I am Just about to undertake the repointing of the side of my house, so I’ve been trawling through RUclips videos & yours is the best that I have seen so far I don’t feel the need to carry on looking at any more, thanks for taking the time to make the video & post it 👍
That was super helpful, thank you. Having just been quoted £4k+ to sort my garden walls out and the fact I'm retired I've decided to have a go myself. This is by far the most informative and helpful video I've seen on the 'net. Thanks again and hopefully I can replicate your skill, to some level at least!!
Your tutorial is very clear, concise, informative & timely .. I love that you don't ramble on about inconsequentials ... Thank you ... I prefer the 2nd method . . .
Great video, still helping people out in 2024! Hopefully I can adapt the techniques and tips you've shared to repoint some of the joints of my stone wall effect walls. So thanks thanks again for this excellent video! 👍
Been building all my life that’s a long time 🤣 when I was 17 newish to building sites I’d not taken any lunch there was 4 Sikhs there they all shared there lunch with me have never forgotten that kind response from them 😁👍🏻🇬🇧
This is perfect. Thank you. Now I can tell what a horrible job the previous person did pointing the brick on our renovated home. I definitely have the confidence to do this myself because of your video.
This is the first video I've seen on pointing and 100% the best!!! Thanks for your clear and concise explanations. Just need to get myself into gear and try one of the methods out. 👍🏼
Thank you for the knowledge and for the confidence to carry on. As we have been wrapping up the exterior veneer brick on our new house, there has been a growing sense of urgency around how to do a good job of mortaring the thousands upon thousands of joints. Thanks to you, success is within reach. By the way, you have a terrific screen presence.
Nice to see pointing done correctly I have employed so-called builders to do pointing for me over the years and not one of them were able to point properly. They will not clean out the joints and that is a must. They have morter all over the bricks. I end up doing the job myself which stops me from getting on with my work. There is a big shortage of skilled workers now, any Tom Dick or Harry can set themselves up as builders.
Thank you very much for your comment! You're right and I'm actually a carpenter myself and the only reason I started pointed was because I had been let down. I'm glad I did it in the end because it means I've learnt another skill. Glad to hear that you also got stuck in and gave it a go 👍
I have been a pointer for 40 years. When I learned , apprentices hawked the mortar in but the goal was to graduate to the jointer method (much cleaner) In America we have pointing irons Narrow offset trowel ranging from 1/4” to 1” that we use like the jointer by selecting a tool slightly smaller than the joint ( cleanest method of all) but required following with a jointer for a concave joint. By far the most common in the USA. For me the gun was the messiest( most mortar on the face of the brick) but admittedly that might have been strictly operator error. Can’t teach an old dog new tricks 😂Having said this, everything in this video is very good information.and nothing is “ wrong” The best pointing video I have seen.
My builder did a horrible job of repairing small areas on my archway, so I’m checking in to do a better job using your video. Thank you Tibby, you’ve explained this beautifully! The last method looks to be the one for me.
Excellent instructional work. Presented really clearly and nicely paced and so easy to follow. Loads of detail as to what is required. I'm now definitely not going to point the house myself! 😊
Good vid tibby I used the hawk method, found it pretty easy and fastest ,like your mixing bowl ,had trouble raking at first till I got the proper blade for the grinder ,much dust but flew through ,wish I had seen this post before I did mine, had some wide joints to fill so had to get the 3/4 copper pipe out,did most of what you did apart from the plastersizer which I will use if I do any more ,getting old 74 ,gives good satisfaction when it's done, live long
I have been watching videos trying to learn what I need to do before I tackle my brickwork, and I think I have found a new passion. Depending on how mine goes I may try to make some extra money doing this on the side.
I need to repair a small wall in the garden by the patio 4 bricks high. The mortar has cracked and fallen out and we have a baby shower coming up and I have to deal with the wall. Never done this and it was a mystery too me. I searched all over for instructions and now you have solved it and I feel confident I can do this. Thanks so so much. I liked it and subscribed as a result….cheers Tibby.
found this very helpful been looking at a wall for a good time now . I've now bought a cement gun and I will be looking forward to trying out my new challenge Well done for this video 👍
I have just repointed the top quarter of a gable end using the same mortar gun and it was so much faster than traditional methods. This is a great video, thank you.
That's great to know and be careful up there. I'm glad our video helped. The mortar gun isn't for everyone, but I find it working a treat when the mix is done right 👍
Yes, the mix was exactly as you explained, slightly wetter than normal. I found stopping pumping as soon as there was some resistance was the best method for preventing blockage and it made it easy to tap out back into the bucket where I just mixed it back in. @@TibbySingh
Great video very clear explanation! I've been pointing for years the old way with the trowel and jointer, and now I think I will by a pointing gun, that looks a lot easier and less time consuming!
Tibby Thanks for the clear explanation/ tutorial I'm about to undertake some pointing on my old victorian terrace. I'm using lime mortar and dreading it but this has definitely helped me get it clear in my mind as to what technique to use. Love the tip about using a wheel brace. 👍🏻
Concrete Mason here, great video bro!!!! Love motor gun. Whenever I do tuckpionting job, speed of job is important. Right after the quality. So I think this would be fastest way. I use motor bag works great also..
Thanks Tibby your explanation and demonstration of each application method is exceptional! I don’t think I did too bad for a girl, considering I’ve only just found your demonstration now! Mix spot on. Thank you😊
Absolutely brilliant video Tibby and perfectly narrated :-) I have some walls to repoint and I am a complete novice, I have tried and tried with the mortar gun but always end up throwing it across the garden ! haha, always seem to get the mixture so that is comes out of the gun way too wet and get 4 or 5 pumps then blocks grrrrr but it would be so awesome if i could get it to work for me purely because it is so much quicker, so I end up resorting to the trowel, the brick jointer looks really cool I will get one of those for the next time the mortar gun goes across the garden :-) Thankyou for making this video :-)
Excellent Tibby... really enjoyed this very instructional video. Trowel and Pointer for me I think, but I did buy a 'Pusher' don't know its proper name, it's like a very thin trowel, same width of the beds and perps , so use a hawk and push the mortar in off the hawk, the hawk being lined up with the beds just like the trowel is. Thanks for this
That's a solid wall Tibby. You can see that by the way the bricks on some courses are fixed lengthways into the wall. So it was probably built with lime. It looks old enough. You're a lovely bloke and the video is very informative and you've got some good style there. However (and you know what that means), it would've benefited more from a lime mortar and not cement. Jus sayin bruv. Thanks for the vid.
Thanks Tibby! I'm trying my first pointing tomorrow on an old breeze block stables. New pointing tools ordered, video watched and I'm ready to go! Easy to understand explanation and demonstration. I'm a 68 yr old female with a can do attitude! Thanks again! 😊
Tibby, I think your presentation style is good, but I have to say that it is a great shame that you used cement instead of lime. Lime looks better and functions better. Why not do another presentation using a lime option in a part 2 video?
Love the hawk method I sort of just stumbled upon that but I use a wooden float instead of the hawk as it was all I found in the basement! But I like the fact it’s rectangular as I was repointing a very old and uneven wall and I can put the long side of the board against the wall for even bits and use the short side when it gets really bumpy. 👍
That's great to hear and it sounds like your wooden float is effective. Good idea to use the long side for the straight surface and then short side for the uneven surface 👍
Legend, thanks for this how to...i tried to point about a year ago, total mess...used your brick jointer method to push in the cement of a trowel, very pleased with the result..thanks

To prevent your mortar from drying to fast I might suggest lightly spraying the joints prior to pointing.
