It's great to the Junior Wells videos from the 60's - 90's. I saw Junior several times while I lived in Chicago in late-80's. He embodies the Chicago blues harp style. Awesome!
In 1978 The Checkerboard Lounge was a warm and friendly dump of a bar. Bare lightbulb hanging from a wire over a foldout card table, and toilet that badly needed to be power washed, long tables in front of stage in a small room (this is before it seemed to get expanded -- in 1981 or so when it was filled with U of Chicago kids, and even had a hot table with food). Junior's place was Theresa's (sorry I never got there!) but he would show up at Buddy Guy's Checkerboard often, a special not-so-surprising guest. Oh, and sitting at the little card table was Johnny Dollar, Phil Guy and many other of the greatest blues men in history - the inventors of and exemplars of the Chicago style. And who was that lunatic who while playing would walk outside the club, still wailing? Good times!
Having played bass with them a few times was awesome. I also enjoyed watching them argue backstage. They broke up one night in Redondo Beach, CA. when Buddy dropped acid and became Jimi Hendrix reincarnated and blew the roof off the place. Buddy walked out on the pier ad libbing. Junior asked me "What the fuck is he doing? ". I said "Sounds like VOODOO CHILD to me, and I should probably join him", so I did and Junior drew the song out for about 45 minutes of killer guitar work. I had a lot of fun, but Junior went ballistic on Buddy and quit. I was just sitting there smoking a joint with both of them. They got back together again at a later point.
+Suzanne Hankins I envy you. My best friend and I went to interview Junior for our high school newspaper, in either 68 or 69. Junior was a sweetheart. We were talking to him between sets, and he was having such a great time seeing a couple of high school kids get excited about the blues, he kept us thewre and let the band play for a while before thanking us and heading out to the stage. Great guy. I miss him.
in 1972 I had never heard of john mayall but I went to one of his concerts in las vegas he was the only white guy in the band and they used all blue lights and I was trippin I really enjoyed that concert
Well, It is nice to see the British giving some credit to the Black American Roots for the grandeur of universal culture we all can admire and enjoy today.
John Mayall (keyboard/teclados); Colin Allen (drums/batería); Mick Taylor (guitar /guitarra); John McVie (bass/bajo). Plus, all the other blues greats /Además de todos los demás grandes del blues... What a night it must have been! / ¡Qué noche debió ser aquella!
Man Buddy Guy is the shit, playing that beautiful Guild semi...I met Buddy and Jr Wells after a gig at the Bottom Line, had a couple of drinks with them in about 1976, 2 very nice gents
one of the best live blues performances ever. 5 stars. Only because utube doesn't allow me give any more than 5. Junior, you're missed. Buddy, it's a shame you don't play like this anymore.
I am Suzanne's husband, but I'm using her tablet to post. Suzanne was with me my entire music career. I'm 67 and still playing the blues as Chicago Mad Dog & The Bad Dogs out of Los Angeles. Watch for our CD, DVD s and live shows coming soon to a location near you.
"1-2 Shoe 'em what ta dew, Hey!" Good Gawd! I want that hat in large. Shit, I want the suit too! "Snake charmin, guit-pickin', shack shakin' goodness!" That's a tongue twister for you. "Hey, Buddy!" All-American Blues Team Co-Captains. I make my daughters watch this stuff… they love it. They know the funk when they hear it.
What's this I hear going all around town? The people are sayin' you gonna put the kid down Lordy, what your doing? You call it what you want, I call it messin' with the kid. You told me you loved me You told me a lie, I love you woman till the day I die Lordy, what you doin You can call it what you want I call it messin' with the kid
One hot night in June 1982 at New Jersey's Capitol Theater, John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, featuring Mick Taylor (Rolling Stones) on lead guitar, John McVie (Fleetwood Mac) on bass, and Colin Allen (of Rod Stewart's band) on drums,
@glassslide . Someone just lent me recently the VHS tape of this concert , released in the mid 80's it was called 'Blues Alive' . Mick Taylor and Albert King were also really in fine form. However I read that it has been re released on DVD with the title "Jamin The Blues' with extra songs.
Junior is a precise bluesman ,he never noodles cause he can't or he knows better and that's a good thing some guys try to noodle too much and it sounds like a mess like some players i know lol me and junior would always talk bout this kinda thing lol miss you june bug i love u r.ip miss talking and playing with you and clowning
@glassslide i have had privilege of playing at buddy guy's legends bar in chicago, got to play harp on same stage as some of the greats, buddy is a great man and really nice guy, no pun intended
Is that Mick Taylor,Colin Allen, and John Mcvie . I saw them at the Espy St Kilda Australia mid 80s playing songs from Crusade and Laurel Canyon LPS Great...
Mick Taylor showed up Albert King in the same concert on a Stormy Monday song. Maybe Buddy Guy was saying, "hey, this is my time." Albert King might not be up there with Buddy Guy, Freddie King, Eric Clapton and the likes, but he still proves to be a great bluesman!
Junior Wells, the original John Mayall. John can equal Junior on the Harmonica, but the singing belongs to Junior; Mayall has the keyboard also. The contrast between Buddy Guy/Junior Well's Hoodoo Man and John Mayall's bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton is interesting; ultimately, their two different albums - both great. This video is of the same concert John Mayall played Stormy Monday with Albert King. You can tell by the clothes John Mayal is wearing.
What's this a-here goin all around town The people they say they're gonna put the kid down Oh no Oh look at what you did You can call it what you want to I call it messin' with the kid You know the kid's no child and I don't play I says what I mean and I mean what I say Oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah Oh look at what you did You can call it what you want to I call it messin' with the kid She won't do this, won't do that She won't do nothin till she know where it's at Oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah Oh look at what you did You can call it what you want to I call it messin' with the kid We're gonna take the kid's car and drive around town Tell everybody you're not puttin' him down Oh yeah yeah yeah yeah Oh look at what you did You can call it what you want to I call it messin' with the... yeah One more now
Looks like this was the mid-80s Bluesbreakers with Mick Taylor, John McVie and Colin Allen? Never saw a clip of Taylor with the Stones where he's smiling and moving with the music...
As reverential as he is about this music, John Mayall must have had a ball here, with these two. (What a great document of the late Junior Wells as a performer.) Mick Taylor had been with Mayall's Bluesbreakers, having succeeded Peter Green, who had succeeded Eric Clapton, then he left to join the Rolling Stones (upon the occasion of Brian Jones' untimely demise), and then he came back to Mayall... And here he is, looking over Buddy Guy's shoulder... ...and here he is, attending GRAD SCHOOL.
you're all missing the point! you have all these great musicians paying respect to one man! RORY FREAKING GALLAGHER! damn junior could blow man! you definaletly hear that little walter in his playing!

The original Blues Brothers. Had the great fortune to see them live at the Town & Country Club in Kentish Town, London, back in the 1980s.

They fit like a glove ....Seeing them in a bar back in the 80's was the best....Good old Smokey bar and dirty, gritty Chicago Blues !!

Blues = shivers down the spine.... = goodtimes :)
in 1972 I had never heard of john mayall but I went to one of his concerts in las vegas he was the only white guy in the band and they used all blue lights and I was trippin I really enjoyed that concert
Junior Wells was the deal! When he a Buddy Guy played together, it was magic, even with Buddy's sour notes.

In keeping with an old blues tradition, Junior's suit fits him perfectly, and it goes without saying I love his killa harp.

Hello cameltooth,
Yes, the Crusades album. I grew up with my father's John Mayall albums.
Junior Wells, the original John Mayall. John can equal Junior on the Harmonica, but the singing belongs to Junior; Mayall has the keyboard also.
