Craig & Carey talk about their experiences growing up gay in Jamaica. Now 30 and living in NYC, they discuss how life is different for them, and what they have learned.

Although I'm dark, I grew up in Lagos, Nigeria and being dark and Yoruba was actually classier than being light. I think the reason is because it is culturally known that being Yoruba meant you were dark and the leadership and opportunities were centered around the Yoruba people.
I did not know black/white racism until I came to the US. Unfortunately, for me, it still feels weird to feel judged for being darker, when growing up, I was highly regarded for being a dark Yoruba person.
I still feel pretty good about my self, because every time I think of myself, I can only see myself from the point of view of when I was growing up with dignity,x respect and regard. Although I know many darker black Americans are looked down upon. I'm trying to come up with an online group that will incorporate Yoruba values that black people can utilize to help their self esteem.

Akindele Bankole I am shocked to read about 'skin complexion' being a Yoruba and Nigerian. You should be very proud. Nigeria is a beautiful country with all kinds of different complexion. In the Dominican Republic they also have all kinds of complexion And there some people there that are very ignorant not worth to pay attention to.

It's not true that if your light skinned in jamaica people look at you weird, my experience is different the darker ones to me want to be light skinned so they do alot of skin bleaching.

Carey and Craig. Oh boy here we go. I know these guys from high school in Jamaica. We were in the same 7th grade at KC. I was friends with both of them. They were fun guys and twins which made them kinda kool I guess. And yes they were chubby cuz ja’can man nuh call oda man Fat lol. As far as I remember they migrated after 7th grade(7 McDonald) which was around 1998 -1999 and I never saw them again until coincidentally I was watching that same episode of 106 and Park and I saw them. I was so shocked cus you know who would have known and as I said before we were friends and it was good to see them. Fast forward to this video that I jus stumbled on RUclips....this all all new to me. I had no idea they were gay in high school. NONE. No judgements here though. Carey n Craig. Big up unuhself. I’m gona choose to remember the good ole KC days. Fun. Laughter and wrestling lol. We all wanted to be Stone Cold Steve Austin. Peace ✌🏾

My brother-in-law was from Mandeville, Jamaica & I spent a Summer vacation at the Half Moon in Montego Bay 30 years ago. Russian car that my family rented broke down in Kingston. Got a real feel for the West Indian flavor of the Island.

I had a half brother who was also gay. I saw him being a little effeminate as a little boy, but, didn't know for sure until he entered college and came to visit. Unfortunately, he is gone and I wish I was there for him but I didn't know he was so sick. I do feel guilty that l wasn't there for him.
