I think this review sealed the envelope for me. From what I gather this is a sound signature ill probably enjoy a lot for metal and jazz, with gaming on the side
Glad to hear you like the sundara. if you wanted less high end, you probably would not have been a fan of the 5SE. thanks for the shoutout to the discord as well.
What I have found about myself over the years is that, while bass is nice, I always need to turn up the treble quite a bit if I am working with eq. I like crunchy, sparkly, crisp highs. I love U shaped sound signatures like what the THX00 from Fostex has, but if I had to choose between the two, id take a clinical listening experience over a muddy one.
I love my Sundara's and they are godly for gaming. I own the hd58x (among a dozen or so others) and these smoke them all for competitive gaming. The stock cable is garbage though. I had a beautiful custom one made. Great review none the less though. Love your channel bro keep up the great content and energy
@@StridahsAngels omg way more bro. Better soundstage, better accuracy and detail and most importantly waaaaay better Imaging and spacial awareness. The 598's are no slouch though. They are still quite good for gaming as well just the Sundara is a whole other league of it's own
@@StridahsAngels I've owned both of those you mentioned when I was first starting out trying to find an epic headphone for gaming without spending $500+. The Sundara are literally an unfair advantage lol. They pick up every single little detail you could ever imagine possible and their pinpoint Imaging is incredible when good soundstage. You won't be disappointed at all if you decide to invest in them. I will say the ath-ad700x does have slightly wider soundstage but the trade-off your making for 100% better detail retrieval and Imaging is well worth it. I have to ask though so you have a decent soundcard or amplifier or some sort? The Sundara are planar magnetic headphones and they do require a little more power to get good volume out of.
Well I got it all delivered, hooked up and WOW! These with the Schiit Magni and Modi make my old Sennheiser GSP600 and GSX1000 sound awful. Music is literally a whole new world. So glad I made the upgrade, and thanks to Brian P for the really informative videos on the Sundura and the Schiit stack! (and also the Razer Viper Ultimate...). This channel has cost me roughly £650 in the last few weeks, but I was looking to get a better audio setup and better mouse anyway :-)
i find the bass on the Sundara is just slightly more than the shp9500 which is very bass light, maybe i got a bad QC Sundara? idk, i just dont hear any "planar slams" that other reviews is talking about and even my cheap iem have stronger tighter beats
A great description. Excellent. I think. I’ve heard as many characterizations of the high frequencies as I’ve heard reviews. This is the first that I’ve heard characterized as crisply or as highly as yours. I’m guessing it comes down to the reviewers ears and brain, source and amplification. (Likely not the DAC). I’m hoping when I buy them shortly, they sound exactly as you describe, because that is what I am seeking; (.... since I own 4 pair of Sennheisers already.
New BadSeed Tech video? That's a watch and a like! Would you consider reviewing the Focal x Drop Elex? I'm seriously thinking of getting a pair (like added to my cart serious). DT1990 is a bit too bright for me plus I like that the Elex not only can be run balanced but comes with a balanced cable. They go down pretty deep especially for dynamic drivers.
@@badseedtech You also clearly know your cables (from your mouse and keyboard videos). You should check out Hart Audio Cables. All of their cables terminate in a mini-XLR (4pin) then you get a short adapter to go to the final connector you need (XLR, 4.4mm, 3.5mm, 2.5mm). At first this seems odd but I really like the flexibility. Wonder if they'd send you some for review :p
I have headphones ranging in price from around $300 to $1500 and the Sundara is one of my favorite ones. I've only had them for a little over a week but I've put over 20 hours of listening on them already. They're balanced with good speed and detail and also a nice size soundstage, for $350 new they're a must have.
Hey, a bit late to the party, but may I ask, how well they hold up until now? Realky thinking to get these as a first pair of hifi headphones, but there are quite some bad reports out there regarding build quality. Sound wise they seem to be perfect though
Currently using the dt990 pro paired with a gsx1000 and jds labs atom stack. Really satisfied with it for gaming but have been really curious about planar magnetic headphones lately. I'd like to try the audeze maxwell but it only comes in a closed back design. I find open back better because I used to get headaches after long sessions with closed back. Just curious on what your thoughts/recommendation is?
I’ve been watching a few of your videos... great stuff. As a PC gamer walking away from an Astro A40 kit, I really appreciated your comparison of this headphone to the 58x. I ordered my 58x and am now on the hunt for an amp/dac
Hi, I'm new to the audiophile scene. After doing a ton of research I decided to go with the Sundara and the Dragonfly Cobalt. Both of which I'm still waiting for. In the mean time I thought maybe you could answer a few questions. I'm going to be using my Xidax gaming desktop with an Asus Motherboard. I don't plan on using this setup with my Android phone. With that said did I make the right choice pairing the Sundara with the DF Blue? And also do you think I'm going to need an additional Amp? If so, which amp would you recommend in the $150-200 price range? I also would like to say Thank You for putting out some great review videos. I just subscribed and look forward to watching more in the future.
Damn i really want to buy this headphone since last year and been reading and watching reviews but was worried about the fit and sound quality coz i cant audition it. But today i visited my kocal audio stire and one of the attendants brought his sundara to the store paiered with schiit vali 2 and man the SOUND!!! I have a 6xx and i want to get a sundara for musicality 👌🔥🔥🔥
Been wanting to try these myself, love the vid as always! Have you considered trying out some dongle dacs for phones/daps? Hidizs makes a cheap one that's pretty good and there are more up to around $125ish which should really help these breathe a lot more on the go. I also wanted to ask if you start going more down the audio rabbit hole would you consider experiencing and talking about different op amps? I think a noob who wants to know a bit more about audio may appreciate that (I definitely would).
Fwiw, I have Sundaras and 4xx, and running through an Atom and D10 I prefer the 4xx for gaming, with the boost mode engaged on the Atom (which seems to bring the mids and highs up a touch)
I bought the HE350 from them following a LTT Massdrop ad and it was, by far, my worst headphone experience to date. Been nervous to try the brand since.
As someone who owns the he4xx's I think you should definitely give them a shot. They usually have QC issues when models first come out, but they usually get it under control and I've had my pair of he4xx's for months now with no issues.
@@chucotownchino2803 months isn't saying much. Headphones should last for years. My 650s are over 5 years old and still work great, it is yet to be seen if the new hifimans will hold up, same with these sundaras, which is why I won't bite the bullet until there is better analysis on their longevity.
@@zekion. Honestly, Hifiman got a lot better with QC over the years. Even some of their lower-tier products feel high quality nowadays. Plus, the Amazon return policy is still really good, so you can always just return it if it feels cheap or the sound doesn't work.
I would’ve loved to hear more about how these stack up against the DT1990, but, since you’re saying that the HD58X are the better choice, and that the DT1990 are better (all in reference to gaming, btw), I’m going to assume you prefer the Beyers over these just the same. Still, you get my thumbs up 👍🏾
Great Review 👏🏻 Agree that the 6XX veil sound signature and not quite details. I also love the DT770 closed back headphone which also give the outstanding soundstage. How about the Sundara compare to DT770? I love the DT770 but given to others after problem with the headband length feel hotspot. Is the Sundara also good in Soundstage which give the imaging out of our head kind of what DT770 present ? Thanks for advice.
Hey BadSeedTech please give me your thoughts on this. So I really want to get the HE4XX for like 80% gaming and 20% music (although the music DOES matter to me) I don't know what to get for a amp. I was thinking the Mayflower (mainly bc I'm a bass head and the dsp button sounds fun) What do you think I should get. I don't need a mic in bc I use a blue yeti. Is there a better combination you would recommend?
I had these for 5 months and they broke. Right ear jack started cutting out. Bummer because they are awesome and i never sent them back for RMA. I still have them and should get them fixed.
How would you compare these to the fidelio x2 HR? Worth the upgrade? I am powering my fidelios with the Fiio k5 Pro and they sound great but I am always looking for a way to get better, cleaner sound! Love your reviews!
Its a different sound, less bass and VERY clear highs where the Fidelio has airier, spacier highs. K5 Pro is VERY solid btw - just got mine this morning.
Hi! You guys might help me here. I bought the Sundarars and a Ifi Zen dac. I wanted to plug my headphones to the balanced output so I bought an extra 3.5mm female to 4.4mm male jack adaptater. The problem is that it got worse, so much worse... there was a buzz sound and the music got all messed up. Si I send back my adaptater thinking it had an issue... So my question is : is the Sundara stock cable balanced ? Do I just have to get a working 3.5mm to 4.4mm adaptater to use the Ifi zen dac balanced output? Thanks. Hope someone find this message
Would you say this one plus a IFI zen dac is better than the Maxwell? What I am asking is, does a decent DAC/pre amp does a big difference compare to an included amp in the Maxwell?
It would be nice having a segment like "Bedstories with Brian Phillips" with a relaxed gameplay or reading the saga of Gerald of Rivia aka witcher books...and also a 101 audio of "mastering your sound (EQ)"
The video that started me down this rabbit hole. Got these with a schiit magni hersey and modi 3E schiit stack. Now I have a pair of lcdx and a hifiman ef400 Dac/amp 😂
I loved your review on these and decided to buy them. What do I use to drive them? An amp? What's a reasonable amp I can get under $300? (Less if possible) I want to hear what you heard to review them.
I have no clue if this has already been said, but please try them on a balanced cable on the thx789. Almost every aspect of the headphone gets better. It's not a dealbreaker but a great upgrade
Honestly, I wish I could review everything but I'm just trying to burn off some of the backlog before I take on anything new. There's no way I could keep pace with someone like Z because my videos take considerably longer to produce.
Duppy I just got the BLON BL03. I’m using them for walking the dog and commuting. They’re good for the price but the absolutely need tip replacements (I’m using spinfit cp145. Some like foam tips but I feel bass and treble would be too much with foam. A bit of personal preference of course). I’m using a 2.5mm balanced cable to get the most of out of them. Not as required as the tips are. Again good for the price but I feel some people are hyping them up too much. If you know what sound signature you like you can always find something better. I’ve heard the Tin T2s are a better bargain as they come with a good cable and tips (though maybe a less fun frequency response than the blon bl03). But if you want good out of the box T2s are decent. I’ve heard the Tin T3s are too bright. They use a balanced amateur for the highs which does give more detail but it’s hard to do a good (read: accurate) crossover for the price point.
BadSeed Tech yeah I understand. I’m just looking to take a step away from earbuds and get my first set of iems and god knows I’ve already spent more than enough money on headphones, amps and dacs and seen a lot of hype for these cheap iems that I’m not fully convinced in but I’ve never had one of your reviews steer me wrong.
Snow Rang3r thanks for the detailed reply, like I said in other reply I’m new to iems so was just looking to dip my toe and saw all the hype around the blons but originally had my eyes on the t2s.
So are these better for gaming I really don't wanna spend double the price to deal with hifimans issues when it seems like a lot of people love the 4xx's
How come the HE-400x's aren't recommended for gaming? I find the imaging to be on par with the dt990 pros and you can always eq the treble up if you really need to, but I find the treble to be more than enough for CSGO or Escape from Tarkov
My favorite pair of gaming/music headphones are the Monolith M1060s open back. It would be awesome if you reviewed them. I’d like to know what you think :)
My end game finished at akg k712pro driven by meridian explorer 2 music and gaming is delightful on this setup It has all I wanted from my sound setup. What is your audio guys?
do you have plans to make a review of the DT 1770 Pro ? im curious of what you would think of them, i want new headphones and if im gonna spend a load of money on something i want it to be worth it. im used to close back headphones, dont like the sound im getting from open headphones.
The Dekoni Audio Elite Sheepskin Replacement Ear Pads for HiFiMan HE Series Headphones and More Can make the HIFIMAN sundara make them a have a bit more bass and still being amazing for gaming and music they ain't cheap but they're totally worth it for this especially if you have the 2020 revision or hopefully the future sundara stealth magnet edition
Trying to find a balanced cable for my Sundaras to use with Quidelix 5k. 3.5mm to 2.5mm balanced. Any ideas out there folks? I am based in Australia and hoping for something under $100
They're decent all-rounders if you really need a highly functional wireless set. They don't blow me away with audio quality but there really hasn't been another wireless set released that I would recommend over them.
you could/should probably compare them to the blon b20(you can them for 350 on drop). Both are open planars at the same price point although they sound different.
Warning to other users that wanna get HiFiMan ANYTHING be aware that mileage may vary, for Sundaras specifically there are some driver issues (mostly balance issues). I love mine even sending them for RMA and waiting for them, they are worth it. In comparison to my q701 I prefer the imaging more on the Sundaras, and I absolutely love the q701 as well. Get a replacement cable as well as these are fragile
I really wish they would focus up more on their QC. Its nice they addressed some of the build quality stuff here but these headphones sound too damn good to have units out there that are missing the mark on QC.

If you had to choose between this or the DT 1990, which one would you choose?
Hey BadSeedTech please give me your thoughts on this.
So I really want to get the HE4XX for like 80% gaming and 20% music (although the music DOES matter to me)
I don't know what to get for a amp. I was thinking the Mayflower (mainly bc I'm a bass head and the dsp button sounds fun)
What do you think I should get. I don't need a mic in bc I use a blue yeti.
Is there a better combination you would recommend?
Thank you, a gamer that reviewed these :)
*i find the bass on the Sundara is just slightly more than the shp9500 which is very bass light, maybe i got a bad QC Sundara? idk*
Thanks. Hope someone find this message
no
As always great video 👍
Would you say this one plus a IFI zen dac is better than the Maxwell? What I am asking is, does a decent DAC/pre amp does a big difference compare to an included amp in the Maxwell?
Just got mine. Definitely need some sort of burn in. Super harsh and high-end. Very Powershot hungry too. Has my fiio k11 at 80% on h gain.
It would be nice having a segment like "Bedstories with Brian Phillips" with a relaxed gameplay or reading the saga of Gerald of Rivia aka witcher books...and also a 101 audio of "mastering your sound (EQ)"
I don't know if I'm ready to dive into ASMR but I will definitely be doing a series on gear and techniques for production.
The video that started me down this rabbit hole. Got these with a schiit magni hersey and modi 3E schiit stack. Now I have a pair of lcdx and a hifiman ef400 Dac/amp 😂
what are your thoughts on the hi fi ananda
Hey! What Headphones would you recommend under 100$. I'd like one with best image and distance “precision”
I loved your review on these and decided to buy them. What do I use to drive them? An amp? What's a reasonable amp I can get under $300? (Less if possible) I want to hear what you heard to review them.
Schiit Magnius with a Modi and you'll be fine for a long time.
What's your current pick for a gaming headset?
If you had to recommend one?
I have no clue if this has already been said, but please try them on a balanced cable on the thx789. Almost every aspect of the headphone gets better. It's not a dealbreaker but a great upgrade
With that voice and that beard... You are destined for success! 👍
Please review the Focal Elex! 🙏
Ha, thanks! I'm getting a lot of requests for that one. I have it here so I'll start working on the review.
@@badseedtech u da best bro! 😘
Great video.
But i have a question can i pair the Sundara with a tube amp?
Should i get Sundara or 6XX?
So for listening, how do you rank DT 1990 Pro, 660S, or Sundara?
The short answer is that they're all very different so it depends more on what you like. Me personally? I would rank them 1990, Sundara, 660s
Ever considered reviewing some of the Chi-Fi stuff like blon bl 03 or tin hifi?
So are these better for gaming I really don't wanna spend double the price to deal with hifimans issues when it seems like a lot of people love the 4xx's
im really awake at 3:04 am to catch this video as it comes out. my insomniac ass needs help. i suppose it’s worth it for my boy brian though.
Appreciate you!
Any plans to review SMSL SP200 or M500 in the near future? Would wait to buy them after your review if it comes soon-ish
No plans as of yet. I need to form a relationship with SMSL bc I have to buy all their stuff currently.
how to do you plug the 4.4mm balanced new fantasia headphones into an audio interface with a 1/4 jack?
Since the GSX 1000 have a music EQ that adds a little more bass, would be good to pair the Sundara with them?
1990 pro v sundara for 1) comfort 2) sound for audio listening/editing
Hi, how is the combination of the sundara with the dragon fly cobalt?
How come the HE-400x's aren't recommended for gaming?
I find the imaging to be on par with the dt990 pros and you can always eq the treble up if you really need to, but I find the treble to be more than enough for CSGO or Escape from Tarkov
How do I find short adapter cable for it
I already have good coiled cable I like to use, just need something to connect it.
DT1990 and Sundara, which one is better?
My favorite pair of gaming/music headphones are the Monolith M1060s open back. It would be awesome if you reviewed them. I’d like to know what you think :)
How do you store your headphones? Do you have a rack or shelf
My end game finished at
akg k712pro driven by meridian explorer 2 music and gaming is delightful on this setup It has all I wanted from my sound setup. What is your audio guys?
Would the ifI zen dac 2 be all I need for dac/amp for these? Thanks
do you have plans to make a review of the DT 1770 Pro ? im curious of what you would think of them, i want new headphones and if im gonna spend a load of money on something i want it to be worth it. im used to close back headphones, dont like the sound im getting from open headphones.
I've reviewed the 177X GO. Currently don't have any plans to review the 1770 Pro as its just not in the budget atm.
@@badseedtech Ok, thanks for answering :)

The Dekoni Audio Elite Sheepskin Replacement Ear Pads for HiFiMan HE Series Headphones and More
Can make the HIFIMAN sundara make them a have a bit more bass and still being amazing for gaming and music they ain't cheap but they're totally worth it for this especially if you have the 2020 revision or hopefully the future sundara stealth magnet edition
I’ve got a question.
What are the best headphones to listen to you’r videos with
No idea. I try not to listen to my own videos.
Trying to find a balanced cable for my Sundaras to use with Quidelix 5k. 3.5mm to 2.5mm balanced. Any ideas out there folks? I am based in Australia and hoping for something under $100
Curious if you still use the Arctis Pro Wireless? Or would you recommend them still as the one-all pc, casual, and commuter pair.
Don't get them, just get an actual good amp and dac and headphone.
They're decent all-rounders if you really need a highly functional wireless set. They don't blow me away with audio quality but there really hasn't been another wireless set released that I would recommend over them.
How would that work as a wireless commuter setup?
If I plugged these in to my Xbox controller will they work if not how can I get them to work is there a work around??
Would you upgrade hd6xx to these or keep the hd6xx?
you could/should probably compare them to the blon b20(you can them for 350 on drop).
@@badseedtech I agree, even if I RMA mine a bunch, they are some of the most natural headphones I've used in a while.
narrowed my choices down to the sundara and 400i 2020 revision for gaming and general music. i cannot decide :D
What did you get ? :)
@@warava9780 well. i did go with 400i 2020 and enjoyed it, but the headband didn't agree with me so i sent them back for anandas. which are amazing but then i got a th-x00 mahogony which i love for music so now im going to sell the anandas for a super lightweight/comfy open back for gaming only lol
@@dufootball26 lol so you basiclly didnt like hifiman at all right?
@@warava9780 i did actually. the anandas are amazing. i just cant justify the cost for having multiple expensive headphones when i like the th-x00 a little better for music
@@dufootball26 oh, enjoy your end game :)
