This song is a scream of apathy and it’s the most beautiful thing ever - the repetition of the words “I don’t care” also really show how much he does care
Saw his final performance of the original revival at Studio 54. To this day it remains the single most mesmerizing performance I have EVER seen. I couldn’t take my eyes off him the entire show. Incredible experience, his talent is beyond extraordinary.
@@Dancingwolf325 oh i completely agree .. in an interview alan asked a producer if he ever got tired of putting Cabaret on and when the producer said no alan said he never got tired of it either :)) and that was so comforting :)
The thing people don’t realize is that the characters were supposed to be bad performers. And the EMOTION here is almost heartbreaking. I’d rather emotion over pretty. ❤❤❤
I feel like Emcee is free to be a good singer since he's supposed to be charming the audience into a trap. Sally is definitely meant to be mediocre/bad though
This man and the entire Cabaret recording kept me here when I was a young queer kid. My life was fucked up, but I had my Cabaret cast recording. That was enough. Auditioning for this musical tonight. My favorite role.
1:54 .. never tell me this man can’t sing .. this is literally the most heartbreaking thing i’ve heard somebody sing before .. he has to say that he doesn’t care if he’s left .. he just has to .. he has no other choice .. but we can’t tell if he had the choice or not if he would ask them to stay or not because he doesn’t have a choice to .. so gutwretchingly heartbreaking and beautiful .. i love him and this song more than words can explain
The way he desperately reaches out during the “if we touch” and slowly forces himself to retreat his hand during the “I don’t care.” Ugh. The details 2:02
I have always interpreted the Emcee as the human representation of Germany and Berlin through the point of view of people who didn't support the jews and the countries transition in to the Nazi regime
Ah, dont think so. In the 1993 filmed revival-London UK Donmar(?) Production, the ending he is wearing the inmate pajamas, and in the production, there are 3 emblems on his shirt. Star of David-double yellow trangles-the pink triangle-queer-and the red one is for communist. They decided to drop the comunist one when the show opened on Broadway, because most Americans had no idea what it symbolised and confused the audeince.
I think he's both a character and a representation but not so much of germany and more of the diffrent view points presented through the other characters in the musical.
I never get tired of this song, regardless of the meaning it has. Mr. Cumming has a wonderful voice and his acting skills make me jealous >.< I hope to someday be half as good a performer as he is. :)
Singing this song for an open mic at my school next week. Its my favourite song from Cabaret and I just hope that I can do it the justice it deserves:)
Yes he is..completely mesmerizing, captivating, inticing and menacing in this role..with charm and dark humor thrown in, so the ending is a horrifying gut punch. Alan Cumming is magnificent.
Excellent interpretation. I thought of this song when Melania purposefully wore her "I don't care, do u?" jacket in about 2018, to mock victims in camps.
Hola. Gracias
Ese papel es sumamente demandsnte . Y desgastante . Decirle a tu alrededor . Esposa. Novia. Familia..que te sentís cansado y molesto . Eso es .. stress.😱🧐😭
The makeup for Emcee includes painted on bruises and scrapes/scratches, like most of the characters who work in the club. I thought they were tattoos but then I remembered the other productions and what the real Cabaret crowd did. They were generally equal rights activists and got caught in or participated in riots and had more than a few bruises. Cabaret performers were also targeted and beat up by people who supported the Nazi party, because they didn't fit in with that kind of crowd. Many Cabaret artists died concentration camps. I suggest you watch the documentary Alan Cumming made of the the real Cabaret of that time, "The Real Cabaret." Plus the other half of being a Cabaret performer can give you bruises/scratches... because those are, um...workplace injuries.
LaNera Luna Those could be either painted tattoos or really his, though. I don't know if he has any. My guess is that its part of the costume, you never know.
'I dont care' he said, showcasing the most care possible with his voice.

i am currently obsessed with how this man performs.

I think, if given the chance, he would definitely love to play emcee again.
you are so incredibly lucky to have seen his performance :)

I saw the final performance in 2015, Sienna Miller as Sally, same result.

@@belial13lailebOh my god! I just saw the video of Mason singing this! They were amazing! So raw and powerful.
This performance is incredible. So beautiful. Alan Cumming IS the Emcee.
Alan is perfect in this role.

Easily my favorite song in the show.

Because of this man I can’t picture Nightcrawler without his face. Not that I’m complaining, I bet he looked fab.
Amazing talent, saw Alan live on Broadway in the late 90’… resonates now….

Does anyone know where this was performed? maybe an awards show like the Tonys?
Drama Desks in 98 I think
Does anybody remember who played the Emcee when Molly Ringwald was at Studio 54? Was it Cummings?
