  • A quick compilation of pics and video showing how i built my " faux rock " pond / rock pool using the same method as in my other "how to" faux rock video. This is my first attempt at such a project. I recycled any old bricks, blocks, concrete fence posts, broken up concrete pathways and anything else i could lay my hands on in the process, including the little pond which was due to go to the dump .............

I like how you used chicken wire and mortar to hide the pond edge. Very creative.
Did you use a sealant to stop the water rising between the mortar and the pond wall?
Mortar doesn't like to stay stuck to plastic for a long period...

      Hi.
No , i deliberately didn't seal between the rigid pond liner and the fake rock for two reasons. Firstly to allow any excess water from rainfall etc to drain away and secondly to allow free movement should the liner sink a little due to weight or ground movement

Got a few friends who've done just that and it seems to be ok. Never tried hypertufa myself though

lol, you got the best idea to cover those ugly rocks with cement , can you share your mixture to get that texture ?

Hi SDQ , its just a normal 3 parts sand to 1 part cement with some liquid waterproofer and liquid colouring added at the time of the mix

For a really nice natural look, paint some plain yogurt on the rocks here and there and a pretty moss grows

Thanks Rose. I've never tried the yoghurt method but my faux rock projects have aged naturally, plenty of moss etc . I wish i could put a pic up for you to see
