Shooting a motionless target at ~40 yards down at the range with a handgun is pretty hard already, imagine doing that when someone’s openly shooting everyone with an AR, moving all over, while you fear for your life and everybody else’s, having to manage all that dose of stress and adrenaline combined. This guy deserves a medal.
I have been in this scenario. Fear is not present at all. You're body goes into either fight or flight. Some of us automatically home in and everything else is irrelevant. I cannot explain it but you're brain becomes on a mission. It's like breathing without knowing.

10 shots in 15 seconds on a moving target at 40 yards and apparently he hit 8 out of 10, heroic actions from this 22 year old who has impressive marksmanship and massive balls!
Yep. Seriously massive. Going up against someone who has a rifle when you only have a pistol in a size suitable for carry is usually a losing proposition.
That may be so but it seemed like he had the drop on the shooter, most opportunities of law enforcement dont really get those times since they bring attention to themselves to direct the fire at them. Shooter just didn't expect people would have a gun in the *UNITED STATES* apparently
A lot of people don’t realize that. Pistol vs rifle takes a lot of balls. Generally the idea of rushing someone shooting isn’t a great idea. Much less knowingly being out gunned.

And none of your military experience LED you to the conclusion that the food court isn't even 40 yards across? 😆 The dude was sitting in the middle of the food court next to the pillar directly outside the bathrooms of which he shot the guy from 40 ft away. He then called the people out of the bathroom because he was directly in front of the bathroom and only 40 ft away. He was sitting in the food court and eating.. people seriously think he got up and ran away from the food court? 🤦🏽♂️ It was an impressive shot but it was 40 ft not 40 yards* the food court itself isn't even that big so if you wanted to get a 40-yard shot you could shoot wall to wall and it wouldn't happen because the entire distance from one end to the other the food court isn't even 40 yards lol

@scripteaze Didn't say they had to get married. My observation was that they clearly were both good people and deserve happy lives, whether individually or together. Might have come off that way, but I wasn't saying that they had to be for life.
This is why I shoot bowling pins at 25 meters (27.5 yards) weekly and when relaxed and taking my time I can hit it 80% of the time. The fact he did it on a moving target under stress at 1.5 times the distance on a somewhat bigger target is very impressive and downright heroic. He deserves a statue
Good for you, you're on the right track. Now use a black painted pie plate as a target and hit it 100% of the time shooting one handed. If you can do that there isn't a bad guy out there who wants you anywhere near him
The wonders of practice and adrenaline. It increases our strength and focus so that 40 yards likely seemed more like 10 to the young man and time was moving fairly slowly.
I shoot 2” shoot and see stickers at 15 yards every week at my indoor, (longest distance available there). I shoot 200 or more rounds. Buttttt……. Those are static, my preferred guns are my S&W 41 with a micro red dot, my S&W 17 with stock sights or my Browning Buckmark Ultra-Fast custom race gun, with a SeeMore red dot. Let's also give some credit to Indiana's Lawmakers, that enabled Constitutional Carry only a couple weeks before this incident. Without that, we would most likely count A LOT more casualties than the actual ones. And RIP to the innocent souls we lost.
Let's also give credit to God all mighty for guiding his aim to be on point and steady. Like he guided David's Stone from a slingshot when he Slade Goliath. He too was deemed as the underdog, yet prevailed despite the odds. Again we see this here AR-15 versus compact self defense pistol.

@@Masta-Blasta he did not have one. "Not much is publicly known about Dicken yet, beside the fact that he was legally- *though permitless* -carrying a 9-millimeter Glock gun. In Indiana, carrying a gun no longer requires a permit as of July 1, as of the "constitutional carry" bill."
It's obvious Eli knew his firearm & how to use it. Just learned who taught Eli how to handle a firearm. It was his Grandfather. My Dad (former Deputy Sheriff) taught his entire family including me his daughter & his grandson how to handle firearms. I also believe "good" was with Eli that day. Eli was at the right place at the right time. If he had stopped for just a few moments, he might not have been at the mall when this happened. "Coincidence is God Incognito". Prayers for the families & Eli.
Absolutely correct, the number 1 thing is, to know your firearm and how to use it. Unfortunately many do not, they buy it, shoot it a couple times, then think they are proficient with it. This young man did the work and learned exactly how to use it.....
His first shot was a hit and he engaged the gunman within 15secs of the gunman opening fire , then went on to hit with another 7 rounds , 80% hit rate under pressure. The guy is a well trained hero......
Annoying how they're like "four people are dead" when the murderer is one of the dead and shouldn't be considered a person. They should be saying "3 people dead and the killer was also killed." Stop giving the name of the killer and showing their faces and their life story and their damn motive. Stop glorifying scumbags.
The most important aspect of the entire shooting was that the "gun free" policy the owner of the mall has was ignored by a good guy. Remember, you can legally carry inside of a business, even if they have a posted "no firearms" sign. But you must leave if they ask you to leave. Shouldn't be a problem unless you needlessly brandish your weapon.
I've heard in some states the signs can be legally biding under certain circumstances. It's better to check with a legal professional before ignoring such signs.
@@jay_mw true in South Carolina, but the sign has to be a specific size and format, if they put whatever sign they want and it doesn't comply with the regs, you're good.
Another SC resident here... I'm just here to second the fact that anyone reading this comment needs to check their local laws. In many states the sign is legally binding and ignoring it is a crime. Now... would you rather catch a charge or potentially end up in a body bag? If there is no need for the weapon nobody should ever know it was there. That's the question you need to ask yourself. I know my answer. I would OBVIOUSLY never break the law because I'm a good boy and would rather be dead than to break a senseless law that protects no one.
Depending on the state in question, you are wrong. Here in my state, if the state mandated signage is properly displayed, entering with a firearm is a violation.
The less than 3 week constitutional carry law, and a brave young 22yr old man saved countless lives that day. I read he was taught by his grandfather. It shows how important it is to have a father figure in the home or near to teach these young guys. He and his grandfather should be proud. The practicing and shooting and having his pistol sorted out paid off. He stopped a killer with an AR 15 and took the false narrative away from the "moms against guns" who were plastering media saying that "400 cops couldn't take down a kid with an AR" (what is a citizen with a pistol gonna do)? I imagine He wishes to be left alone. I haven't seen him do 1 media interview on air. I did read 1 statement he gave to the media tho. To take a life is a huge emotional thing regardless. I'm a legal, licensed CCW carrier in CA. If this same situation played out here, I would have pulled my girlfriend behind me, found solid cover and concealment first. If I could safely identify the threat and could see a clear path of cover or concealment, absolutely would have bounded on target but NO WAY IN HELL, I would have posted up at 40 yards to take the shots. It never would have crossed my mind at 40 yards. I would have closed to 40 FEET before taking those shots and likely would have been shot by the shooter, too. Another reason why I think this Eli kid is just BAD ASS. Props, my guy. You are and will remain, THE MAN.
Young man did a great job. Not only engaging the shooter at 40 yards but engaging a moving target at 40 yards with the chaos of battle with people running into his sights but also protecting people in the process. 👍🇺🇸
That young man was in a stress filled situation & in a split second or two from what were told he made the decision to engage the shooter & hit 8 times at range on a moving target. he is a dam good shot in my book because I'm sure he was shooting a hell of a lot faster & hitting than we just saw in practice where you can take the time . I would love to see the uncut videos they have.
25 yards used to be the standard for handgun training. At some point (yeah, I'm old) I began to see people moving to 7 yards and thought that was nonsense. The whole point of training is to increase your skill, not lower the training bar to beginner level skills. There's nothing wrong with practicing advanced skills like double taps and speed drills at 7 or 10 yards (I encourage everyone to do that), but every time you shoot you should also practice slow and rapid fire at 25 yards. If you can group well at 25 yards, you can easily make 50 yard shots. Your groups will be larger at 50 yards, but if proficient at 25 you'll still put entire mags into a torso sized target at 50. Even at 100 yards a hot defense round (or just NATO pressure ball rounds) will only drop about six inches. When you shoot a steel torso target at 100 yards and hear that ring from a hit, your confidence level (in yourself and your chosen carry piece) rises. When you can consistently ring that steel at 100 yards you are a very good shooter. Push the envelope. Train at all reasonable distances, not just seven yards.
We used to play around with a rifle gong at 100 and 200 yards with pistols once we were done with rifles. It didn’t take long for that to become a new part of our regular practice. You are 100% about that confidence from the ring.

It was less than 15 seconds! It was a total of 15 seconds from the moment the shooter opened fire on the crowd to the moment the shooter fell with 8 of Eli's bullets in him! I'm guessing it took Eli about 10 seconds to realize the threat, get his GF to safety, draw and precisely fire 10 rounds in 5 seconds.

That bit about the pole was huge. It shows he knew he had to steady his aim under stress at that range and he also knew the pole made great cover if he took fire in return.
Just adding on ... Most likely he had to first turn around and visually find the bad guy amongst the ruckus and crowd first. How many seconds did that take? Look forward to seeing mall security video. The mall pole was essential.

The shooter was down 15 seconds after he started shooting. There had to be a reaction time by the hero before he got into position and started to shoot at the shooter, so his 10 shots at the shooter would probably be closer to 10 seconds or less. I wonder what kind of bullets the hero was using since the shooter took 8 rounds before going down.
@@mikem9852 gotta remember The shooter was also experiencing an adrenaline dump, he was likely dead on his feet after the first couple shots. There are only 2 ways being shot stops you quickly, blood loss and physical damage you either hit the exact right spot (head, or spine) to drop them or put enough holes in them that they loose blood and pass out. That's why most cops will fire their entire magazine at point blank range.

My pistol range is only 35 yards long, as it’s on a little “flat”. However, I train on 8”, and 10” plates. Getting consistent hits takes lots of practice. It isn’t easy! This young man did an exceptional job at taking down the shooter, considering the circumstances. Practice on small targets. It makes a man size target much easier, as this guy demonstrated. I also have a 10” gong exactly 50 yards from my porch. I can comfortably hit it over 60% of the time, with my pistols. A man size target would easily be near 100%. Aim small, my friends.
It was 40 feet. The maximum effect of range of pistols are 35-45 feet, not yards. The scope on your pistol is designed to shoot at 50 ft not 50 yd. If the kid had tried to shoot the shooter from 50 yards he would have shot the ground in front of him. I've actually managed to hit a 60 meter headshot with a single action revolver. Even though it was a stationary target that was not an easy thing to do, I can only imagine what it's like to hit 8 out 10 hits on a moving target at 40 yards. That guy has some crazy accuracy that I am in awe of, and deeply respect.
@Lurch7861 Yes I know this from personal experience, but still I find it very impressive that he was able to hit the guy as accurately as he did at 40 yards with an auto loader. That in and of itself is a feet worthy of high regard. The fact that he and the guy he was shooting at was moving makes this feet even more impressive.
This is a very good reason why all law abiding citizens should be able to carry a firearm to protect themselves, their families and other innocent people from vicious criminals. God bless this young man for saving the lives of innocent people.
I understand why some gun channels are replicating this shooting to give perspective but none of them are in that moment no one is shooting back at them with an AR . One instructor was so happy with his timed drill.
I am old school, and old as well. My dept qualification for duty started at 50 yards then moved closer for the rest of the drills. At almost 7 decades I have been shooting for over 50 years. Today, when I go to the indoor range I move the targets as far down range as the building allows which is 75 feet. It never ceases to amaze me watching other folks on the other lanes shooting at 15 feet or closer and thinking they are getting good practice burning ammo as fast as they can. Not really impressive to me. If you can hit at 25 to 50 yards, then shooting at 15 yards is a snap.
Myself - 44 yrs shooting. I shot 20 yds for 3 yrs. about 10k per yr. Then I went center fire and out to 100yds. Skill takes years to develop and this young person displays the best form when confronted. I watched a shoot a month ago. 15 yds was the farthest shot. 9 ft - the closest. Real world is close and distance. And he handled his adrenaline dump. Great work!
FBI statistics. 90% gun fights are 5-7 yards and happen in 3-5 seconds. If you can hit a 1inch square at 5 yards, you will have zero problems hitting a Silhouette at 40 yards. I also thought the same but reversed when people at the range put the targets clear in the back, I think what are they training for a gun fight with the neighbors clear a cross the street.
I hit my first 100yrd shots a couple weeks ago. 10" steel plate. Shooting 2years. I ALWAYS shoot my indoor max of 75' warm up is 45. If you never push yourself, you won't get better. 👍👍👍👍👍
I am old school as well, Retired Border Patrol. When I first joined the BP the quarterly pistol qualification of 72 rounds included 8 from the fifty yard line. For some reason, they went to a max 25 yard qualification around 1996. I have always felt that was a mistake. I found that practice from the fifty (and 100) made everything else seem easy as it was so close. For info, I found that a 4-6 inch holdover at 100 provided me with conxsistent X-ring hits with both 357 and 9mm. You have to know your sights and control the trigger.
The fact that the kid hit 8 out of 10 rounds at 40 yards with possibly stock sights is impressive let alone doing it under pressure. These anti 2nd amendment people blow my mind when they get their panties in a wad over the fact that he concealed his weapon in a gun free zone. I would rather be judged by 12 than be carried by 6 any day. Kudos to this kid for saving the lives he did that day.
Nah mate... There's no "anti-2nd amendment" people. What they are saying is that people like the assailant shouldn't be allowed to own firearms, and terrorists watch list people, mentally ill, people a history of violence or anyone who is more than likely to cause harm with a firearm. Now if the shooter had not been able to get a rifle, and go hunting in a mall, some more people might be alive today, and Eli wouldn't have to be a hero that he became. He would have still carried his firearm, but wouldn't have needed to use it on the day. That's how this works. No one want to take guns away from RESPONSIBLE people.
Hey Mate, did you ever think about the fact if they banned them tomorrow, there’s enough in this country to make a path in the ocean to your country. Meaning criminals can still get them. Do you EVER think about THAT. Mate.
@@Spanky-ju6rc it's not a thought,it's reality. There are 3 times as many firearms than there are people here in the states. If our dumb ass government ever decides to take guns away from us and for some long shot chance succeeding in doing so,we will be screwed. Criminals don't follow laws.
@Don Baumann it beats being a ignorant banjo player. But name calling doesn't help anyone. Read what I said carefully and respond to the points that you think, are incorrect. Then I'll respond back, and we can keep that up. It's called having a healthy debate.
Well @@Spanky-ju6rcPLEASE READ BELOW SLOWLY: I'm sure you read my statement above as saw the words "ban all firearms" there. No! Wait! You didn't. The reason for that is because I didn't say that. Right, now about illegally obtaining (it means getting) a firearm, is a seperate issue. Again, no-one is asking for a total ban on all guns, PAL, just make it harder for sick, angry, harmful people to own a weapon that could kill children and innocent people by the hundreds every year! FYI, only in the US is it easier for a person on a terrorist watchlist to get a gun legally, than anywhere else in the world, barring conflict zones! DOES THAT MAKE SENSE, PAL?
I just can't believe that there are ignorant people out there, who are still trying to spin this into some kind of example of why we should have gun control... They don't seem to get the fact that a criminal doesn't care if they are legally in possession of a firearm, all gun control does is make it more difficult(or impossible) for someone like Mr. Dicken to do what he did. As they say, ignorance is bliss.
What about all the times the "criminal" gets the gun legally? It's very childish to just "skip" over all of those cases. Reasonable gun control laws would not make it difficult or impossible for any responsible citiizen to obtain a firearm.
@@JohnSmith-ft4fz the thing people need to understand is "reasonable" turns into more and more control until it is out of control, the problem with gun control is, these politicians get out of control with their "reasonable" laws, if giving up my guns tomorrow would save every child's life in the world, I would do it instantly, but that will never happen, there is no guarantee that gun control will solve anything, we live in this type of world where a person has to kill someone else because they're killing innocent people.
@@JohnSmith-ft4fz then your little small town must have 0 crime and you don't need to speak on gun control then, why worry about it if you're safe in your little neighborhood, you're either lying or are out of touch with reality.
Im glad someone did a vid on this. 40 yards is an impressive feat with a compact handgun, and 8 out of 10 confirmed hits. Could take a lot to learn from this event and feat
Great video. That kid in Indiana did great! That’s tough with a handgun and I can’t imagine the stress of knowing your target has a rifle. We should all practice 40 yard shots with our carry guns.
Absolutely incredible and thankfully there are still good men that step up to stop evil. Your target wasn’t moving and trying to escape. I believe you’re better trained and of course the only pressure was stage fright. Not being critical of you, just more admiration for the mall hero.
This young man did an amazing job. I have had a CCW for 14 years and I've only shot it up to 25 EDIT... yards. I will now be moving back and trying to hone my skills.
You shot at targets 25 years away? Those shots haven't even reached their targets! Get back to us in 11 years when they do and tell us how accurate you were :)
@@jangjangpeebo703 Lets see someone else pull off a 25 year shot, then get back to me. I'll be the one standing over here with the chip on his shoulder. :)
Most people who carry have already made up their minds that they have the metal to take a life. Evil people do evil things. No worse than putting a rabid dog down. I doubt the kid is losing much sleep over what he did.
Amazing Marksmanshipby this young man, I'd like to know about his training. . I can't believe how good of a shot this kid was. God bless him and keep him through the upcoming storm
I hit 14/16 at 100 yards. Had a lot of dirty looks standing at the 100 yard rifle lane until i brought the target back. You did well. Not to take anything away from the hero, but he was shooting more like bench rest. Off a pole or table helps steady you. He was 8/10 under pressure with no ear plugs and people running and yelling. As a pure citizen with no formal training, i say he should be up for the medal of freedom and his first beer is free anywhere he goes for life.
40 yards is out of the question for me. I used to practice alot at 25 yards and never did as well as I would have liked to. Definitely a challenge for sure. I don't want to take away anything from this young man's skill but, there may have been some divine intervention involved because he was willing to risk it all for others i.e., David vs Goliath. Just a thought.
There is a pillar he was standing by 40 ft in front of the bathroom where he pushed his girlfriend behind the pillar to protect her. He was sitting at the table right next to the pillar... Why he would run away and go inside the cell phone store to shoot a guy in the bathroom?? 😆... People have no idea what they are talking about lol, they just picked this one up and ran with it lol.. he was close enough to the bathrooms to yell people out because he was hiding behind the pillar directly in front of the bathrooms which is about 40 ft
I keep seeing everyone in the 2A community saying they want to get this young man gear or interview him. But haven't heard anyone mention helping him with the mental trauma of taking a life even though he took out a bad guy. Taking a life is never easy.
In my experience with combat related PTSD is that what is trauma to one is not trauma to all. I have met men that had issues with having killed the enemy, and actually know more that didn’t have any issues with killing the enemy. The issue I found more men were dealing with was losing their fellow soldiers, or seeing innocent children injured or killed. Mindset is developed in training, and we don’t rise to the occasion we revert to our training. I think Eli probably has some training, and has practiced what he’d do if he were ever in this exact situation.
Probably because they are gun guys and not mental health professionals? I think the only thing weighing on your midn at that point is that you didn't react fast enough to save one or more extra people. Even though he did such a good job.
Ghee , IDK. Maybe I'm older and colder. But I have seriously injured a thief before who was stealing my property. Keep in mind that I had been hit in burglaries , 15 or 20 times , with thefts over ten thousand dollars. I didn't feel one bit bad about the thief losing his leg.
For most handgun carriers this is far . Remember you own every bullet , good or bad . Best to clear the people near you and close your range . This is for average shooter . Train , Train , Train .
Excellent shooting, on this young man's part. I'm a retired law enforcement firearms instructor and ran qualification shoots for lots of departments, over the years. Our qualifications were from 25 yards and in and many officers struggled with grouping well at 25 yards. I have some specialty handguns that I shoot at fairly long distances. But they're definitely not carry guns. I do a lot of back country exploring in my 4X4 and figure if I run into serious trouble (I don't look for it) then my carry gun is just to allow me to fight my way back to the vehicle to get my rifle. Good video and good shooting. I enjoyed watching it. Thanks
I agree, the gun owner did what he could under the stress filled, rapid event. I recall other mall shootings, spree incidents where ccw users, gun owners on scene later said the sounds were like fire crackers or balloons 🎈. They were also unable to make clear shots. This young guy saved many lives.
Other factors that you have to take into account is that this man's heart must have been racing because the person he is shooting at has superior fire power. People are running all around him (distractions). I honestly don't know how he made those shots. I think I heard he is going into the military. He should consider special forces.
Wow. Great shot. I don't think the general public can relate to how hard it is to place 8 of 10 at 40 yards. You, are an exception and have the benefit of environment. I'd like to know what 9mm the hero was using. Ya know, it brings a tear to me eye hearing the heroics of this young man and that his girl went to the aid of others... What a great story. Time Magazine couple of the year..
You’re addressing the real that we’re facing right now, please make this a thing without freaking everyone out, we need to live our lives just with heightened awareness. Saw a young man with a hip carry med kit, made me cry for a number of reasons, but mostly because he cared.
Think Joe will give him a US medal?
He should get the highest civilian medal.

The most important aspect of the entire shooting was that the "gun free" policy the owner of the mall has was ignored by a good guy. That's the question you need to ask yourself.
I know my answer. I would OBVIOUSLY never break the law because I'm a good boy and would rather be dead than to break a senseless law that protects no one.

I imagine He wishes to be left alone. I haven't seen him do 1 media interview on air. I did read 1 statement he gave to the media tho. To take a life is a huge emotional thing regardless. Pray for this young man going forward. I'm sure he has some new enemies now unfortunately.

Anyone can paint a target. Dicken is a gunfighter!
Especially since he was motioning people with his left hand which means he could have been shooting with a single hand on the pistol.
Really nice comment. Well put
Love the advice
We used to play around with a rifle gong at 100 and 200 yards with pistols once we were done with rifles. It didn’t take long for that to become a new part of our regular practice. You are 100% about that confidence from the ring.
It was 40ft not 40 yards..

I heard Eli hit the gunman 8 of 10 shots in 15 seconds. That is astounding to me knowing it's a high-stress situation and a moving target. Mind-blowing.

@@RPG-oh1yf It's why the police demand AR-15's, they are designed to hit accurately with good knockdown power at tremendous distances, which makes them much safer for bystanders or hostages, pretty interesting that they were created for hunters back in the late 1950's and early 1960's, not the modern military, something the Media gets wrong every single time. They adopted a militarized version of it as their battle rifle, becoming the M-16. The AR-15 itself was NEVER used by the U.S. military. Ever. 40yds, 8 out of 10rds hit, in 15 seconds against moving active shooter with a serious adrenaline dump and chaos all around? Hell of a shooter.
The food court was only 30 yards in length so I'm scratching my head trying to figure out how he was 40 away....

Yup true that, even with everyone telling him he did the right thing (which he did) there’s always that feeling of guilt and trauma of bearing the weight of taking a life
Amen to that 👍
My pistol range is only 35 yards long, as it’s on a little “flat”.
He was posted up outside the bathroom behind the pillar that is 40 ft in front of the bathroom not 40 yards... But of course the entire world jumps on that bandwagon and now he is a superstar 😆

Well done by this young man! This is a great video. Makes me think about my capabilities at distance.
Wow Amazing Offer !!!That Boi ,Is Amazing!!
Other factors that you have to take into account is that this man's heart must have been racing because the person he is shooting at has superior fire power. People are running all around him (distractions). I honestly don't know how he made those shots. I think I heard he is going into the military. He should consider special forces.
Superior fire power or not just shooting at another human being is going to be significantly more difficult.
Agreed! If the hero misses his first shots then the scumbag may turn his rifle on him and he'll be out gunned, yet he engaged anyway. Awesome!
“I think I heard he is going into the military” no you didn’t. Stop thinking because you suck at it.
Nice work. I am impressed with how well you shoot, any pistol.
thanks, but I need to practice more.
@@GunsandTactics We all do. Except the hero.
Beautiful shooting and yes the young man us a hero.
Wow.
Time magazine wants a high "body count" to push their gun confiscation agenda. They won't be giving Eli & girlfriend any honors.
40 FEET*
He was braced against a pillar as well. We also need to understand that cops are notoriously inaccurate at post shooting press conferences.
Not sure why that matters.
@@User-lg6dr Why what matters?
Give this guy a medal and a monetary reward.
You’re addressing the real that we’re facing right now, please make this a thing without freaking everyone out, we need to live our lives just with heightened awareness.
Saw a young man with a hip carry med kit, made me cry for a number of reasons, but mostly because he cared.
