This game is definitely not game of the year material because the story absolutely sucks a fat one.
Claim that they were showing a bunch of creativity in this game all you want, they weren't even trying to have a good story. It's not like you can't have one in a Mario game, they've done it before, but they never put in the effort with 2D Mario platformers.
Though I guess they don't want to waste people's time with dialogue between levels, or having the levels in any way connected to the plot of the story.

About Thousand Year Door, or Bowser's Inside Story, or Mario Odyssey, lots of people cared about the story quality.
Instead, they gave up all vestiges of character interactions in exchange for 90% of people playing Daisy and those annoying talking flowers that are mostly just the devs stroking themselves.

I agree, 2D Mario stories are never actually serious. But I really liked the change of pace of not just kidnapping Peach, but Bowser throwing a rock party. But like, they should've expanded on that somewhat - it was never explained why Bowser wanted to do that, and if anything makes me sad we ruined his badass party lol
Honestly, the random Gouki/Akuna pose at 03:20 is arguably just a nod to Nintendo randomly still having Yoshi do it in _Smash_ for the past 20 years.
Its crazy they havent used Metal Mario as a mechanic since M64. The skin has made a ton of appearances so the idea never felt like it dissappeared! Bringing it back for this game was brilliant

Without explaining too much, Brent mentioned on stream he and Nick had already beat the level and it was TOUGH. Nick especially struggled with it.
Well of course Nick struggled with it (I haven't seen it yet myself as I am going to get the game next week), he doesn't play video games!
@@RageChocobo Funny enough, Nick is probably the second best at the game from what I've seen. Vern noticeably struggled more than Nick on his streams, and Eevee is just straight up bad.
That final boss proves this is a rhythm game in disguise, and you cannot convince me otherwise.
It's hard for me to choose my favourite Wonder effect, but I think I'll go with the 'floating in space' one. I love the atmosphere of the levels it appears in, and especially when it pops up in the final level.
Also, if you were looking for a challenge from this game...let's just say, the Special World won't disappoint.
If I had to pick my favorite wonder event in the entire game, it's definitely Bowser's blazing beats
It really is a wonderful game, the name was spot on. Had a smile the whole time playing and while watching you play.

I love how rock music has become a core part of Bowser's character thanks to him being voiceed by Jack Black and having that one big mosh pit party scene at his castle in the Mario Movie. Really love that little detail there
Well to be fair, Bowser kinda had that rock motif even before with stuff like Mario strikers.
Yeah his music is associated with heavy metal and rock…his first and second boss theme in Mario 64 was heavy metal kinda…then they kinda stopped doing that…so glad that when jack black came along they kinda realized how perfect it fit bowser…Heck even his little spikey chain braclete type thing around his body associates himself as being the type of villian to associate with rock and metal
I really like most Bowser themes, I loved NSMB Wii's and Galaxy 2's orchestra and 3D World's jazz but the rock ones just hit so different. I still listen to Fury Bowser's theme and think "oh yeah, that's Bowser".

This world's boss currently has one of my main fav Bowser's themes, I was vibing the whole time!
Also the platform changes in the battle WERE the phases, so Bowser has 4 phases (Which I can agree they were short)
The title is also speaking facts, this game NEEDS to be nominated GOTY
The entire boss fight was a bop. It may be different from all the bros. games but this boss battle of bowser was an amazing way to end out this new adventure.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought of the thumbnail photo. Seeing them stance up got me hype and laughing at the same time.

This game is awesome. The only lower point is the bosses, which, to be fair, compared to other 2D mario games, are fine to good. But man, even keeping Bowser’s fight, it could have been so much more entertaining if it was more difficult. I really wish this game gets some DLC stages that really push the difficulty, because aside from a few stages, this game is fairly easy. Just give me a good boss fight in a mario platformer, Bowser was so close to it!
Having the metal cap in a electric level so you conduct the electricity is one of the most creative and fun uses of an old Mario power up I've ever seen!
I admit the final boss fight was really fun to play, but I expected much more from it... Like a second phase where he becomes giant or something. He literally built up power for the entirety of the game
Just like real rock concerts, it goes more into the stage and pyrotech than the performance.^^
The only Bad thing about the games are the bosses

I'm glad Brent got a kick out of High Voltage Gauntlet's Wonder effect, it's easily my favorite level in the entire game
Admittedly I'm maybe a _little_ biased because I *love* the Metal Cap and its theme, it's partly why the Silver and Gold Mario amiibo costumes are my favorite in Mario Maker 1, because when you have a Star with either of them on it plays the Metal Cap theme, and it had me pogging out of my mind when I first found that out
So no surprise the Wonder effect for HVG also had me pogging out of my mind, and I pogged harder when I realized it was a remix
You can really tell that they had fun making this game, and you can feel that fun too. It's never a dull moment, especially with those Wonder Flowers

Watching Brent play through it the first time really puts tears in my eyes, excited with everything from start to finish knowing every reference of each of the games. I'm glad I was able to play the game first then experience Brent's experience too. I felt the same way. Paid off to not watch any videos of super mario wonder before playing it.

Honestly this game was awesome and Brent needs all the lives he can get to 200% the game
I think what really helps the Bowser fight is what every good super villain should have, presentation! This boss should be by all accounts pretty boring especially when Bowser can spend so much time just not doing anything and waiting for you to hit him but you being on an actual stage the awesome music and jumping to the rhythm all add to the experience. Still personally wish there was a little more to the fight, maybe getting to fight a full body wonder Bowser but good ol' head and hands was still fun.

Next part yea I'm doing Special World, but I'm not 100% it, I got all the flagpoles, seeds, and 10 coins, I just didn't bother getting all the standees because it's annoying to do, at that point I'm just replaying a level with a coin magnet over and over again until I can buy it all lol

An absolutely wonderful game for sure, pun intended lol, but no game deserves GOTY over Baldur’s Gate 3. No offense to Mario Wonder or any other game released this year, but Baldur’s Gate 3 is by far the best game released this year, hands down with no competition. Larian Studios took 6 years to develop this master piece, and they should be rewarded for their 6 year long journey.
