I've said it before and I'll say it again Gerry, you make beautiful content. Practical, informative and beautiful. Another great journey, thanks for taking us with you.
Cheers Alyn👍I will have 'practical, informative and beautiful' as my mantra😊 It was cool to go back after a long absence and there are a few more hills around there that I would like to spend the night on😊
Hi Gerry - Great camp at Slieve Snaght! I've seen quite a few frogs this summer, so it was fun to see that you found one too! Pretty pink heather and tumbling water! Loved seeing the views from the summit and the clouds rushing over and into the next valley. Seems like it's windy more often than not, but I guess it's good to keep the bugs away... probably a great trade off :) Thanks for sharing your trip, very peaceful to follow along :) Atb ~ Jennifer
Cheers Jennifer👍 Ireland is definitely a windy country😊 It has been pretty settled over the summer and we will see what Autumn brings😊 I would take the wind over the bugs any day👍 Always cool to spot a 🐸 when out walking, though it doesn't happen that often. It was a a lovely and peaceful trip😊
Nice one Gerry 👌 Getting chilly enough these evenings for the bivvy I'd say but not much space up there for a tent 🏕 Yet more inspiration to explore my own county 😎
Cheers Niall👍 There was a definite chill in the air for that one with the fresh northerly breeze, though it was all cosy in the sleeping bag. It is a fantastic rocky top with all those cairns and has superb views on a good day and is very accessible.
Fair play to you Gerry for getting a sleep up there. Last time I was up there was New Year's Day 2019. Mist came in all around and the wind was howling. I was sat in that wee cairn trying to heat my stove and dry my outer shell, with no success. Had to use my compass to get off the mountain as the mist left me disorientated. But it's a great hike despite the slog through the bog. Speaking of alcohol litter. I found a six pack of Guinness cans lying on a pile of peat when I was walking down. Couldn't get more Irish litter than that. 🤣
Chris, was that a full or empty six pack😊 The weather wasn't too bad for me so spending the night was cool, wouldn't have fancied a howling wind in January though❄❄
That’s a great wee guide book from Adrian. I’ve been working my way through it and done that one last Tuesday. Unfortunately Snaght was completely enshrouded in mist so I got no views at all. The upright rocks on the summit in the mist made it a haunting experience! Thankfully it cleared up by the time I got to Main. Hard to beat Donegal, just love it. Thanks for sharing your experiences again Gerry.
Pat, I have quite a few of those Collins Press Guidebooks and definitely don't look at them often enough for some inspiration👍 It is a great book and doesn't leave much out for walking in Donegal and Sligo👍 I sometimes struggle with the motivation in thinking about a trip and this definitely helped. Did you meet anyone else on your trip?
@@gerrymcveigh Gerry I’ve done approximately half the walks in Adrian’s book and could count on one and a half hands the amount of people I have met while out meandering :-). On this occasion however I did run into one of the landowners at the start of the walk. He was out tending his sheep. Friendly sheep farmer with absolutely no issues with walkers. Think I have one more walk up that way ( Ragtin More ) then I am more or less done with Inishowen. I see you’ve done that one before too. Can you remember if there was any decent camping spots? I don’t plan to do the Urris hills as I done them at the start of summer.
Malin Beg has to be one of the most beautiful beaches in Ireland👍. Was there a hot summer a few years ago when it burnt the feet on the sand and there were dolphins jumping out in the bay😊
Lovely clear footage as always Gerry. Really nice combination of shots and sounds. still not convinced about sleeping in a bivy, have thoughts of been woken by a sheep licking my face 🤐🐑. Looking forward to your next trip.
Some speedy running there Gerry! 😎 No one around and having the place to yourself - I still find it amazing and truly satisfying that so many places on the mountains or next to the coast in Ireland can offer so much solitude. Loved those fast rolling clouds you captured 👍 The bivy looked a great choice for that rocky summit with a flat green space amongst them! Nice to see another area explored, I haven’t climbed Slieve Snacht and it’s one for the near future I hope. And a new season begins….🤗
Miriam, I am constantly amazed like yourself that there are no other people in these stunning places when I go there, even on a weekend. Maybe we just have so many stunning places😊 It had been many years since I was last up in these hills and it was cool to return. It is a mountain that is usually prominent when looking northwards from the Sperrin Mountains. Bivy is the way to go if the weather allows😊
Im confused, i was just watching just your video miriam and i thought u were camping on slieve snaght so i looked up more youtube videos and then your video gerry was just uploaded a day ago, then i seen your comment miriam that you havnt climbed it yet...im badly confused by the whole situation lol. Both great videos, i love watching them all 🙂🏕
@@livinginmyownlittleworldad1905 🤣 your confusion is very understandable!! I'll solve the mystery for you - there are actually two mountains called Slieve Snacht in Donegal and I've only climbed one of them. The one I climbed is in the Derryveagh Mountains and the other one that Gerry captured here is in the Inishowen Peninsula - a bit further north. Thanks for watching my little trip up to the other one! 😊
@@MiriamKennedy 🤣 thats great thank u. Its brilliant just watching ppl exploring these hidden gems in ireland. I think it adds more to the video by doing these great adventures solo, the views are amazing.
Cheers Gavin👍 It is a fantastic way to be close to the environment rather than being enclosed in a tent and is my preferred option😊 The weather has to be right though and a tent has its advantages, especially if there are midges😊
Hi Gerry. We 'discovered' the fabulous Inishowen peninsula back in 2018 when we had a wee mid-week break at the Redcastle hotel. What a fascinating hidden treasure trove of stories, people and interesting places. We travelled right around the coastline and were amazed at what we stumbled across. Your video gives us another kind of view of the place that we really didn't see.
Tom, I love Inishowen too👍 I have stayed there a few times, renting houses for the week, something Covid has interrupted and which I would like to get back to next year. There is tons to see and do with beaches and mountains galore. The trip over on the ferry from Magilligan to Greencastle is cool (if still going) and saves loads of time and miles👍
Great video Gerry as always. Although it was a micro adventure for you it seemed to be just as enjoyable as your longer trips and it was just as good a video too. The little frog was pretty cool, I have seen a good few out and about lately and your close up shots of the plants were class 👍
Cheers Jason👍 I am usually out for 2 full days walking and the overnight camp so an evening and a morning felt more like a micro adventure in some ways. There are a few other places in that part of the world that I would like to spend a night and the same approach would work, especially as the evenings close in😊
Nice video Gerry. Loved those time lapse of the clouds rolling in. Interesting topic about meeting someone, especially when your talking about it in the dark, could have been quite frightening if you had😲You captured some beautiful wee plants.
Cheers Aidan👍 I thought there might have been someone up there late evening perhaps heading down before darkness but there was no one. I am not sure if I have ever met someone after dark on a mountain. Not much in terms of biodiversity with the sheep being present though it is always cool to see some of that mountain ash and oak clinging on in the little river valleys👍
Thank you👍 The ☀ waited until I was off the mountain before making an appearance😊 and the air was brilliantly clear with that northerly breeze, perhaps coming all the way from Norway😊
The ground wasn't too bad with all the dry weather we have been having though in normal conditions it would be a very different story💧💧😊 It was really cool to be the only person up on the summit of the mountain👍
Sean, I have worn that other hat to its destruction as it was so comfortable and the peak folded so it was easy to carry in the pocket (which was its downfall)😊
Troy, a great wee walk👍 There are a ton of mountains I haven't climbed in the SW. A wee cottage for the week might be on the cards for next year. Had a great week in Dingle a good few years ago.
Enjoyed that gerry - yeah every little counts. I'm speaking of the bottle you took away. So, good to see the Scottish mountains. We see the Black Mountains from Hereford - their a big black wall rising to 800 meters. Hey, nice one for including the rivers. We love that as waterlings. Cheers gerry. Have a great week ahead. Mark
Cheers Mark👍 That northerly wind opened up the views and I could see what I think were the Paps on Jura which has to be over 100km away. It is always great to walk alongside and explore rivers and hear those soothing sounds💧👍 Have a great week ahead too Mark👍
@@gerrymcveigh A pleasure gerry. Hey, good on the wind. Wow, 100 K away - that's an odd feeling. As for the rivers - yeah love them sounds and just the encounter. I will have good one.
Great wee video as usual Gerry. I don't know if you are on commission but you should be. Just ordered that guide book as I would love to do a few hikes that direction.
Cheers Alan👍 You wont be disappointed as it is a great wee book taking in many of the smaller and less visited hills and mountains of Donegal👍 All brilliant walking😊
Looked like a lovely route Gerry, the signage looked really well done although probably one of the worse sounding mountain names in Ireland. The timelapse and music was great. That looks like heavyduty stove you use. Isn't it funny, you spend half the night trying to get to sleep when wild camping, and when you finally do its almost time to get up.
Cheers David👍That was my first ever stove and it made an appearance as I couldn't find where I had put my much smaller and lighter Pocket Rocket😊 There are some nights it seems to take forever to get to sleep and it makes getting up in the morning so much harder😊
Unreal Gerry. That cloud inversion time laps was something special. What a great camp. Your some man for the bivys. Great spot. What burner is that you use? I don't need anymore burners 😂 just curious. Great video sir.
Cheers Martin👍 Bivy all the way if the weather works👍 That was an old Vango stove as I couldn't find where i put my Pocket Rocket. Its the one I used when first going wild camping and still works great though is about 3 times the size and weight of the Pocket Rocket😊
