Wild Camping in Ireland | 2 Nights | North Mayo Sea Cliffs

- A 53 km walk along the stunning and remote sea cliffs of North Mayo, with 1,700m of ascent/descent along this roller coaster of a coast.
Day 1 - starting on Saturday evening at the small village of Carrowteige (where there is ample parking) and following the way marked loop walk to magnificent Benwee Head and the Eire 63 WW2 Coastal Watch. A first wild camp beside a small river under a cloud of stars at Portacloy brought a peaceful nights sleep.
Day 2 - a beautiful day to continue walking across the golden sands of Portacloy and climbing to more dramatic and remote cliffs towards the small fishing village of Portlurin. Glimpsed a fox up here and watched boats far below checking their lobster pots. A long day walking some of the most dramatic coastal landscapes in Ireland to eventually end up on the last of the hills before the drop to Belderg. A beautiful sunset and a very windy night brought unsettled sleep under yet more clouds of stars.
Day 3 - another stunning day as I left the edge of this dramatic coastline to drop down to a high and quiet road for the 25km walk back to the starting point. Despite the miles of tarmac this was delightful walking with a different perspective on the beautiful North Mayo landscape.

This is absolutely one of the most peaceful, relaxing, and soothing videos I have seen. Your creativity and spirit is so moving and touching for many of us. I find such inspiration in this because for a few years already I have struggled with my mental health and really slowly I am getting back to things that I used to be able to do with ease. You inspire me a lot and I want to thank you for it. Sending love and wishing you the best on your journey :)
Thank you so much for your very kind words👍 It is cool to hear that you are slowly and surely getting back to those things. Being out in the mountains does wonders for my health & wellbeing, it provides that peace, relaxation and inspiration for life, which at times can be difficult. Love and best wishes for your continuing journey❤️
getting better and better 👍👍👍
Cheers Troy👍 It is just a stunning coastline that goes on and on and has you gasping in places and not another person in sight😊
Absolutely stunning photography! Thank you for sharing! ☘
Cheers Ann👍 That is an absolutely stunning stretch of coastline and it was a joy to spend 2 nights under the stars along it😊
@@gerrymcveigh Beautiful!
Wonderful! I love seeing the wild coast, the ocean and all the views of the amazing North Mayo sea cliffs!! Very artistic filming, enjoyed all the details you included, very peaceful to watch. We visited the Cliffs of Moher, (like other tourists), when we visited Ireland a few years ago- rugged and amazing, and these cliffs give me the same feeling! We had a wonderful time in Ireland... would love to go back and maybe wild camp. Wonderful trip! :) like!!👍👍💚💚
Jennifer, sounds like you had a great trip to Ireland💚 Definitely some beautiful coastline out along the Wild Atlantic Way👍
That was wonderful Gerry - such a great stretch of coastline to walk along and show us! Magnificent cliffs and life to be seen all along the coast there. That was some distance and climbing to have done over your 3 days also. Nice to hear about your use of the bike in the past too 👍 I can well imagine the potential impact of strong gusts while walking in such open places....a good reminder! 3 days well spent 😎 I spent the night on Knockanaffrinn last night - unexpected windy weather broke a pole and damaged the fly sheet of my little one person tent 🙁 Thankfully it still provided me with enough shelter to get through until the morning as I wouldn't have fancied descending with just my head torch to guide me. Nature reminded me who was boss again!!
Miriam, Mayo has it all😊 I am not sure how a tent would have fared on my second night as I could feel it even in the bivy💨 I am sure that was a challenging night on Knockanaffrinn with a damaged tent and even contemplating having to abandon camp. I was up on Slieve Snaght on Inishowen over the weekend and can definitely notice the shorter evenings and a chillier night air, as well as having a steady wind. Nature is always boss. Here is to Autumn with cooler crisper weather and no midges😊
What a way to spend a few days.. Your first bivy spot was perfect.. Absolutely stunning. I always look forward to your uploads, they never disappoint. You make these long walks look too easy 😄So chill, I love it>
Cheers Jason, it was a great few days out away from it all with only the natural world to take in, great for the heart and soul😊 As you know it is always cool to camp beside flowing water💦👍
Superb Gerry
Cheers George👍 I have been fascinated by this remote coastline since reading about it in those old guidebooks of Irish walks. Having done parts before it was fantastic to do the full walk and wild camp for 2 nights under the most beautiful star filled skies⭐️😊
Love it, like a beautiful short vacation at my kitchen! Thx for sharing!
Cheers Armin👍 I love watching people's adventures too (from the kitchen or wherever😊) and being taken along to somewhere new😊
Well captured again Gerry. Amazing conditions too.
Cheers Patrick👍 It is a stunning section of coastline and the weather was good to me, perhaps a little less wind would have made it perfect😊
Incredible and wild part of Maigh Eo there Gerry. Absolutely beautiful footage.
Would you remember the name of the old walking book you mentioned that you first heard about the walk in by any chance?
Steve, incredible and wild are certainly words I would use to describe this beautiful area👍
A route covering a good part of the walk is in 'Walk Guide West of Ireland' by Patrick Simms & Tony While (1994) and 'Best Irish Walks' edited by Joss Lynam (1994)
Stunning Gerry, awesome footage.
Cheers Chris👍 the whole place is awesome and I just needed to be there to point the camera😊
Hey Gerry, got to admit this was a beautiful walk. Im not a fan of the coast or the sea. Just not my thing. Give me a forest, a river or a mountain and im in my happy place, but I am almost....almost converted having watched your video. Also, what a distance! You covered a good few kms!
Alyn, coastal walking with hills and mountains thrown in is the ultimate👍😊 I have had my eye on this particular walk for quite a while, having done 2 shorter loops in the area a few years and knowing how beautiful it was. It was definitely worth doing and is now ticked off the bucket list😊
Ireland looks simply stunning! Loved the windy grass shots! Keep making memories & adventure on! ~Karen & Shannon WOY
Cheers Karen & Shannon👍 It is a beautiful part of Ireland and was a great adventure😊
Class video Gerry as always, some beautiful footage love watching this
keep them coming Gerry....👍👍👍
Regards Heavydigging
Cheers👍 That has to be one of the best walks I have done here in Ireland. The remoteness, the solitude, the scenery and the beautiful dark night sky made it memorable😊
Thanks again for a brilliant video
Cheers John👍 It is such a stunning and remote stretch of coast and it was an absolute pleasure to walk it👣😊
I love the north mayo sea cliffs! I went recently when I traveled around Ireland!
Mark, you know how awesome that place is too👍👍 Well worth a visit.
What beautiful scenery !
Thank you👍 It is a beautiful place 😊
Beautiful and amazing view of nature for camping enjoy and have a great day
Thank you👍 It was an amazing experience to spend time in this beautiful place😊
Very good Gerry, great video and some great vistas, cheers
Cheers Mick, it was fantastic to walk the length of the cliffs. It has to be one of the best stretches of coastline in all of Ireland and so remote and unvisited. It was a great experience😊
Absolutely superb video Gerry. The Irish Tourist Board needs to sponsor you!! Those sea and cliff views were just spectacular. Glad you got some sleep as 52k is a lot of distance to cover. Loved the outtake at the end too! Regards, Ashley
Cheers Ashley👍 They can sponsor me a new pillow😊 (I have to get one of those Trekology ones that people keep talking about). It is an amazing place away in the heart of nowhere. It was pretty windy the whole trip and there were a few sudden gusts that moved the feet along involuntarily!
Lovely video !!! Rambling on sent me . atb
Cheers👍 Thank you for tuning in😊
Beautiful camping spot by the river.
It is a really cool spot and probably why I returned to it again, can't beat camping beside water💦😊
@@gerrymcveigh how do you know where to go and how do you get there?
Nice one Gerry, fair play!
Cheers Jonathan👍 It was a brilliant trip with everything working pretty much according to plan, except my pillow falling into the river on the first night and having to carry it strapped to the outside of the rucksack the next day for it to dry out😊
Wow Awesome view very beautiful my friend
Thank you👍 It was awesome and beautiful😊
Superb Jerry, thanks for sharing 👍
Cheers👍 It was a superb few days with great weather, great walking and fantastic scenery. Not sure if anything could have made it better😊
Hi! Wonderful video, I really enjoyed watching it. Have a lovely day my fried 🌻
Thank you😊 Have a great week👍
Amazing to see this coastal area...so very similar to the coast along area of Cape Breton here in Nova Scotia. Awesome! Bruce and Otis
Cape Breton sounds like a really cool place👍 Coastline like that is hard to beat😊
Simply breathtaking Gerry. I`ve so missed not being over there the last couple of years. I bought a motorbike recently so I`m planning a week over there prob next June on the bike with the Mrs ! Can`t wait 😃
Cheers Martin👍 that sounds like a cool plan👍
Wow Gerry. Some shots. Shots new the edge gave me vertigo 🤣 what a spot. You got stunning weather. Missed your last video. Most check out your Bivy camps. 😊 Always look forward to your videos. 😁
Cheers Martin👍 It is a stunning coastline with some big drops😊 and the weather was great☀️ It was fantastic to bivy the 2 nights under clear skies and to see shooting stars⭐️😊
Nice video. You have a great day 👍
Thank you👍😊 Have a great week.
Great video thanks for posting. It's a truly spectacular location. I haven't been up there in a couple of years. I'll definitely return at some stage. In his 1937 book The Way That I Went, Robert Lloyd Praeger described the area as the "finest stretch of coastal architecture."
Cheers Damien👍 I agree it is truly spectacular, I hadn't been for a few years and it was calling me back so well worth a return visit👍 Robert Lloyd Praeger called it right👍
Brilliant spot mate.
Cheers James👍 Definitely some of the best cliff walking in Ireland😊
Cracking wee pitch ! Enjoyed that ! Keep it up , new sub here 👍🏻🏕
Cheers Ally👍 The bivy can go pretty much anywhere😊 Subbed back👍
A beautiful spot Gerry, spent time that way a couple of years ago, a place I hope to return to in the coming weeks.
Peter it is a stunning place and it was well worth a return visit for me, as I hope it will be for you😊
Wow beautiful scenery and I really enjoyed watching. New subscriber here from #RTBL
Thank you👍 New subscriber here too😊
Go steady with them landslips gerry - right bugger if it went just as you stood on it. A bit like the straw that broke the camels back. Ha ha! Lie in - it was certainly the stars and that water combined that did it bro. Not complaining though eh? I agree a totally glorious stretch of Coast line. Awe inspiring in fact. Ireland does it again or gerry m does. Well, good going on that windy one to. All the best as always. Mark
Mark, I think that bit of cliff has a few years left in it yet though there are powerful forces at work on it. It was a beautiful couple of nights under the stars with no light pollution in the west of Ireland, there is something magical about just lying down and looking up at the night sky⭐️😊 it is a glorious stretch of coastline and there are not many of those where you wouldn't meet a single person, another beauty of the far west of Ireland😊 All the best to you too👍
@@gerrymcveigh Oh, I know that about the cliff gerry - I was pulling your leg. I bet it was incredible. I mean the West of Ireland is the least populated. That coastline still feels and sounds wild.
wow - currently looking to extend this walk a bit to Belderg (and get the bus back - not sure I could handle the long road walk)
There is a bus!!!! 😊 It is a stunningly beautiful and remote walk with coastal views hard to beat anywhere in Ireland I
would say. I loved that I pretty much didn't met another person along the way. The road walk back was long though enjoyable in a way😊
Where would you be Gerry without your special hat!! lol Hi you're a wee bit too close for comfort to the cliff edge there! Mind how you go! Eagle eyes for those seals Gerry!!!! You were standing on that slipped bit! Not a good idea!!!!!! I'll watch the rest tomorrow! lol
Tom, I love my hats as my head burns in minutes without the protection from the ☀️ It was just amazing to be walking along such a dramatic stretch of coastline and in a very remote area. It always cool to spot seals hauled up on storm beaches far below🦭😊
