They delayed the official launch so that reviewers compare Zen 5 to _patched_ 14th gen Intel CPUs, which will likely be slower than unpatched ones. The fact that they hadn't even released official prices means this wasn't a last-minute decision, they were waiting for Intel to make a move (announcing the microcode patch).
Plus they get to say: "See, we're a very responsible company that won't hesitate to recall every CPU out there that doesn't meet our quality standards (unlike _certain people,_ nudge-nudge), and we'll have it all fixed in less than two weeks."

Its not the end of the world. You people remind me of listening to my boomer grandparents talk about how they could get a bag of groceries and fill their gas tank for ten bucks.

@@EloyBushida I have had grandparents that did the same thing and didn't account for inflation when they discussed prices from the old days. I will admit though that the $200 price difference you suggest is a bit on the generous side.. an X70 class card (RTX 4070 for reference) cost $550 in 2024 dollars. an X70 class card (GTX 970 for reference) cost $329 in 2014 dollars. That a 67% difference (not accounting yet for inflation). When inflation is accounted for we find that $1 in 2014 is worth $1.33 in 2024. Inflation accounts for about only 50% of the price hike that is observed.

I bought it over a year ago with nice discount for ~250€ less than 4070ti, a direct competitor, was priced back then.
The issue was that 12gb of vram was deal breaker for such massive spending on GPU, while it was way worse behaving on my 32:9 Superultrawide monitor for all non-RT games, even with DLSS.

However, assuming that your system isn't too slow or just too small to accommodate an RX 6800, even the most basic models of RX 6800 are of better build quality than the cheaper models of RX 6700 XT or 6750 XT, and also considering that it has 33% more vram in addition to significantly more computer power, an additional 50 USD is likely well worth it, and I'd say that the 6800 is actually likely to be a better value, but I think that will also come down to exactly what models are available as well. Pricing and availability can fluctuate a fair bit, and can vary a lot by region.
For a new system, the extra 50 USD to get the RX 6800 would be well worth it if you can possibly afford it, imo. The low memory bandwidth of the 4060 ti can potentially be an issue, but it's actually very rare, and the memory bandwidth isn't as big of an issue as the lack of compute power, or the very small 8GB vram capacity of the cheaper model. 16GB is probably a bit excessive for that level of compute power, but having more than 8GB is definitely very useful, and there will probably eventually be some games where having more than 12GB could actually be useful with the 4060 ti.
The 16GB model is a very slow card for the price, but, if you have very high electricity prices and/or if you also often play games in a hot, poorly ventilated room, and if you tend to play long hours, then the 16GB 4060 ti could end up saving you a lot of money in the long term and actually make back all of the money you could have saved by getting something like an RX 6800 or RX 6750 XT (and you should undervolt it whenever you're not playing demanding games to get the power usage down even lower).
The 16GB 4060 ti can also be a good low-end workstation card for some specific types of workloads.
It would have made a lot of sense if they had just made one 12GB desktop model of the 4060 ti, but that would have required making a completely different GPU die than the laptop version, which would have cost more money, and it probably would have also needed a 192-bit bus, which would have also cost more money. With the laptop version of the 4060 ti, it is more practical and less of a problem to have only 8GB of memory, given that the GPU runs a lot slower on the laptop variant and thus has less compute power, and likely runs games on a much smaller screen, so turning down the texture quality or the rendering resolution is less likely to actually hurt the subjective image quality as much, though even on the laptop variant, more vram still would have been useful and nice to have.

The 7900 GRE vs 7800 XT comparison is very misleading. The GRE is 12% more expensive for a 9% uplift in performance, but that's at stock settings where it's very limited. An overclock of 15% to its memory only (which is what TechPowerUp achieived with their sample) results in a 14.9% increase to its performance in a synthetic benchmark. In your 4K 12 game average that results in a 73 FPS average, putting it over the 4070 Ti Super and right under the 7900 XT

    • @wfb.subtraktor311

HUB dont test overclocking. The performance gained from an overclock is not guaranteed and therefore a serious reviewer would never use it as a point of comparison. Of course, I would also get a GRE over a 7800 xt but if AMD wanted to make the card look better they should have just shipped it with higher memory.
      Edit: speeds, memory speeds.

9 months ago I won an auction for a Liquid Devil 6800 XT for $416. The performance per dollar is incredible. Have not had one problem, and with an UV/OC the rasterization performance is identical to the 4070 Super, a card with less VRAM and priced 35% higher (+$245) when I bought the 6800 XT. I almost always question my CPU/GPU choices after buying, but this 6800 XT has become a rare case when I regret nothing and would 100% repeat my decision.
I want nVidia and AMD to know I voted against both of them with my wallet. RDNA3 was also a poor value proposition compared with used RDNA2 GPUs. Not only did a secondhand factory water cooled 6800 XT cost me nearly $100 less than a new 7800 XT, it's also the faster card.

Still rocking my 3070, and it does a pretty good job on every game I throw at it. I might upgrade to the 4070 Ti Super when the 50 series is released and the 40 series prices go down a bit.

the XTX is a nothing burger of the GPU world it uses more power than a 4090 and performs 5-10% in raster who cares it's a dogsh*t GPU just get a 4080 or 4090 if you are spend over 1k simple.

how can you possibly recommend the 4070 super with 12gb of vram, when your testing showed that 12gb is already sometimes not enough for 1080p ultra when using features like RT and frame gen, for which the customer is paying a premium?

    • @Efsaaneh
      @Efsaaneh 2 месяца назад +3

To be COMPLETELY fair, when using a card with alot of vram games will allocate as much as they want. So a 12+ allocation on a 24gb card isn't exactly accurate. Besides, ue5 and console generation will not change for a long time and so far I've not seen a properly optimized game that breaks the 4070S, so it will probably be fine for some years
