      @whereisvanuatu ,that would be the Okapi Fusion. It measures 36 mm across, but wears about 2 mm larger due to its shape. Stay tuned for my review of it and its bigger GMT brother.

      The Okapi family is the most appealing to me (appealing = can't wait to get my hands on it), but all watches are very original and I hope they are very successful! A breath of fresh air in terms of design originality.

    Now that we've talked about Kevin, we can focus back on the watches! The elephant in the room is that unusual rounded diamond diak shape. Because it seems to serve no clear purpose other than to complicate the design, it is a bold original yet odd aesthetic choice you will likely either connect with or not. Having seen several of Kevin's designs come by on a FB group, I am pretty confident that for me that connection has not been so easy coming. Across these models (it's good to have a pipeline, but 6 is very ambitious and while it is almost peculiar just how many prototypes and how much time has gone in, I think lessons with hopefully a successfully first release can be carried over and still lead to perhaps greater focus in realising the final subsequent designs) there are several things that stand out. The bracelet integration on the artefact is one. However, for me, the acenturine dial isn't the best match for the watch. The Okapi is probably the best case shape to match with the dial shape. There is a certain congruency between these two elements that works on that watch. The Okapi examples also show the kind of dial and handset that work well with the setup. The bracelet constructing and prominent brushed cases seam to be a commonality between the Rymd, Monument and Dream chaser. The greedy person in me would like to see Kevin take all of these strong points to distill and blend them into a single watch design impossible to ignore. Having said that, on the same FB group I have seen more immediately impressive and likable takes on the Artefact, which I think is perhaps the most accessible and iconic of the 6, that make Saturdays launch something to look forward to. With so much variety across so many protoypes and so many future releases planned, Kevin is definitely a man with a vision and an asset to the community. I also think it woukd be smart to launch one and then take time to reflect and seek focus, making hard decisions. I'll wait for the reviews to see if any of these are already convincing enough for me. Yet, it could be that because I need convincing on the merits of the rounded diamond dial that a true connection to these designs may not happen for me.

    • @themicrobrandexpert
      @themicrobrandexpert  6 месяцев назад +1

      Where do I start? 😂
      1. The only watch that will be launched this coming Saturday is the Artefact. The other 5 models are part of a 5-slot-special reward on the KS campaign. If things work out well with the Artefact, Okapi is next in line for an Autumn KS campaign, followed by the rest next year.
      2. I agree with pretty much everything you said about the Artefact and tomorrow's review will touch on that. I would argue that the Artefact works better than the Okapi with the squircle as it's very nicely incorporated into the traditional circular form of the base.
      3. There are refinements planned for the other models as we speak
      4. This particular version of the Artefact is let down subjectively by the dial colour combo.
      5. An interesting take is that, while initially attracted more by the Artefact and the Okapi, I ended up enjoying the more extreme Rymd. Still, my favourite is the hopefully-upcoming-soon Sculpture which might be the most unusual construction.

    • @benjaminvis
      @benjaminvis 6 месяцев назад

      @@themicrobrandexpert and that sculpture is one we don't get to see? Aaargh! ;-) Kevin clearly is prolific. With the unusual shapes and cases I think, regrettably, convincing and choosing well may likely happen in person with much less doubt. That may hold the brand back on such an unusual aesthetic path. What I like about the Okapi is how the case looks to have been hewn from a block. The Monument has that quality too, while the Rymd and Dream(what was it again?) to a lesser extent. The artefact with the right dial adds a very different champion to the design, but I also maintain my previously iterated reservation that when you go for an unusual shape, would you not rather embrace that to the full, rather than ending up with a mild round base? The approach reminds me a bit of Makina, but a crucial difference is that Pedral stays much more in line with vintage blueprints.

    • @themicrobrandexpert
      @themicrobrandexpert  6 месяцев назад

      Nice call on Makina, I just love that brand too!
      I believe the Artefact is not only the "safest" design, but it actually is the most refined. The subtle transitions, the different types of finish add up to what's usually perceived as a more premium product. And in monoblock constructions, adding such details is a lot harder without taking away from their character. That being said, I just realised that I'll be baking the Artefact thinking about the Blac Ivy variant that micht loose a lot of those fine details through the PVD coating...

    • @benjaminvis
      @benjaminvis 6 месяцев назад

      @@themicrobrandexpert it's not necessarily the case, though, that a PVD coating would love the details of finishing? I'm actually not sure what the order is: coating first then (re)finishing, or finishing first and then coating. Definitely on gold PVD brushed and polished distinctions seem to come through just fine, right? So, you'll back it? That's endorsement in its own right. I'm definitely still on the fence on that. As said, that immediate personal connection is missing with it. Perhaps the right variant might persuade me (or your review!) ;-)

    Kudos for having the guts to make so many prototypes, not a thing to "just" play with.
    As the the whole design, i'm half way there. Has some charm, still you need to swallow the weird oval-rhombus shape, will surely take some time or you'll be in love straight away. Well thought though and surely on a strict design theme, i applaud this.
    The Okapi(s) are surely more fun, hands and colors pop up nicely, but in the end the plain (gold?/ the Rim?) Artefact is probably my best.
    PS 03:37 Love the reverse move of the seconds hand... a wild trip in time!😜(nice shot btw, as a shadow is moving too!)

      Thank you, Stavros!
      I agree first contact can be a bit jarring. However, as I pointed out to, my impression is that this first contact doesn't make you turn around, but rather lean in.
      Okapi are my favourites, too, closely followed by the Artefact and the Rymd. The Artefact is the more subdued of the designs, that's probaby why Kevin has decided to start with it. It's a mature watch where the unusual is well tempered. It has got many, many strong points and only a few (fixable) mini-flaes. But I'm getting ahead of myself here - wait for the review! 😂
