Ryan
I think you're right! Ryan needs more elements and layers of colour to balance out the look and blend the mid century modern with drag.
When I was renting I had the same kind of cabinets - I asked my landlord if I could paint them and he let me. It transformed the kitchen. Good luck.
Mid Century Drag. HAHA I want to go for a drink with Ryan
Those 1970s kitchen cupboards are GORGEOUS just de-clutter and clean the kitchen and add awesome retro accessories and plants it will be beautiful
Thank you for all of your time and effort to produce them😊
I love Ryan's place as I am a color lover myself. More art , more prints and more plants please.
Love this series! It'd be fun, if possible, to see some of these 'gentle roast' spaces again and see if and how participants have changed the space based on your comments.
Yes, definitely
Great idea!
Ryan's place is amazing. That purple in the bedroom? Stunning.
I love Ryan's home! I'd like to paint my bedroom purple too. I think he chose a beautiful shade. I'd have to use a lighter shade I think, my bedroom is pretty small. Plus I need a shade my husband likes too. Great video!
9:31. I like that! Put Mom and Dad in the middle and family around it. It is close representing close family love.
Glad you mentioned Ruggable. We have five of their area rugs, and they are low profile, easy to clean and so durable.
Oh my goodness, Ryan's home is GORGEOUS!! I feel so inspired!!
Fridge magnet hack!!
If you like magnets or art on your fridge (especially if you're worried about scratching the fridge) and it feels cluttered--those square whiteboards with magnetic backs that are meant for like, college students are amazing
You can put any amount of them on the fridge and it color blocks everything on that surface into a sense of belonging instead of being stranded at sea across the surface of the fridge
And if you have multiple kids, or a bunch of magnets and then a few things you like to have up, you can dedicate one whiteboard square to each thing; the magnets still stick to it, you can also use it as a whiteboard if you want, and if it is the case of using for kids then each kid gets their own zone they can customize or just know is dedicated to them
I like how you acknowledge other people's personality and consider them and also their circumstances when giving tips, instead of being "do what *I* want you to do"
Genuinely love the combination of the blue-green room next to the orange of the kitchen. It’s beautiful!
Go Ryan!! Nick's right about patterns, that's what's missing but I'm so impressed with your home💙 omgosh, that bathroom..love love love💗
LOVED the style of this video! The in-depth method on fewer spaces is really working for me!
Spot on pronunciation of braai. Well done!
Great tips too... our braai rooms are mostly underwhelming in the 'decor' department. Kudos to Luke for even attempting some semblance of style.
Well, when I heard him say “roast”, I wasn’t expecting such constructive and personalised feedback. So refreshing. Subscribed.
You are hysterical AND spot on when it comes to your critique! You always make me smile.
Love watching your vlogs.Thanks!
For Shauna’s kitchen, could a renter friendly, quiet roll and stick wallpaper also work for the cabinets?
