All very different versions, first heard Nils Lofgren do it on whistle test, stunning. Roger Mcguinn did it in Leeds as well. But all versions are of a fantastic song and all of them brilliant. Well done to the maestro Carole King and a huge thank you for it.

@@carrot_slayer_of_patatos A small excerpt of the Goin Back is at the end of Mother Love. It was first music Freddie ever released as a single, which had covers of I Can Hear Music (Beach Boys) and on the B side Goin Back (Carole King) he did this with the help of Brian and Roger, it was released under the name Larry Lurex in the early 70's. Freddie's cover is on RUclips.
@@carrot_slayer_of_patatos Yeah Mother Love is a tough listen, I think the way Brian had to finish the final verses was so sad. Although they shared writing credits, the last ever song written by Freddie Mercury was A Winter's Tail.
NOTE Dusty Springfield version altered the lyrics removing "ELECTRIC TRAINS" I could identify with THE BYRDS version having "ELECTRIC TRAINS" as a child. I think I'm Goin Back !

Thank you for so beautiful song. I enjoy the original version also enjoy Freddie Mercury's version. "Electric trains" and "christmas bells to shime" Sorry, I don't speak English but I try.
I had no clue that Carole King did this song until just now. It's good but Dusty's will always be my favorite. I read that they played it at her funeral. I can't believe that was 25 years ago already.
@@dougkauble4707 True... but you stated that she is the "one" who wrote the song, which is why I provided the clarification for anyone else who might not be aware that she didn't write it solo.
Springfield was a huge KIng fan and told King in an elevator, "So you're the little lady who writes all the music." Also, in Springfield's biography, her partner said Springfield kept and all of KIng's demos in a box and no one was allowed near them
Thank you for this upload. I have been searching for this version from Songs of Goffin & King, which I heard first in 1979. For me, this is the best version of Goin Back and I enjoyed hearing it once more after nearly 40 years!
What's with all the "this is one is better than that one" stuff, can't you just recommend we listen to another version with out all the subjective dross. Carole wrote this and she puts it over pretty darn well.
She certainly does but let's not forget to credit Gerry Goffin for writing the words to this Goffin/King classic. It's recorded by many many artists.😊❤
@@stephenspencer4672excellent yes and it's factually gerry goffin that actually composed the lyrical wording of the song natural woman as well too 😊😊
Never heard this song until I just watched Jakob Dylan’s documentary about the musicians in Laurel Canyon, “Echo In the Canyon.” (Which is worth watching, but you can’t help noticing it’s annoyingly skewed toward the men’ stories.) It’s a lovely song. I’ll now go check out the other versions as well.
The point is, the typical short version of the comments/opinions/recollections is "Carole King wrote this" which is half true. Same for Brian Wilson-- various lyricists worked with him but it usually comes out "Brian Wilson wrote this" Especially when the praise is for a sensitive, thoughtful story told in a song. All we know for sure about the COMPOSER is that they came up with the "la- la- la- da- dee-dee dah" part...
The music is the music. When it comes down to it, the words’ meanings don’t matter very much, not as much as the sounds. King had a great gift, Goffin a modest one.
He penned the words; she penned the music. The book "Girls Like Us" said Goffin was not happy that King wrote all the new songs on Tapestry without him, many with her own lyrics, and that the album stands as her greatest contribution to American popular music.
The components which makes *The* *Byrds* version(s) of this song so delightful : - *Red* *Rhodes* subtle steel guitar - *Van* *Dyke* *Parks* celesta I wonder why *Dusty* *Springfield* (or someone in her company) changed the lyrics slightly ?
Dusty's was before the Byrds... THEY seemed to look for something less girl-y. I suppose they consulted with Goffin & King to work something out. (From what I read, the very first artist to put out a record of this song got in trouble concerning the lyrics and it had to be withdrawn from the market.)
I agree with you. Of course it's a great song. Not only Carol King, obviously, but The Byrds, Dusty Sprinfield, and The Pretenders, all great, but the Nils Lofgren version is my favorite

Freddie Mercury did a great version as his death came near. It was poignant and very apt to his circumstances at the time.
