A merge of Sega and SNK would've been a hardcore gamer's dream come true. The DC-NGPC linkup was a sign of things to come, but sadly both companies couldn't survive the juggernauts of Sony (console market) and Nintendo (handheld market). Sega and SNK, how I miss thee.
I love all 2D beatemup 's. But... I remember those times when my friends came at my house just to play Marvel vs Capcom 1 on my Dreamcast. They loved it. I was not into this kind of games back then. And couldn't understand them why they got so excited about this game! Had great titles like Shenmue, Code Veronica, SEGA GT, F355 etc. But they preferred MvsC. Now, 12 years later, seems like they were right!
Great review, the good news is that Capcom "finally" released the Capcom vs SNK 2 for the PSN network. I highly recommend this game to all the fighting game fans for it is my 2nd favor fighting game of all time!
Code Veronica is my favorite Resident Evil and the Shenmue series will forever be a classic. Yu Suzuki is on record for saying that he'd like to do a 3rd Shenmue, so it seems like the greats always find a way to continue.
I think for a lot of us this was our first chance to play other folks from all over the world. It was the first fighting game on the first online gaming platform XBOX live. I agree that today it looks really dated when put up next to current gen fighters (except for KOF XIII, in which case it looks comparable and CvSNK2EO actually has more moves for the SNK characters! So the older game actually has more animations.) but I will always love this game.
I totally agree, CVS3 would be huge. The series has alot of fans. I love the CVS series, there is still so much that can be done with the series, it's not even funny. So many possibilities. Imagine the roster, oh the possibilities. CVS2 and even CVS1 still holds up, but we need a new entry in the series pronto. Been like 11 years since CVS2 hit the scene. If SF can be ressurected, CVS sure as hell can be too.
Thanks for covering this one and adding the humor Mark! I used to play the hell out of this title in High School. Now pick up a copy of Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike for the PlayStation 2, it's a wonderful game that tournaments are still being held for today.
@retrofangamer Ryu, Kazuya Mishima, Cole MacGrath (PS3/Vita), Ken Masters, Nina Williams, Guile, Craig Marduk, Abel, King, Chun-Li, Bob, Cammy White, Julia Chang, Sagat, Hwoarang, Dhalsim, Steve Fox, Poison, Yoshimitsu, Hugo Andore, Raven, Ibuki, Kuma, cameos from Guy and Cody, strongly suggest that they are playable characters...
I have Mark Of The Millennium, but I always wanted Millionaire Fighting. This is one of the best fighting games of all time next to Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, Street Fighter III 3rd Strike, and The King Of Fighting 2002 Unlimited Match. My favorite fighting game of all time is The King Of Fighters XIII, but these classics will always be in fashion because they are truly timeless.
Me too. My favorite console ever. I bought one at launch, and bought every game over the following couple of years. Well, until it died of course, then i figured there was no point. So I guess I am guilty of burning games too, but post-2002.
they changed the name from Vega to Balrog and bison when they released the game in the west, cause M.bison sounded to much like M.Tyson , the character was supposed to be a spinoff of tyson, but they feared lawsuits, so the last boss (bison) original name is Vega, and balrog is the original Vega as we know him in the west
The boxer was originally named M. Bison as an obvious parody of Mike Tyson. To avoid any legal actions, they called the boxer Balrog in the states. Plus, they didn't think Vega would sound very daunting as the dictator (M. Bison in the states). So they switched those two and the Spanish fighter's names around.
In an interview about SFxT Seth Killian mentioned that Capcom had been thinking about it again in response to a question about other crossover titles. CvsSNK2EO is only nostalgic love for me right now, but I would love to see a 3rd one too.
The grooves are awesome, its just that CvSNK2 can be unbalanced at high level play, their are a few overpowered characters such as Sagat and then there's "roll canceling," another flaw in the gameplay which allows players to dodge enemy attacks and quickly counter, and causes certain attacks to have unintended invulnerability. But other that it's still a great fighting game.
Best played on the Sega Dreamcast! Gamecube...not so much. PS2 and Xbox versions are playable, though. Excellent game! Better than the first. Worth grabbing for Sega's console.
*Added to wish list* The Dreamcast is such an awesome machine. It's like all of its internals are made of awesome. It's so awesome that it's just awesome.
Lol! The subtitles are genius!! I have this game for the dreamcast. Personally, I think that the move to the capcom 6 button controls from the snk 4 button (in the original capcom vs snk) was a mistake. Also, the re-used sprites from the SF: alpha series stand out like a sore thumb-- sagat, cammy, blanka, dahlsim dan and more, all deserved to be remade as well. Now review SNK vs Capcom: SvC Chaos!!
I missed out on CvSnk2 and just brought this game last week for £3. I don't recommend Capcom Vs SNK 2 to players that want a game thats a technical prowess of a fighting game as it is unbalanced and easy to exploit some of the groove mechanics. But other than that, this game is fun as hell and can very addicting. Also, the music rocks!
@JMCDS45 The gamecube version wasn't bad. Its just the GCN controller wasn't meant for fighting games (except for smash brothers). If you had an arcade stick it was great.
Hey someone else uses that metaphor! Brother you are speaking to the choir! Or at least you would have been about two months ago. What KoFXIII made me realize is that the reason the bosses seem so cheap is that the game is trying to teach you how to play it well. Once you get a handle on KoFs style (Far more aggressive, Using the four jumps, etc.) You will be the one cheaping out the bosses. Your metaphor is almost perfect but like Dark Souls when you win it's a wole new level of "fun!"
I just bought this game for my Dreamcast with dc-x and I can't wait to play it. I use to have it on the GameCube and I cried when it was stolen from me.
This game brings back so many memories. Capcom vs SNK 2 FTW. Great Game. Im hoping for a 3rd Game in the series. Also please review Street Fighter III New Generation,2nd Impact or 3rd Strike. It would make me happy. :D
Capcom Vs. SNK 2 is definitely in my top 5 fighting games of all time. I have it on ps2, but I remember playing it on an arcade at a local restaurant when I was a sophmore in highschool back in 2001, I must of bought the game later that week/month.
HA! I owned that years before your review! Lol. I actually got it so i could utilize my fav fighting character ever, Genjuro, without a 20 sec load time between ever match as it was on Samurai Shodown 3. Yep, i needed him in something new that would appear in an instant. At Long Last, SamSho anthology was released and i found out that SamSho 3 was indeed the best all along. SamSho 6 aint bad. Get the SamSho Anthology, totally worth it!! you can even make your own color pallets for each edition.
@robertxtm TOTALLY AGREED! were getting MVC3, mutliple versions of SF4, KOF XIII, CVS3 can easily be a part of that equation. Please SNK and Capcom come together right now.
I just bought me a copy of this for the ps2 right after watching your review. Thanks for the great reccomendation as I am really enjoying this game. Could you do one for the first game on the ps1? I hear it is a really good port of the Dreamcast version but I wouldn't mind hearing more.
Have it for PS2 and GameCube. My most favourite fighting game ever (Darkstalkers are very close but still). Mai, Athena, Chun-Li, Cammy and Maki. Plus Sakura (Capcom) and Sakura (SNK). These subtitles are hilarious. But why japanese game have english subtitles?
this is a very complete and wonderful fighting game, you keep playing. i play this a lot on my arcade cabinet, plays smooth, sound is very good, graphics top notch.. a gotta have gem!
Correction: I bought Capcom vs SNK (Was on Dreamcast) along with Soul Calibur. In the future I plan to get SNK vs Capcom for Neo Geo AES. Thanks for catching that.
You can present people with the facts (RE: Gamecube version), but they'll still make assumptions without even having played the title discuss and they choose to believe whatever they want to believe in.
Um, this game was not exclusive to Japan. One of the kid's who lived on my dorm floor in college had this game for the Dreamcast. We played this game every day. I vividly remember always choosing to fight on the London stage the background music for this stage was so catchy.
@Christuserloeser I doubt that you even know what balance means. The Xbox & GC are updated from the original Arcade, DC and PS2 version and fix a glitch that was detrimental to competitive play, so if anything they are the ultimate and best balanced versions.
The only mistake they made in this game was including characters like; Dan, Morrigan, Chibi Cammy, Blanka, Yuri, Benimaru, Chang/Choi, Todoh, and characters with swords and knives. And excluded characters like Yang, Elena, Makoto, Gill, and Alex(Capcom) Andy, Mature, Robert, Heidern, Billy Kane, and Leona.
@TheChrysalis it will be nice to see a SNK vs Capcom 3, but it depends if they want to keep the sprite animations, but hey Street Fighter x Tekken is in development, thats going to be insane.
Hey Classic games room :D I just ordered capcom vs snk 2, and the king of fighters 98 ultimate match, both for ps2 and only spent around 20 pounds, do you think thats a good deal and do you think im gonna really enjoy the games? i cant wait to play them i love beat em ups xD loved marvel vs cacom 1,2 and 3 and loved all the 2d beat em ups like streets of rage and street fighter 2 :)
@AustrianFilmGeek I wish I still did. I foolishly sold it off as my friends only played Tekken and Soulcalibur and I could only fight the AI. I should have held on to this game, regardless. It's monumental.
I have this for the PS2, the disc is kinda ugh as I must keep the music disabled or the game freezes or drags through unnatural load times (between stages up to 2-5 minutes, gah!!). With the music off the game behaves as normal. I had to use a memory card and my spare PS2 to get it running there enough to turn the music off. Trying on my regular modded PS2, the option screen would freeze before I could access it. Don't really need the music, I needed the fighting action, now I have it, no issues.
@Roodwurm i have played the gamecube and no its isnt unplayable. its just really awkward to do the special moves and super moves do to the controller. I dont recommend the gamecube version unless you dont have a ps2,xbox, or japanese sega dreamcast
@Clesarie Haha, I have a PS2, Dreamcast and GC. In all fairness, none of the controllers of those systems are ideal for fighting games (you can tell me anything but that that hole in the middle of the PS2 dpad is friendly to your thumbs when performing input commands). Either deal with their limitations or get a stick/specialized fight pad.
@kyringe Its the Japanese version... When Street Fighter II was released outside of Japan some of the names got switched so Capcom wouldn't get sued by Mike Tyson... notice how Mike Tyson and M.Bison (Boxer) are both dirty boxers :D
This is the LAST and ONLY game i currently still play on my dreamcast when the controller is working which is rarely. This is my favorite fighting game of all time. CVS2 the best.
Best fighting game ever...
With all due respect, Capcom VS. SNK 2 was localized as it had english subtitles for both the GameCube and Playstation 2 versions.
You can thank Sega of America for bailing out on having games come to America once Dreamcast was going under. Shenmue 2 was yet another Prime Example that never made it to USA for Dreamcast.
However if you have a America Dreamcast and a Gameshark you can use your gamehark to play Japanese as well as Euro games without having a modded System.
+John Mellinger Shenmue 2 did make to Europe on the Dreamcast though..
EnforcerX71 Yeah in my comment I mention that... I had the Euro version on my American Dreamcast XD
John Mellinger you're right...
His name was Bernie Stolar, and he was public enemy #1 to US Dreamcast owners back in the day.
You can also use the Utopia boot disk to play games from different regions
One of the best fighting games ever!
angelandra it's underrated
I hope they make Capcom vs SNK 3
DNAngel I Agree For PlayStation 4, Xbox One, And Nintendo Switch!
Don't forget PC!
Tekken 7 is super lowkey stretched CvS3
Hell no. Crapcom will screw it up like SFV and MVCI
5 years later:
Still no capcom vs snk 3.
This is the first game my 3 year old nephew ever played. He calls it "Ninja fighters"
I agree that these capcom vs SNK games are really easy to pick up and difficult to master
which just makes them that much more fun
"You idiot, that's King with a visor on!!" was a really underrated comment.
How do you turn on the subtitles
A merge of Sega and SNK would've been a hardcore gamer's dream come true. The DC-NGPC linkup was a sign of things to come, but sadly both companies couldn't survive the juggernauts of Sony (console market) and Nintendo (handheld market). Sega and SNK, how I miss thee.
bought this game on the psn store and i love it :)
one of the best 2d fighting games ever
I love all 2D beatemup 's.

Great review, the good news is that Capcom "finally" released the Capcom vs SNK 2 for the PSN network. I highly recommend this game to all the fighting game fans for it is my 2nd favor fighting game of all time!
I love all these dreamcast reviews
easily one of the best fighting games ever
My favorite fighting game of all time. I earned my unlimited groove points and supers. Love this. So much. Yuri!!
Code Veronica is my favorite Resident Evil and the Shenmue series will forever be a classic. Yu Suzuki is on record for saying that he'd like to do a 3rd Shenmue, so it seems like the greats always find a way to continue.

These subs make the reviews 100x better, if possible.
The PS2 version was a great port, I definitely recommend it.
I have Mark Of The Millennium, but I always wanted Millionaire Fighting. This is one of the best fighting games of all time next to Marvel Vs. Had this on PS2 when I was a teen... All nighters followed....
It came out on the Japanese PSN 3 months ago, and will soon be on the US and EU PSN.

I have this on the Xbox and it is truly one of my favorite games of all time.
I've had this game for ages, but only recently started playing it again. It's a lot of fun, very nice review too.

Cvs3 we need you
Omg finally, found this game... Thanks Lord!!! Thank you...

I have a burnt copy of CVS2 that I was given back in 03 that plays on my U.S. Dreamcast. Still play it frequently to this day.
i think the subtitles may have been 1 of your best ideas Mark
The names Balrog, Vega, and M.Bison all got switched around when Street Fighter II was released outside of Japan because Mike Tyson.

Man, was just playin' this on my Dreamcast, one on one battles with the speed RIGHT up. Damn, makes for good gamin'.
This version with subtitles is exclusive for Pimptrex 9000,Vectrex and Atarex 5201
Just bought this an hour ago for $19.99 at buy/sell/trade game store that happens to have a large amount of Dreamcast games. Well worth it!
I just bought this game for my Dreamcast with dc-x and I can't wait to play it. I use to have it on the GameCube and I cried when it was stolen from me.
"This is da TRUE RUB we're MAKIN'!"
Man i love this game. A vs. game thats w/o all of the 100ft jumps and craziness of MvC. A solid fighting game.
Awesome game..
Still have it for the Gamecube!
This game brings back so many memories. Capcom vs SNK 2 FTW. Great Game. Im hoping for a 3rd Game in the series. Also please review Street Fighter III New Generation,2nd Impact or 3rd Strike. It would make me happy. :D

Those hidden subtitles! Lots of swearing!
I just bought me a copy of this for the ps2 right after watching your review. Thanks for the great reccomendation as I am really enjoying this game. Could you do one for the first game on the ps1? I hear it is a really good port of the Dreamcast version but I wouldn't mind hearing more.
I'm talking about Marvel vs Capcom 1 on the dreamcast ;) The best 2D beatem up for me.
Regarding the two players mode, I must agree. But the single player mode would have benefitted from a higher difficulty and some more scenarios.
this is a very complete and wonderful fighting game, you keep playing.
i play this a lot on my arcade cabinet, plays smooth, sound is very good, graphics top notch.. a gotta have gem!
A Marvel vs DC would be EPIC !! Thats not close to happening though? lets give it 10 more years
Capcom and SNK are both awesome.
This is my favorite fighting game of all time.
i just love those hidden subtitles.
Vega's voice actor in the Capcom VS SNK series is the legendary Wakamoto Norio.
Correction: I bought Capcom vs SNK (Was on Dreamcast) along with Soul Calibur. In the future I plan to get SNK vs Capcom for Neo Geo AES. Thanks for catching that.
Read the date on that article. Note how it was written on April first.
You can present people with the facts (RE: Gamecube version), but they'll still make assumptions without even having played the title discuss and they choose to believe whatever they want to believe in.
You can play Japanese dreamcast games on US consoles if you have an action replay disc
All you need is a modern PC, the emulator Chankast or nullDC and you're good to go :)
Um, this game was not exclusive to Japan. One of the kid's who lived on my dorm floor in college had this game for the Dreamcast. We played this game every day. I vividly remember always choosing to fight on the London stage the background music for this stage was so catchy.
They were in the XBOX version. Something to do with taking up most of it's already limited memory.
@Christuserloeser I doubt that you even know what balance means. The Xbox & GC are updated from the original Arcade, DC and PS2 version and fix a glitch that was detrimental to competitive play, so if anything they are the ultimate and best balanced versions.
The arcade that just opened up near me has this and its awesome.
@TheOverlordPlayer or what about SNK vs Capcom vs Marvel vs Tekken vs Virtua Fighter vs Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe sorry for overexaggerating lol
isnt kyosuke at 6:10 not also featuring in rival shools??
The only mistake they made in this game was including characters like; Dan, Morrigan, Chibi Cammy, Blanka, Yuri, Benimaru, Chang/Choi, Todoh, and characters with swords and knives. And excluded characters like Yang, Elena, Makoto, Gill, and Alex(Capcom) Andy, Mature, Robert, Heidern, Billy Kane, and Leona.
@TheChrysalis it will be nice to see a SNK vs Capcom 3, but it depends if they want to keep the sprite animations, but hey Street Fighter x Tekken is in development, thats going to be insane.

i love those subtitles.
@AustrianFilmGeek I wish I still did. I foolishly sold it off as my friends only played Tekken and Soulcalibur and I could only fight the AI. I should have held on to this game, regardless. It's monumental.
capcom vs snk 2 was released on gamecube in all countries: usa, Europe and japan. I had this here in italy 8]
Absolutely loved this game but my one gripe was why did they not give the Alpha character sprite an upgrade like they did with Bison?
"I take the train"
"ha fuck off!"
My Dreamcast shipped with a pirated copy of this game in the disc tray and it works!
Don't really need the music, I needed the fighting action, now I have it, no issues.
does the dreamcast version really have hidden subtitles?
@Roodwurm i have played the gamecube and no its isnt unplayable. its just really awkward to do the special moves and super moves do to the controller. I dont recommend the gamecube version unless you dont have a ps2,xbox, or japanese sega dreamcast
I still have this on my PS2 I like this game
@Clesarie Haha, I have a PS2, Dreamcast and GC. In all fairness, none of the controllers of those systems are ideal for fighting games (you can tell me anything but that that hole in the middle of the PS2 dpad is friendly to your thumbs when performing input commands). Either deal with their limitations or get a stick/specialized fight pad.
I bought Dreamcast for Soul Calibur and SNK vs Capcom.
