This movie came out when I was just a young kid in the 90’s, the week my grandpa died from lung cancer. The soundtrack of this film always reminded me of him. Now I watch this opening and I think of all the years that have passed and how the best days might truly be behind me. 35 sucks. Enjoy your youth, kids.
My little bro passed away a few years ago and this was his favorite movie. He -was- Angus, a big, awkward kid with a big heart. Still remember him whenever I hear this song, still listening in 2021.
So sorry for your loss, my big brother passed away in 2018 - he was a big guy with a big heart too! I remember watching this movie with him when it came out ❤ just watched it again with my husband and daughter.
I’m now 34. I used to watch this movie every weekend at my grandmas, I watched it the week before I started high school to prepare me. This song is so special. The marching band adds so much.
Totally agreed! After seeing this movie as a kid I immediately bought the soundtrack because it was so good, and the only disappointing part on it was this song. Without the full marching band as back-up it just never grabbed me the same way it does here.
I went to the high school this was filmed at and every time we had a substitute teacher we would mention it and the substitute wouldn’t believe it so they would put it on to prove it. Must’ve worked 4 or 5 times
Man, this movie really hits all the feels for me. I was in High School when this one came out. I was a meek, lost teen who just did everything to try and make friends and failed at every turn. This movie taught me "Screw em! Who cares what they think?" and I've lived by that mantra ever since. Suddenly I stopped worrying about how others would react and just did what I wanted to do. It really yanked me out of my shell. Later in life I actually got to meet Chris Crutcher and was able to tell him my story. He lit up and had a the biggest grin on his face when I told him the impact his story had on me. The autographed copy of his book is one of my greatest possessions.
I remember being a snarky 9 year old watching this intro with my little sister. I kept rewinding this scene to "make fun" of it. Now I can look back and realize that this is one of the first moments in my life where I began to feel the power of music. I used the sarcasm and critique of the scene to mask how impactful this was. Music was always my first love.
I saw this in the theater with my friend when it came out and we were both freaking out saying “What is this song??? It’s amazing!” It still gives me goosebumps and the song just isn’t as good without the marching band. Whoever mixed the two is a musical genius.
Watched this yesterday, felt younger again for a few moments, tried not to have leaking eyes but I've been put through so much, and my grandpa needs surgery, and i miss my wife, and i gotta go through an airport alone which started my anxiety been to family funerals, just so much has happened and is happening anyway needed to watch this yesterday.
I've avoided listening to this song for over 20 years, because it reminds me of someone. I searched for it tonight to see if it still hurt. It does, but I feel like I've confronted something that needed confronting.
I relate so hard to this, as I make very strong musical attachments to people, places, events. I'm sorry it still hurt but I' glad you got some closure (hopefully).
That was my first Mazzini Star experience too. I saved all my baby sitting money (I was 14) for weeks to buy the soundtrack. The CD store only had one copy with a giant price sticker on it, covering half the song list. I bought it only to find Fade Into You wasn’t on the soundtrack, and this song didn’t have the awesome marching band. I was so disappointed but eventually got to really enjoy the soundtrack anyway.
The fact that they choreographed, and presumably composed, an entire high school marching band performance to sync with an alt rock song just for the opening credits is pretty impressive.
We actually recorded MY high school marching band, playing in sync with the song and then our composer David Russo, and Richard Butler, re-mixed the song to create this version!
Used to go to the public library to check out the movie on VHS in 1995 when I was about 10 years old... just for this opening... and keep rewinding it! Ya'll don't know the struggle back then, but it was worth it! listening to this now in 2023 at 38 doing my workout!
I love this movie soooo much. its a shame they dont make movies for teens like this anymore. everything has to be so hip and trendy. I remember when kids movies really were wholesome and relatable. now its just nothing but little kids being adults.
This movie is criminally underrated. The 90s, much like the 80s, had TONS of teen movies and many of them are classics: 10 Things I Hate About You, Empire Records, American Pie, Dazed and Confused, Clueless, But I'm A Cheerleader, Can't Hardly Wait, Now and Then, etc. Angus gets drowned out among them which is a shame because this movie has so many incredible scenes. From his grandpa's monologue about Superman, the "screw em" advice (which is so simple yet so important), coping with loss, coping with bullying, social isolation that comes from being fat, and instead of just the stereotypical troupe of pimple-faced nerds you have a smart fat kid and a skinny dweeb that possess the most genuine friendship you will ever see in a teen movie.
Couldn't agree more. The feels I get from this movie are insane. I was a fat kid all through school. Now I'm healthy and still connect to that part of me when I watch this.
Probably doesn't help that my school colors were silver white and blue. And I was a tall fat kid in love with this athletic blonde girl named Melissa. My twerp friend was named Eddie, though, not Troy.
That's what I thought when I was scouting locations for the movie and heard the original version. I immediately called my old high school marching band director and my composer, David Russo, and asked if they could record MY high school marching band playing along with the song. And they did it... And then we got Richard Butler and David into a studio to remix the song... and... there you go...
My mom decided to show me this movie a little bit before high school started for me. I can say with great confidence this movie is the pinnacle of my high school life, and I have absolutely no complaints.
Agree this is the best version of the song (directly from the movie), as the marching band is more prominent throughout. A bit dissapointed that it's cut off by movie dialog and crowd noise before the end, but the complete version on the soundtrack CD sadly pushes the band to the background. And the copyright blocks sharing on RUclips.
“Superman isn’t brave, he’s indestructible, you can’t be brave and indestructible at the same time, Angus, you’re brave.” The second Batman in Batman V Superman said, “you’re not brave, men are brave.” I instantly thought the speech from George C Scott in Angus.

Charlie Talbert did a question and answer session and it was said that the rights to it were purchased by some individual and so the reason for never having been released on DVD...quite tragic

It's really cool to see that this movie touched a lot of people. I went to school with Charlie Talbert, "Angus". The poor guy was made fun of a lot in school but I was always cool with him. I'll never forget how some of the jealous burnouts stood there smoking in between classes and bitching that they didn't get to take half the day off to go do movie stuff like he did. Definitely the best version it loses something without the marching band
It pulls at the high school nostalgia strings with the band. Also makes it super regal. heh
Yeah, it certainly fits the theme of Angus's character, a talented kid who just can't seem to win.
