It really is underrated. I just got one years after it was released. So many amazing functions.

I preordered mine back in the day and never regretted it. I think most complains about the missing right stick could have been avoided if they had enabled "Edge Spin Speed" by default in most of the presets. What this does is to continue to move in a direction when you reach the edge of the touchpad which is great for rotating the camera in third person games without sacrificing the precision of the touchpad when aiming.
I still use my steam controller for almost all games (except multiplayer shooter and more difficult first person shooter) and couldn't imagine going back to a XBox controller.

There are several fundamental problems with Steam Input that even affect other controllers. The XInput emulation is objectively wrong and does not perform proper axis interpolation. Also, the trackball emulation is laggy. I have had much more use for the Steam Controller using third party mappers. I can use it to play almost any game. The Steam Controller was a good idea that Valve failed to make work.

BROOOO, so glad to hear someone finally say it! I was one of the OG supporters of the SC. I have a ton of tutorials on how to use the configuration software to tweak every last function and get the best out of everything -- though it's all the old, pre-Deck interface so you might have to dig through different menus to get to stuff.
Don't sleep on the left touchpad for movement though. I heard you call it "the dpad" but it's so much more than that.

I have 2 I bought back at Xmas time for my sons as a last ditch idea and neither are interested at all ( still brand new in the boxes lol) so I now have my 1st game pc at 53 yrs old im long time console guy from the atari 2600 to current. I'm horrible with key n mouse so I'm opening one of these up. Any advice how to start lol, ( sounds a bit complicated for a zero experience on like myself. Saw in your reply you had a tutorial or something, how could I bother ya to find that. Don't laugh , I paid 100 bucks a peice for these and past return window so I might as well use one. I'm so inexperienced I didn't even know these were an old item lol, I thought it was new. Any help appreciated

Its absurdly underrated. Easily the best pc gamepad to ever be made... And it got absolutely shat on, because its just familiar enough to a regular gamepad that the differences are too different and people didnt want to spend the time to learn both the software and the muscle memory for it.
I have some tutorials on my channel, as well as some gameplay footage. Not to toot my own horn too much, but I'm one of the og power users of it.
I see critical input already commented. Another up and coming channel is Double Jump Punch.
I'm gonna go against the grain of everyone though and say that a Deck Controller and a Steam Controller 2 should be different controllers that both exist. Cause once you really adapt to the full trackpad experience, every other controller in existence feels blunt and imprecise - even when the sticks arent drifting - no matter the task at hand. So, Deck Controller for the "normies" (no offense intended), and Steam Controller 2 for the unadulterated trackpad experience.

they need to bring back the possibility to customize the big picture navigation layout, like we could on the old os BPM.
I only used my track pads for navigation and editing, which was super fast and increased the life expectancy of my controller

We do really need a Steam Controller 2. The Steam Deck layout solves those issues I had with the Steam Controller (which I still use to this day). But it makes it harder to go back to the Steam Controller personally. I would probably use the Steam Deck docked more often on the TV if I had an SC2.
I don't think a majority of reviewers gave it much of a chance back when it launched. I have to wonder how much of that was because of the popular narrative around the Steam Machines in general which was: "Who are these meant for?". Well, the Steam Controller was designed specifically to solve a problem with the Steam Machines. How do you bring PC games to the living room without a mouse and keyboard? So its start and end were attached to the Steam Machines. When they failed, the Steam Controller seemed to cease to have a purpose. Add in that stupid lawsuit over the back bumpers and it pretty much sealed its fate.
While it lives on with the Steam Deck, I would say that as a device and unlike the Steam Machines, nobody is asking who it is meant for because the answer is obvious. The question is whether or not Valve will explore outside of handhelds and VR again in the near future as SteamOS continues to mature and grow. It is going to be interesting to see where everything that they started all those years ago will head from here.

Valve completely botched the steam controller launch. They had no instructions on how to use it and it's default profile was copying the xbox controller. Complete utter fail.
The controller was suppose to be used for mouse and keyboard centric games, both track pads were suppose to replace the typical 2 thumbsticks and the gyro was suppose to help you aim. But no-one knew that because valve had no instructions lol. It took the small dedicated community to figure it out but by then it was too late. Such a fail and it's completely valve's fault.

With Windows 10 going out of support in 2025 and leaving PCs with CPUs as recent as 2017 unable to move on to Windows 11, there's going to be a decent chunk of people with Ivy Bridge - Kaby Lake i7s stranded on an unsecure Windows 10. I'm one such person, on a Skylake i5 and RX480 that I'm going to keep trucking with until games I wanna play become too demanding. I'm pivoting to Linux entirely in 2025 regardless of what happens, and I understand that any other version of Linux would be fine as they all benefit from the improvements to Proton, but a desktop PC version of SteamOS 3.x+ would help streamline GPU tweaking on Linux without having to rely on the terminal.
With a PC launch of SteamOS 3.x+, I think Valve would have a decent excuse to introduce a Steam Controller 2, and for marketing's sake, advertise it for Steam Deck users who dock their unit.

@@GloriousKev I've been using the SC since 2017 and got a second one in 2019 when valve had the clearance sale. It took me until 2019 to go all trackpad trust when i say force yourself like @fartmachine5000 (lol) said to. The amount of control you will have is hard to decribe and yes you can use it for most games comfortably. I've played battlefield, mortal shell, titanfall2 and ryse on sc and deck all trackpad i cant go back. We need a sc 2 valve plz and thk you.

That is one major game changer. Using left touchpad for movement is much more comfortable than stick. I could not make the switch when using Steam Input though. Need third party mappers to improve controller responsiveness.

I use it as my daily driver. The only games where imo it doesn't work well are things like fighters and NBA 2k specifically. it works really well for 3rd person action games, side scrollers, diablo, indies, its okay for fps games but i still prefer keyboard and mouse there. Id say try it out and see what works for you.

@@GloriousKev been playing a lot of death stranding. I might try it in there but I may be only using this one for those typical PC games that can only barely work with an Xbox controller. Kids whining about it don't make sense. I only find it odd how loud it actually is. Curious about gfn with shield TV paired with this controller. I have a steam deck and this was always on my mind since I bought it.

@@GloriousKev Be wary of eBay listings though. I bought a spare SC in 2020 and in September 2023 it developed an unresolvable issue in which any input on the left trigger creates an equal eastward input on the joystick (a specific defect that is concerningly common on PlayStation/Xbox pads). Going in and cleaning all tracings on the board and blasting the joystick mechanism with compressed air weren't enough; salvaging the spare is (hopefully only) going to require unsoldering the joystick mechanism and soldering on an xbox one joystick mechanism, which is beyond my current capabilities. If that doesn't do it, then the spare I dropped $60 on will become a paperweight.
That said, my main SC I bought in 2016 is still holding up very well. Though it'll soon be time for me to replace its joystick cap with the compatible 8bitdo SN30 joystick cap I bought for it - while the stock stick hasn't visibly worn down much, I can feel rubber shavings generating with each play session

Valve botched the Steam Controller big time. Such a missed opportunity. Tbf, I have several problems with the Steam Input mapper that also affect the DS4 and DualSense; it probably would make me dislike the Steam Deck if I had one. I still use my Steam Controller pretty often even though my controller is a bit busted now; left touchpad click and left grip button don't work well anymore.

Having a DualDense and a SC, I can tell you, the SC is still the better alternative... But in all fairness, the DualSense Edge is the only controller that made me reconsider the SC (and only because of the additional FN buttons, making is the only controller that can map 1:1 bindings from the Steam Deck).
