0:54 “You got my finga .”
“Well why don’t you get your finger outta the way.” Savage!
And Hickory rolling his eyes :)
My mom did something like that... she fed me a piece of sandwich through her own finger (instead of letting me do it myself) and when she turned away to talk to my sister... SNAP!!
"OW!! You bit my fingers!"
"Well, you get your fingers out my mouth!"
@@Lionstar16 Yeah, both Hickory's and Zeke's responses indicate that this is common for Hunk!
@@CadeD679 He's clumsy, just like the Scarecrow. ;-)
Right on my finger!
This movie came out at the end of the Great Depression. In Mississippi, it was still more like the middle of that period. My Aunt Ina who was just 11 wanted to see it terribly--they got old movie magazines from the bookmobile that came by. She learned that there would be a special showing for children at the only theater in Utica. It would cost 5 cents. She had one cent saved up. She found another penny between the floorboards of the old house. Her older brother lent her a penny, and she worked at the house down the road to earn another. But still it was only 4 cents. She went to the movie theater and stood in line and explained to the ticket lady that she had only 4 cents, but that she promised she would leave before the ending. The lady with tears in her eyes told her to just go in and enjoy the FULL movie. That is a great story.
That's sweet
Great story!
Beautiful story!
The Depression ended six years before this movie came out. Its effects were still felt, but the worst was over. Had she ever read the book?
@@MaskedMan66 There was another big recession in 1937-38 so the hard times weren't over yet.
The foreshadowing in this scene is brilliant
What scares me even more, is that it's 80 now... this movie is 80-years-old... by time I'm 40, this will be 100-years-old...
Time is such a funny thing.
So your 22 years old
We didn’t even exist when this movie was made. Makes me wonder what we were like before conception
You are lucky you will probably live to see 20 years pass by. I wont. And so many others are just about out of time. Yeah time is eerie and strange! It just passes so quietly and so subtle but INEXORABLY!!!!
@@danielgoss6367 We aren't anything before conception.
i’ll be 22
I love how Dorothy is still nice and clean after falling into the pigpen.
Why shouldn't she be? There's no mud in there.
Aimee Ward that’s because Tom and jerry were there. (Not in this movie, I’m talking about the crossover movie with them)
Me too
The worlds first taste of movie magic
I was looking up her dress. ;)
I love how the tin man, scarecrow, & lion (before they’re in their makeup & costumes) make foreshadowing references about their character. The man who played as the lion gets called a coward by 1 of the guys. The man who played as the tin man poses like him while mentioning a “statue”. Heh, heh. Foreshadowing.
And the way Dorothy later on calls Miss Gulch "a wicked old witch," yes, very clever foreshadowing as to what we'll see them all as later on.
MrJamieMurph4141969, YES! THAT, TOO! 😆😁
@@lianasoares8052 so cool. "Brains", "Made of straw", "some heart", "a statue", "have a little courage", "coward".
And Professor Marvel being a phony fortune teller foreshadows him as the fake wizard
@@rstein926, that as well.
"You got my finga"
"Well why don't you get your finger out of the way"
"There you are right on my finger"
Hey, lucky thing it wasn't your head.
1:26 "Well, your head ain't made of straw ya know."
*POW!!* And neither are your fingers, Hunk.
DakariKingMykan no wonder he didn’t have any brains
+Jack Ford He did, actually.
XDXDXDXDXDXDXDXD
He shoulda seen that one coming
"Hunk"
That part always cracks me up.I know it hurts when you mash your fingers, but its still funny.
Hunk (Scarecrow), Hickory (Tin Man), and Zeke (Cowardly Lion) are perfect!
These three are my absolute favorites, esp. Burt Lahr!!! Gosh, he was precious!!!
ddivincenzo1 Bert is in a pbs special about Jewish Broadway.. he sings a song similar to his character in oz...
Huck/Scarecrow (Ray Bolger) was originally intended to be the Tin Man
+DakariKingMykan Hunk, you mean. And yes, ever since, as a child, he saw a one-man show put on by the dancer and comedian Fred Stone-- who had played the Scarecrow in the 1902 Broadway smash based on "Wizard"-- Ray determined that not only would he be a dancer, but if he was ever cast in any production of "The Wizard of Oz," he would play the Scarecrow.
Blaine Salas even though these three treated Judy terribly
I love the irony in the dialogue in this scene. Hunk (who is played by the same actor as the scarecrow), talks about not having brains, and says "You're head ain't made of straw", and Zeke (who's actor is also the cowardly lion), encourages Dorothy to have courage.
That's not irony, that's foreshadowing.
MaskedMan66 More than foreshadowing, it's what Freud called "day residue", primarily events that happen in our waking lives the day we dream get filtered through our subconscious and become symbolic in our unconscious state. (6/21/18)
+Henry Jackson I don't think the script writers were being that deep; in strictly dramatic terms, it's merely foreshadowing.
@@MaskedMan66 I agree with Henry Jackson. Dorothy's mind created these magical characters based on the people she knew. That's why at the end, she says "You, you, you... and you were there." Another person who was "there" was Miss Gulch whom Dorothy had called a wicked witch.
+dancepiglover That's made quite evident in the movie. This is not news. I'm just saying that Mr. Jackson was getting a little too in depth, bringing up Freud and all; that's always a red flag for me.
I love it when Zeke tells the pigs to get in the hog pen before he makes a dime bank out of 'em, haha!
That shows that he's firm towards the pigs
@@driftmaniac4705 Only he got scared when Dorothy fell in and he had to go in there and get her out.

1:27 well your head ain't made of straw ya know

@@jaredruff9823I’m not afraid of her.
Zeke: "She ain't nothin to be afraid of. Have a little courage that's all."
I'm not afraid of her.
Well the next time she squawks, walk up to her and spit in her eye. That’s what I’d do.
Classic foreshadowing, eh? xd
*Falls into pigpen*
By the way, the reason they were so horrified that she fell in is because pigs/hogs are omnivores, and will tear a human apart if they're hungry enough or smell blood.
No.
@Skeeby Zeeby My dad grew up in farmland, and many of his cousins were farmers. Never did we hear anything about pigs eating people.
@Skeeby Zeeby Yeah. Sure. Pull the other one.
@@MaskedMan66 pigs can eat humans (theres cases of them doing so) if given the right chance to but most domesticated pigs don't eat humans bc they're usually well fed (pigs are also cannibals so they have the ability to eat humans and each other). Wild hogs can and will eat u without thinking abt it.
They will if hungry enough but if u chop the body up and make it into slop they will definitely eat it
My favorite film of all time! My parents and I have watched this movie all the way though at least three or four times and never go tired of it! Wonderful story, wonderful acting, beautiful sets and extraordinary music. The Wizard of Oz will never go out of style.

It's Horrible to have our fingers Crushed, especially when being shut in doors.
@@bettyottman1718 the poetic thing here is that back in October I got my toe crushed and it turned all black it’s regained it’s natural color not that some of the dried blood underneath it had grown out but some of it is still black and I don’t know if my toe is ever going to look normal again but watching this still makes me laugh but at the same time it makes me feel sorry about his mistake and if his finger is in the same position.
I wish they had kept the scene showing Hickory building his tornado machine and telling Dorothy to have a heart.
Yea same here. I figured they would of put that deleted scene in special features. Unfortunately they didnt

@@isaywhateveriwantandyougot7421 Now you have.
0:52 one of my favorite parts of this scene I don't know why
A wonderful story:
Not long after seeing The Wizard of Oz, a little girl named Natalie Norris fell ill and was hospitalized. Her mother wrote to MGM and relayed her daughter's wish that she could get a visit from Dorothy. They called Judy, who was of course delighted to do it, and sent Natalie a letter telling her that they had a date. She wanted to come in full Dorothy kit, but by that time everything had been put away in storage, so Judy wore a simple frock and her own short hair, and Natalie didn't mind a bit. Judy chatted with her a while and even sang "Over the Rainbow" to her, bringing Natalie's mother to tears. Later, Natalie showed rapid improvement, and not only recovered, but later in life became a singer herself!
That's a beautiful story. Judy Garland truly was an angel. ❤
By the way, how many times did you watch the Wizard of Oz? :)
@@princessozmaofoz5242 Innumerable. 🙂 I was among those blessed individuals who grew up watching the movie on T.V. every year in the 70's and 80's. This movie are amazing
To all you young ones out there, the way this movie was seen by us “oldies“ in the 1950s and 60s was that they played it once a year on television. As you probably know we didn’t have VHS, DVD‘s or digital back then. We just had television (cable TV did not exist.) We only had seven channels, and our TVs were black and white. So for most of us for many years, we were seeing the entire movie in black-and-white. We did realize that once they get to munchkin land the movie goes to color. Our parents had probably seen the movie at the theaters when they were young. But, it was not playing at the theaters in my generation. It wasn’t until the mid 60s that people started getting color TVs. So I actually didn’t see this in color until I was about 13 years old even though I had been watching it since I was about five. But like I said, they only played it once a year and it was always a big deal, and we made sure to not miss it. This was nationwide. This is a great movie. It has everything. Perfect casting, a wonderful story. It’s a comedy, a drama, fantasy, & musical.
This movie, right here, I saw it when I wass five years old. The movie was so real to me and I remembering how I thought those flying mokeys were real. And yhe munchcan also existed living in those homes! When it start appearing on television, it would always appear on CBS in NEW YORK. We couldn't wait until 8 p.m. ☺🙂😀😊
