You must be a little bit impressed that humanity has developed technology similar to photosynthesis.
Windmills, or basic turbines, have been around for years. Tesla was able to harvest energy for electricity with Niagara Falls.
Humanity advances when we develop more simple solutions.
A solar panel getting its self-tan means less work for me AND more economic independence from other countries…?

America's most powerful geopolitical rival is China and regarding this adversary the United States has leadership in three of four strategic technologies, namely semiconductors and their manufacture, biotechnology and artificial intelligence. In the fourth strategic technology, renewable energy, China has a leadership position. U. S. domestic policy on all energy fronts has been to decouple from all carbon based energy sources. The forces of such policy will result in strategic vulnerability to China, whether is is dependence on imported elements of infrastructure such as solar panels or finished products, most notably the soon to appear low priced electric vehicles from China. These vehicles are likely subsidized by the Chinese Communist Party and the net result will be additional unemployment in the U. S. automobile industry.
