    BJ explains and demonstrates how to use Tamiya Lacquer based putty.
    Lacquer based putty can be used directly from the tube or thinned down with lacquer thinner.
    This technique will work with any brand of lacquer based putty and any brand or lacquer thinner.
    Putty can be used to fill imperfections, holes, add detail, and create texture.
    It dries quickly, can be easily sanded smooth and also makes convincing cask steel effect.

    Hello. I usually thin putty down using acetone. I'll try lacquer thinners too.
    Thanks a lot.

    Thanks for the great video! I'm looking over the Internet to find out what ingredients, i.e., resin, maybe in Tamiya lacquer base putty, with no success, i.e., SDS/TDS. Are there any safety precautions and equipment, e.g., respirators, that I should take to protect my household while using this product? Please advise?

    • @HearnsHobbiesMelbourne
      @HearnsHobbiesMelbourne  2 года назад +2

      It is best to contact the manufacturer directly to receive the latest version of the SDS for a particular product. Lacquer has strong solvent fumes so should be used in a well ventilated area. Respirator may be needed if you are sensitive. Please consult the SDS for full details.

      It contains 4 methyl pentan 2 on that is the main sweet solvent smell you will smell.

    Would it take coloured lacquer ? Such as a rust colour to give a rough rusty finish ?
    Enjoy your posts, well done.

    • @HearnsHobbiesMelbourne
      @HearnsHobbiesMelbourne  3 года назад

      Yes, you can mix in any lacquer based paint to tint the putty. Glad you enjoy the posts!

    Is it possible to just thin it with water? Or possibly tamiya enamal thinner?

    • @HearnsHobbiesMelbourne
      @HearnsHobbiesMelbourne  2 года назад +1

      The Tamiya putty is lacquer based so needs to be thinned with solvents such as lacquer thinner. If you prefer water then you need to get a water based putty.

    Will tamiya basic putty shirnk under primer/paint cracking finish ?
    Will lacqer primer/paint reactivate it ?

    • @HearnsHobbiesMelbourne
      @HearnsHobbiesMelbourne  2 месяца назад

      As a lacquer based product it can shrink if used to fill large gaps. This product is best for hairline gap filling.
      Yes, lacquer primer/paint can reactivate it much like lacquer paint over a lacquer primer. As long as the coats are not excessive your putty will be fine.

    I have landing gear to a plane that won’t stay in place. Would this work to have it stay in place and from the gear falling? Like glue?

    • @HearnsHobbiesMelbourne
      @HearnsHobbiesMelbourne  2 года назад

      Putty is used for filling gaps and making texture. You will need glue to fix the landing gear. Without further details I can't give a good suggestion.

    Hi. May I use paint thinner rather than this lacquer thinner? Thanks

    • @HearnsHobbiesMelbourne
      @HearnsHobbiesMelbourne  8 месяцев назад

      You can use paint thinner as long as it is compatible with lacquer.

    How strong does the putty get when its dry?

    • @HearnsHobbiesMelbourne
      @HearnsHobbiesMelbourne  2 года назад

      The putty is firm, like plaster so it sands easily. It is suitable for filling fine gaps and texturing. For remodelling, use epoxy putties like Green Stuff, Milliput, or Tamiya epoxy putty.

    Is W&N Sansador solvent capable of thinning this down? I don't know what kind of thinner it is...

    • @HearnsHobbiesMelbourne
      @HearnsHobbiesMelbourne  Год назад +1

      Sorry, I don't have experience with Sansador. To be safe use lacquer thinners.

      @@HearnsHobbiesMelbourne Thanks. Are the lacquer thinners at the hardware store good or are specialist hobby products like Mr.Thinner superior?

    • @HearnsHobbiesMelbourne
      @HearnsHobbiesMelbourne  Год назад +1

      The hobby thinners like Mr Thinner are safer for modelling. Hardware lacquer thinners can be too hot and damage plastic.

    Is mr.surfacer basically the same as this?

    • @HearnsHobbiesMelbourne
      @HearnsHobbiesMelbourne  2 года назад +1

      Mr Surfacer is similar but will have different options for how fine the pigment is. When thinned to airbrushable thinness this feels like Mr Surfacer 1000.

    How long do I wait before sanding?

    • @HearnsHobbiesMelbourne
      @HearnsHobbiesMelbourne  Год назад

      Curing time depends on thickness of the putty and weather conditions. Check with your finger to see if the putty has movement. If not, try sanding.

      @@HearnsHobbiesMelbourne Thanks for responding, been using mostly putty for tiles and it's been working pretty good, it's water based so it's easy to thin with water and smooth, after fully curing add water and go over it several times with a cloth so the excess gets removed and only the scratches/holes get filled.

    Problem i have with these are after opening the tube, no matter how tight you close the top, it dries out in time and gets hardened.

    • @HearnsHobbiesMelbourne
      @HearnsHobbiesMelbourne  Год назад +2

      This putty does dry out after breaking the metal seal. Best to keep it in a cool place out of sunlight. I have a tube that has been open over a year with slight thickening of the putty closest to the cap. Scrape out the hard stuff and keep using. Perhaps sealing the opening with plastic wrap before tightening the lid could extend it's shelf life.

      Mr Hobby is similar. Both are lacquer based and can be thinned and cleaned with lacquer thinners.
