Frieren stopped when she about to tell old man Voll that demon king was already slain probably because she was being considerate, old man Voll is defending the village from the demon king armies and that reason alone is the single pillar of his memories of his late wife, he's probably suffering from dementia and struggling to keep the memories from fading away.
Dementia is a sad fate. The final 6 months of my grandfather's life, he could not remember my grandmother's death earlier that year. She was the only person keeping his mind grounded. Every time he was reminded, I'm sure his heart broke again. Sometimes it's better to let dementia patients live without regret rather than remind them constantly of what they're forgetting.
After my grandmother passed, my aunt couldn't take care of my grandfather any longer and had to move him into a facility. I assume for a majority of his stay, he assumed he was in recovery after a hospital visit and my grandmother was back home. I think in his final month, he finally realized she was gone, at least on a deeper level, as he started to just give up on life.
I'm quite certain that Old Man Voll was starting to suffer from dementia and didn't remember that they already set off the first time we saw them meet. And that Frieren just let him be instead of making him suffer knowing that he's slowly starting to lose all of his memories.
i would rather this anime without cruel diseases instead forget something just because of getting old. its mor convenient. on a fantasy setting there is more good food and i believe more sleeptime (both had a huge effect on dementia). Remember the life expectation of a dwarv is ~300 and Voll Oji is 400 and probably more. English is not my native language :3
It can be very stressful for dementia patients to be constantly be reminded of thing they forget, Frieren likely knows this and didn’t want him to become upset or stressed about his memory.
I used to run a dementia care facility and it's so hard for me to watch families come visit their loved ones deteriorate. Episodes like this make me feel a little nostalgic of it. There's a term called "sundowning" that is a state of confusion that usually lasts in the late afternoon into the night, which is what I first thought when I saw Old Man Voll ask Frieren that question. The funny thing about a lot of dementia patients is that they can recall some long term memories very vividly which is why I think him being with Frieren and talking about the past is sobering.
Also one of the main reasons why I watch reaction channels is because I like seeing the different ways people think and portray how things play out in a show compared to me. So I don't mind leaps in logic from Nathan lol :s
i think sein obviously knows Gorilla warriors REAL name, they were already friends.
He is choosing not to share it, cuz his friend decided Gorilla Warrior is gonna be his name from now on and people will remember him by it.
He doesn't want to change that. He wants him to be known with the name he chose to leave an impression.
Now frierens face expression progress even further and better. Never see frieren often smile like this in a episode.
If dwarfes average life is 300 and he has been "defending" the village for 400... if average human age is 75. It would mean Voll has been defending that village for 100 human years. Voll is over 100 years old in human years. Quite the old man.
look at the age of the boys. and at the age of the man. how well would you remember the name your childhood friend had some 20 years after he stopped using it?

I really think you misinterpreted something earlier on in the show to think the demon king is alive. There has been no hit of any kind to suggest that at all. That doesnt mean there wont/cant be another demon king, but there really has been no hint that the demon king lives... and because of this fixation on this idea you really misinterpreted another scene with Voll and the obvious meaning of this episode of forgetting memories and forgetting who you you are.
