To better understand this important idea, I assembled a panel of systems thinkers:
RAPH KOSTER is the game designer behind such pioneering games as Ultima Online and Star Wars galaxies.

MIKE SELLERS is a game designer turned professor at Indiana University. Check out his book Advanced Game Design, a Systems Approach: amzn.to/35aInUW
DAN OLSEN started as an engineer designing submarines, and is now an expert in lean product development. Check out his book The Lean Product Playbook: amzn.to/2pWHuzj

This was great info too and reminded me about the time I was LTJG for the Naval Sea Cadet Corp training officer that my son was participating in as he was growing up. I can trully relate to the subs and have been on them myself when they were docked in Bremerton!! Systems is it!! Thanks again!! Love this stuff!!! My prototype has been ready, but this area has to fit properly to be effective. I am so excited that I just can't hide it!!! Thanks again.

i want to note that in the soccer example both of the mechanics - lose OR gain a player - are positive feedback loop. there both are getting far and far from the idle/ basic/ primer value of X (in this case it's players on your team). while a negative feed back loop will be something like, each time i kick a goal, the opposite team gets a new player, and i'm losing one. basically what i'm trying to say is that negative feedback loops don't have to be substractive, that's not what makes it negative feedback loop. it has to restrain the system to a specific parameter value, like the air conditioner thermostat.

Do you use Systems Thinking in your work? What about in your approach to life? tell me about it in the comments.

Great conversation clip, thanks! There is a fascinating intersection of systems modeling -- in the world of graph databases and analytics. The graph vendor world and developer community is growing in exciting ways. 'Knowledge Graphs' are still in early days of functionality but open up an interesting opportunity as a foundation for behavior change. I have a scenario that takes Experience data (via 'ExperienceAPI specification) and imagines a world where 'Experience Graph meets Knowledge Graph'. The assumption is we might soon move beyond our current Social Graph dominated world. What happens when we can graph protocols, processes and journeys using Knowledge and Experience Graphs. (A la Danny Hillis 'Learning Map') Graphs are pseudo- systems modeling platforms.
