From the moment of its premiere, The Magic Flute was an unqualified success. A universal opera that appeals to young and old alike, thanks to its marvellous arias. Summary of the opera and its characters. Prince Tamino is commissioned by the Queen of the Night to rescue her daughter Pamina from the prisons of Sarastro, portrayed as a tyrant. Guided by the Queen's three Ladies, Tamino is accompanied by the birder Papageno: to Papageno belongs a carillon, and to Tamino a magic flute - two instruments that will help them on their journey. But Tamino discovers on his journey that the forces of evil are not on Sarastro's side, but on those of the Queen of the Night: she has deceived him, and will do anything to take revenge on Sarastro, whom she hates. This is Tamino's initiatory journey to rescue and conquer Pamina. All these adventures lead them to love and light, under Sarastro's benevolent wisdom. In the end, the Queen of the Night and her retinue are defeated. Karl Böhm's 1964 cast is a dream, dominated by Fritz Wunderlich's luminous, highly lyrical timbre...
