By this point everyone has been beaten down and there is raw emotions coming from all the characters. I can understand why the audience laughed when he entered if they are not familiar with the story. I had the privilege of sound designing for Cabernet at Kent State University and I loved being in the theatre every night mixing this song live being sang by a great actor and singer. Make no mistake this is a very serious scene and he sings with a great deal of pain.
I saw the show many years ago at the old Studio 54. I had just had my first Broadway audition and that night before I came back to Canada, I went to see the show. Raul had just taken over Emcee and the gal passing out the Cabaret hand flyers at the TKTS booth in Times Square said not to miss it. It was the first time since Alan left, that someone who took over the role could actually do it justice. I still remember how haunted I was when Raul came out and sang this. When the show ended, I had to sit for a few miniutes before I could get out of my seat. It was one of those memories that will last my lifetime.
beautiful story. this is always the version that plays in my head when i think of this song. i envy anyone who got to see this live, but also grateful to hear it here 💐
How many other Emcee actors were there? I thought it was Alan and Raul and then it closed. Sorry for my ignorance, these are just the only two performances in this production I've heard about.
@@elphbwckd212Quite a few people played emcee in this production actually. Michael C. Hall, Raúl Esparza, Neil Patrick Harris, Adam Pascal, Jon Secada, and John Stamos all played emcee in the 1998 production
You're also touching on the universal fight against the dying of the light. We're passing through this life, losing our beauty and moments of opportunity, and there's nothing we can do. ZOOM! "What was that?", "That was your life, mate."
His facial expressions and mannerisms seem odd here but they are not meant to be seen with a telescopic lens. They are meant to be seen from the center of the audience.
@TheNadieboo It's a warning ( as Sally particularly) not to expect too much commitment- this should come as no surprise to anyone who has known her for 5 minutes, of course. But I guess it also has wider reference to a time when maybe alot of people thought they'd better hungrily and greedily, as it were, experience a lot of things quickly before the opportunities vanished with the new political times.
Brian Eduardo It's really odd because it's such a serious scene that doesn't seem all that long ago. Maybe crowds have changed dramatically in the last 10 or so years...
Yes it was an amazing vocal performance...i love raul in so many things he does...but he dosent suit the EmCee, his voice is far too rich...Allan Cumming is the only EmCee for me.. Raul is the best Bobby by far and an awesome George in Sunday!
I love how everyone laughs when he enters, expecting to be entertained, then he does such a chilling, heart wrenching performance. Wow!

"Haunting" is the perfect word. For the voice, the lyrics and the performance. I thank you much for this posting.
We need a David Lynch movie version of Cabaret with Raúl as Emcee.
Raul + Jon Pedersen are my faves of all faves when it comes to Emcees : )
I wish he got more recognition for this role. He was really good!
HE CAN SING ANYTHING !!! And it's beyond the voice quality: he's a PERFORMER !!!
God he is the PERFECT Emcee. Wow.
His voice always makes me emotional.
it's a shame that there is no time for applause at all... this was amazing!!!! bone chilling!
he looks so eerie, like he's channeling a blue glow.
fantastic performance.
It's like the best Francis Bacon painting .. a punch to the gut and oh so beautiful.
Powerful songs have always been his best performances and this is definitely no exception. Beautiful.
Goosebumps.
2:24 - 2:35 is literally my favorite part
I LOVE that man... omg... his voice can be so haunting when he wants it to be.
THank u for this Vid!!!

sooo beautiful!
Thank you so much for posting this and all the Raúl vids. It is much appreciated.
just amazing!
i love this sooo much
Okay, what were they LAUGHING at?! Did Gina do a take to the audience or was it because Raúl was in a dress?!
I assume it was the latter.
YES!!!!!! SO GOOD!
I agree completely.
His facial expressions and mannerisms seem odd here but they are not meant to be seen with a telescopic lens. They are meant to be seen from the center of the audience.
A-MAZ-ING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree - with mosshart21 - audiences often nervous particularly about cross-dressing men... pity video not clearer.... lovely vocal

nice observation ..... but not so sure... be happy
0:20 !!
I'll give you my rendition when I'm finished. It will blow your minds...
