In order to achieve this effect I normally select the shadows in the color range selector and create the layer mask using that selection but I like your approach as well!
I go faster in creating new designs thanks to you! As you have given ingredients for super cool effects to achieve e.g. textured background, grains, topographic map patterns, dust-scratches textures and shapes. Million thanks!
