- Jen Beagin's Big Swiss is the messy, hot, lesbian, up-market literary novel that's destined for the small screen. Referred to as a letter from Penthouse Forum set in Hudson about trauma ...and all the trigger warnings.

Forearms are absolutely a thing
So I'm learning! I wonder if that's something I'll start noticing like when I learned Quentin Tarantino had a foot fetish and then Once Upon a Time In Hollywood took on a whole new angle.
I started this book and did not know WHAT to make of it. Thanks for this review.
It's a lot I admit - hope you managed to finish it!
Hi! Just found your channel and just finished Big Swiss. I love your review here. Very thoughtful! I have never read a book like Big Swiss and it will take a few days of thinking about it. I loved parts of the book, but the ending was underwhelming.
I just finished listening to the audiobook, I feel like Rebecca Lowman really brought Greta to life, and I agree with everything you said! Loved it in a very cringey yet addictive way!
I'm hearing that the audiobook really does capture Greta's tooth rattling voice - cringey and addictive is right!
Great thoughtful review.
This was a fantastic review! Enjoy your trip to Portugal.
Thank you! Fingers crossed it's all smooth sailing!
I read this and got exactly what I expected, odd characters and odd story. It was so different of a read. Totally agree, would do great on film. Gwendoline Christie has to play the Big Swiss.
Gwendoline Christie! Would totally put the big in big swiss - love it!
Great review
thanks! appreciate it
OMG let me know if you need a tour guide in Lisbon, so glad to welcome you here!
I've already checked out your Insta stories of Lisbon and it's like every bistro, cafe and restaurant is just chef's kiss beautiful. (So jealous of the Bel Canto visit!) Totally gonna take you up on that and I have so many questions! Can I DM you on Insta?
@@ThePoptimist I just saw this now lol so sorry!
She did have bags under her eyes. One was a toiletries bag the other a weekender
I read Big Swiss recently and I honestly still don’t know entirely how to put into words my reading experience. On the one hand, I was sucked in by the chaotic writing style and on the other hand, I was really turned off by Greta’s overall characterization and her weird choices throughout the story.
Weird choices indeed - she is an absolute mess, there's a diaper at one point for crying out loud. I think that chaos will translate well on screen with the right actor though
I don't know if it's true, but I read that Jodie Comer bought the rights to bring Big Swiss to the screen and plans to play Flavia. ❤ I'm at the part where they just met in the dogpark and I'm loving it.
That’s true. You can find Jodie talking about it on many clips on RUclips.
"youre all a little gayer now, youre welcome" God youre funny! hhahaha
...just try and deny it tho
🎉Mini donkeys for the win!🎊. Travel safely ✈️
Thanks! fingers crossed for some smooth sailing
What does a "hand-forged heirloom apple cider" taste like? LOL! Funny!!!!!!
...about $14 a glass
I forgot to mention that the audiobook narrator's voice for Flavia was a dead-on impression of the IG Sad Beige voice for Werner Herzog, It made me laugh every time I heard it. Enjoy your trip to Portugal, favorite locale for Urban Sketchers everywhere, and good luck getting time to read this months honker of a pick. :)
Yeah I'm a bit nervous about my ability to finish before the end of the month! Love that for the audiobook, would make the reading experience even better. Looking forward to Portugal but no plans to start my retirement hobby of urban sketching quite yet though.
This was EXACTLY my first thought when I heard her, lol.
listening to you I kept thinking "weird". So I guess there's that :D
Weird does not even begin to cover it. I'm sure the Germans have a word for that feeling of revulsion, bemusement and wtf all at once.
have a great time in portugal..
Thank you! Counting down the hours!
I was on the fence about this one, but now I think I'll give it a shot
Edit: forearms are for sure a thing for heterosexual women, i.e. a man rolling up the sleeves on a button down shirt. I imagine it's the same no matter the sexuality of the forearm admirer
I've learned that forearms are totally a thing for heterosexual women, like the female equivalent of foot fetishes - though I wonder if there's a subgenre of Only Fans that's just forearms. Tell me because there's no way I'm trying to find out.
@@ThePoptimist You're going to need to do outside research on that, I am not part of the forearm kink community 😂😂
hard pass!
I have to agree with the forearm attraction!
You can read while on an airplane though… 😂
Oh the Kobo is ready to go for the trip there, I just know it's not going to get a lot of use once I arrive.
World's hottest man forearms: hockey player Maxime Talbot. It's absolutely a thing.
I'm imagining a world in TikTok with nothing but forearms - someone must have figured out how to monetize against that by now. I don't get either, but forearms make more sense than feet.
😂 you're hilarious
What is an unneutered therapy animal?
especially horny, entirely inappropriate, and yet somehow crucial to ones well being. It's a whole thing.
An excellent review of what sounds like a dismal novel. The review almost needs trigger warnings.. Kind of kidding.
Honestly I don't even scratch the surface of what is ultimately deflection written on the page. The trauma the main characters share is brutal and unflinchingly written - this is not for everyone.
Why was she talking like a goober? Her habit of delivering information out of order only worsened with alcohol
LOL - Big time goober!
