Ty, i was drawing a blank on that for some reason, although i would argue that getting pecked causes petrification and, if petrified, getting swept by the tail feathers restores someone to their normal state. Could be wrong i guess.
@@hollowlord8548 pretty significant actually. A basilisk was, depending on the specific person writing it down, either a lizard or more rarely a snake, that killed people with its breath (some works change that to be turning to stone with a glance, but I've only seen that in modern works like Harry Potter or dungeons & dragons, and I think that may be a modern change inspired by the story of Medusa). A cockatrice, as stated, was more similar to a rooster, and in a lot of depictions turned people to stone via pecking rather than just via looking (I'm guessing that's also a variation between different sources. That's pretty common with mythology, it's rare for there to be one true version). A cockatrice was said to be born when a rooster laid an egg. And IIRC the way to destroy one was something about it hearing a rooster's call.
iirc, on wikipedia, the word 'basilisk' was actually a mistranslation of 'cockatrice' in some article, so the name stuck. the two terms are actually interchangeable! :D

I swept Reukra with a single pokemon: my starter. Imagine going on like "There is no such thing as a perfect pokemon; but there can be a perfect team", only to be solo'd by a mutant reptile _you_ created and the kid you gave it to a week ago.
I’ll give the game credit, it _does_ make a certain kind of sense that every Legendary has their own cult. Like, did the creator make 17 cults because it was historically accurate to Ancient Greece (every Greek god had their own secret cult where much of the mythology we know today comes from) or because it makes sense that groups worshiping what are the Pokémon equivalent of living gods would spring up over the years? Absolutely not, they gave every Legendary a cult because cults are evil and bad and crazy and bad Does that mean the idea is entirely without merit? No, it definitely could have been done in a less edgy way though. Like, maybe have the Shaymin cult do their absolute best to return nature to the world, whether that’s through planting forests and fields of flowers or by destroying metropolitan areas to expand nature’s influence, or have Darkrai’s cult spend all their time sleeping to try and experience nightmares in an effort to grow closer to their lord, or have Dialga’s cult all squabbling over which method of measuring time is the most effective and try to effectively speedrun life to “make as much of the time we have as we are able”, that sort of thing Just make it _interesting,_ having all of them be cartoonishly evil gets old fast
The game doesn't have 17 cults. It has 5 of them (+ ig you could count the Distortion people as another, but like, they're the only decent one narratively). It's mentioned there use to be 10 before the First Augur swept them with the crystal, but those previous cults are never described in detail. What it does have, is far too many 'players on the board' so to speak. You have the protagonist trio (MC, Damien and Nora), you have the 8 gym leaders, you have the 5 cults, you have Malde once he becomes a Deoxys, the Timeless and then the Distortion people. It does make for a long game with many boss fights (just from the main campaign alone, you get 6 Rival fights, 8 gyms leaders, 2 boss fights for the Abyssal, Infernal, Celestial and Darkrai Cults, 4 Taen fights for Perfection, and Nyx, for a grand total of 32 boss fights once you include the Elite 4+ Reukra), each of them pretty much happening in their own zone. Even Black&White which is famous for throwing Bianca and Cheren at you every time it feels like it only gets to 30 (with 12 rival fights, 5 N fights, 8 Gym leaders + E4, and the final Ghetsis fight, counting the starter fight tutorial as 2 whole boss fights. It's not like they didn't try, Persephone and Diana's backstory is complelling on paper, but they barely get 4 scenes to together because this game keeps rushing from plotpoint to plotpoint.
Delta Muk predicted: •Muk getting a new form prior to regional variants existing, one gen before they were introduced •A Pokemon eating another Pokemon (Cramorant) •A Pokemon made out of sand (Sandygast)
"I really want a pokemon that's like opposite types that don't make much sense. Kind of like grass/fire" *gen 9 releases* "Oh my gosh! I predicted scolvillain!" That's what i hear ya saying
And keep in mind, he played the MILD version (you can tell by the opening cutscene). Yes there is a different version that is more creepy and horror filled.
I think it does have the mild opening (pretty sure the dark one straight up says the augur is dead), but then goes into the dark version of the cult tutorial area (mild version, you get the DNA from an outfit lying around, and darkrai is just called by a machine). I might have played this game a bit too much.
Yes! I was just about to comment this but wanted to see if anyone else did first. They were a TCG thing from gen 3 (I think?) where a pokemon would have a different type than usual. It was just the type that was different though, the designs were still the same as usual. In the design sense, insurgence does predate gamefreak since they didn't do that until gen 7's regional forms. But yes, the idea of a "delta" pokemon that has a different typing is an old TCG mechanic.
this is actually kind of acknowledged in game- there was a pokemon tcg lore thing with the Holon region, which is where delta pokemon were appearing, and you can go there in the postgame of insurgence. There's a bunch of delta pokemon that aren't really in the main game there, and some of them are pretty cool, at least design wise. Aron, Mawile and Maractus are probably my favourites of the postgame deltas.
You know, this game gets a lot of crap for being edgy, but I genuinely do love it. The music is great, I love the regional designs, I LOVE side quests (main games please give me side quests), and the difficulty isn't too easy. Even with the plot being ridiculous and cheesy, I prefer a ridiculous plot that is involved than an almost non existent one. The endgame of scarlet/violet was by FAR my favorite part. I know a lot of people like pokemon as an almost battle simulator/puzzle boss rush, and I get that (I do love elite redux a lot), but I like when fan games lean into the rpg aspect more, and I wish the main games would too. Plus the pokemon follow you, come on.
Can I add how just, perfect the random npcs can be at times? One of them is just an astrophysicist who hates how lackluster the pokemon move gravity you cant not love this
This game really leads you to ask the most important questions in storytelling, keeping you on your toes, such as, "where the hell am I?" "What the hell am i doing?" and "what's going on?"
14:50 For those unaware, it seems like its a play on the mythical creature Cockatrice, which had the body of a dragon and the head of a rooster at times! It also had the the power to petrify any living creature with its breath!
@cosmorror3907 there's actually some disambiguation for both of those, some accounts can be attributed to either a basilisk or cockatrice depending on the legends! Definitely closely related!

Then a few years later, it finally fully released and i was absolutely ecstatic, hell, i even wrote some of the wiki pages for it. This game was so much of my pre-teen to late teen years, and holy hell did i never realize the story was the way it was. Still kinda sad that alpha never went to the entire separate region though, that part of the game is fun

This game is such a whiplash. Like you have actual nice quality sprites and obviously making a game that looks like pokemon is nothing to sneeze at, that's alot of work. But those edgy designs. And the tryhard writing. Like, a corrosive lake? And then cute little Shaymin comes and saves everyone? Also I guess the assassins just follow the rules of pokemon battle and don't try to actually assassinate things? It's adorable, like someone in their mid teens wrote this and somehow got actual developers to create this game for them. EDIT: Turns out it actually was written by teenagers. It explains so much and now I adore this even more.

First guess: "I reckon the kill count will be about 16..." Second guess after seeing the video run time: "Ohhhhh... 416" Edit: HOW THE FUCK DID WE NOT EXCEED 10?????
This reminds me of when i tried to do a nuzlocke of this game a couple years ago, despite having absolutely no experience with nuzlocking, it went terribly as you would expect, but it was fun! Shoutout to mario the azumarill, the pokemon i had that lasted the longest, absolute champ
Me and my brother have been trying to a randomized soul link of this game for a while (because there isn't any way we're beating the nuzlocke with the trainers having their original teams) and let me tell you, it is suffering incarnate. The randomizer isn't properly set up to randomize one type of pokemon into another type of pokemon so instead, the game just picks one random pokemon for every single encounter which means you can encounter literally every pokemon in the game on the first route... really wish that would've gotten fixed because you'd be surprised how many of these pokemon learn Dragon Rage at early levels. We've attempted this at least 50 times I would say and we have not even made it to the first gym yet because of that. I even tried doing a solo randomized nuzlocke at one point and yeah, pretty similar results, I had a few attempts that got past the first gym, only one attempt that got past the second gym but once you get past that initial roadblock, it becomes way easier as evidenced by my one attempt that got past the second gym ended up making it all the way to the Elite Four.
To be exact: Insurgence itself wasn't the first to feature Delta Pokémon. Zeta and Omicron (which were partly made by the same developpers) had them too, and if I'm not wrong, they're a reference to old TCG cards?
I question the mindset of the people who make these romhack stories. Someone seriously woke up and said, "Let's make a Pokemon game, but with cults." Not judging, I'm just REALLY curious about what inspired them...
Iirc there was a big wave of kids getting back into Pokemon at the tail end of gen 5/beginning of gen 6, so there were a lot of edgy pre-teens who were influencing this sort of stuff at the time (i know because i was one of them lol)
I mean with all these different legendary Pokemon who are each powerful enough to be seen as gods or being of worship, it honestly does make sense for there to be a few cults. Or would you tell me that people wouldn’t worship the gigantic whale who can flood continents and conceptually control water and the weather?
Is that not functionally the plot of the gen 3 and 4 games? You have these groups of people pledging allegiance to the destructive power of ancient gods. Put team Aqua in some black robes and bada bing you have cult.
You can tell this game was made before the pandemic solely because they called their new Pokémon forms Delta variants. Boy does that have a different meaning nowadays…
To be fair, deltas in the Pokémon context actually originated in the trading card game ages ago. They’re Pokémon from a place called the Holon region that have different types, I.E. electric type Horsea. Nothing else changes though, same design and all that.
Heck, probably would have been different if it came out after Sun and Moon. Pokemon with different designs and types being an unethical science experiment is even funnier after three generations of this being a normal part of the series.

iirc, on wikipedia, the word 'basilisk' was actually a mistranslation of 'cockatrice' in some article, so the name stuck. the two terms are actually interchangeable! :D
I've wiped beating this game from my memory because every 5 minutes I'd be like ''Oh Alpha got further than I ever did! Only to then get hit 5 seconds later with shit like ''Oh yeah the rock-friend, Rayquaza fight, Library!, Grass-Snorlax, Half-deoxys-dad!'' etc. What a fucking fever dream.

Gonna be that guy and point out Delta Species were a thing in the TCG before this game. This game even uses the icon they use in the TCG for them
Wait really? How did that work?
@@appledognugget2267delta species pokemon in the tcg were just normal looking Pokemon with a different type than they usually had. I don’t know if there was any specific way they had to be played, I was never into actually playing the game. I used to have a couple delta species cards, one of them was a steel type delcatty I think
I swept Reukra with a single pokemon: my starter.
Imagine going on like "There is no such thing as a perfect pokemon; but there can be a perfect team", only to be solo'd by a mutant reptile _you_ created and the kid you gave it to a week ago.
not to mention the mutant reptile you called a freak and assumed would die
I’ll give the game credit, it _does_ make a certain kind of sense that every Legendary has their own cult. Like, did the creator make 17 cults because it was historically accurate to Ancient Greece (every Greek god had their own secret cult where much of the mythology we know today comes from) or because it makes sense that groups worshiping what are the Pokémon equivalent of living gods would spring up over the years? Absolutely not, they gave every Legendary a cult because cults are evil and bad and crazy and bad
Does that mean the idea is entirely without merit? No, it definitely could have been done in a less edgy way though. Like, maybe have the Shaymin cult do their absolute best to return nature to the world, whether that’s through planting forests and fields of flowers or by destroying metropolitan areas to expand nature’s influence, or have Darkrai’s cult spend all their time sleeping to try and experience nightmares in an effort to grow closer to their lord, or have Dialga’s cult all squabbling over which method of measuring time is the most effective and try to effectively speedrun life to “make as much of the time we have as we are able”, that sort of thing
Just make it _interesting,_ having all of them be cartoonishly evil gets old fast
See, that would make them *religions*, not *cults*. *Cults* are, in fact, evil and bad and crazy and bad.
It's not like they didn't try, Persephone and Diana's backstory is complelling on paper, but they barely get 4 scenes to together because this game keeps rushing from plotpoint to plotpoint.

yes

I might have played this game a bit too much.
fun fact: Delta Species pokemon originated with the TCG
Oohhh, I knew the term was familiar! Funny how the fangame borrowed a mechanic of TCG and accidentally predicted a future thing from the games
Yeah, i remember having an Electric Dragonite card back in the day
this is actually kind of acknowledged in game- there was a pokemon tcg lore thing with the Holon region, which is where delta pokemon were appearing, and you can go there in the postgame of insurgence.
There's a bunch of delta pokemon that aren't really in the main game there, and some of them are pretty cool, at least design wise. Aron, Mawile and Maractus are probably my favourites of the postgame deltas.
I had a rock /steel blastoise show up in my collection one day and just stared, convinced it was a fake😂

@@moodfox2988it can be either/or in some tellings! Breath or gaze, but I also equate a petrifying gaze more to Medusa than a cockatrice!

also this game was started when the devs were teens that's why it's so edgy but i love it for that.

I've always wanted Alpharad to play a Shin Megami Tensei game!
This reminds me of when i tried to do a nuzlocke of this game a couple years ago, despite having absolutely no experience with nuzlocking, it went terribly as you would expect, but it was fun!
Shoutout to mario the azumarill, the pokemon i had that lasted the longest, absolute champ
Proud of your mario!!!
This game gives us the answer Ash Ketchum does not age because he is one of the timeless
12:50 using the mail feature to send threats to the player is such a funny and clever use of something that never made it outside the DS games
To be exact: Insurgence itself wasn't the first to feature Delta Pokémon. Zeta and Omicron (which were partly made by the same developpers) had them too, and if I'm not wrong, they're a reference to old TCG cards?
The sheer genius of using Shadow The Hedgehog OST for most of the video to show how edgy this romhack is.
"Hey it's been a while, I wonder Alpharad is doing..."
Proceeds to watch a stream where he praises cults and becomes an edgelord.
18:49 Now I want to casually say “loser gets used for the ritual” in any competitive context.
Reason why this game is dark---It has Darkrai and you get to battle Satan, no questions ask.
Holy shit a feature length Alpharad video, we’re eating good today!
They had to make up for that 40 minute ad from the other day
I question the mindset of the people who make these romhack stories.

To be fair, deltas in the Pokémon context actually originated in the trading card game ages ago. They’re Pokémon from a place called the Holon region that have different types, I.E. electric type Horsea. Nothing else changes though, same design and all that.
