BJ demonstrates how to use Tamiya Basic Putty to add textures to the surfaces of your models.
Just use lacquer thinner to thin the putty to your desired consistency.
Tamiya Basic Putty dries quickly, offering a gritty finish which is perfectly suited to texturing.
Used neat from the tube, the putty gives tall peaks when stippled with a stiff , coarse brush.
The finish progressively becomes smoother as the putty is thinned with more lacquer thinner.
This technique can also be used with water based putties by thinning with water or acrylic paint thinners.
Very thin putty can be used as a coarse primer that is easily hand brushed to cover imperfections.

Thank you for another great instructional video.
I wonder if, in the future, you could create a few videos on how to make terrain, from scratch, for HO scale trains, please? I am on a very limited budget, so would absolutely love to learn the very basics. I have a bit of track, but no trains yet, and probably won't have any trains for some time. So, in the meantime, if I can work on the terrain (the cheapest way possible) so it looks realistic, I may be able to save up for a train, a few carriages, and all the electrics I need to install to get the little buggers rolling.
Thank you. I love your videos on 'faux' painting techniques, and anything on HO scale trains & scenery.. Keep up the great work.
I will look into some terrain tutorials in the future. Marlin made a rock tutorial here ruclips.net/video/YbsTna6WNuo/видео.html
@@HearnsHobbiesMelbourne Yes, thanks, I did watch that tutorial and have it saved. I guess what I'm really asking is if it is possible to have a video, every now and then, starting from absolute scratch, like before you even lay your track down??? I only yet have part of an oval track (which I can eventually connect the pieces I have together), but was wondering what sort of interesting 'terrain' base I could put between the baseboard and the track, and start 'landscaping' around it - something not too heavy as I will have to move it when not 'playing' with it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, or direction to informative web pages. Thanks guys.
Hello, I would like to know how to store this putty, so it doesn't dry fast. And what can I do with one already dried.
Thank you for your question! Once opened, the putty will naturally slowly dry out. Squeeze from the base of the tube to keep putty at the cap so when it hardens there it easy to scape out. Keep the tube in a dark and cool area and it will still be useable in years. Dried putty can be dissolved with thin liquid cement to make texturing paste that crumbles.
Nice video my friend! 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Could you fill the window port holes in a plane, say an airliner, with this putty?
You can but there is some shrinkage. I would recommend you fill as much of the windows as possible with plastic from sprue, trim and then fill with this putty.
Hey there! I'm making a video about all the things I bought at a hobby shop in Japan. I was wondering if you would mind if I used a quick clip of your video? I'll be happy to credit you, and put a link to this video in the description. Please let me know! Best, Lori
Hello Lori, sure but please reach out to hh@hearnshobbies.com with the section that you want to use and we will confirm in writing.
@@HearnsHobbiesMelbourne will do. I found out I'm going back again next month, so going to wait and include what I find then in one big video. Thanks! Talk soon.
Can I use this putty on lexan or is there one I can use?
No, this putty is not suitable with lexan. May I ask why you want to putty up lexan?
@@HearnsHobbiesMelbourne trying to fix an old bodyshell and the standard fixes aren't going to work. Thank you.
Use Shoo Goo to fix old bodies.
GODBLESS.
Cheers, thank you for watching!
Would the Tamiya putty be robust enough to create the textured layer on Boba Fett's helmet as seen in The Mandolorian?
The putty will be robust as long as the figure is not heavily handled like an action figure.
@@HearnsHobbiesMelbourne Thanks. I am going to try it on a life-sized helmet for cosplay
If the putty is coated in a hard wearing paint it will be fine.
@@jameshuang8870 If you want a proper putty for texturing props I recommend you get auto body glazing putty. You'll be able to use the same technique but it's gonna be tough enough to be handled as roughly as a prop gets.

What happens at that time? Is it because I start speaking?
