I am SO grateful to you Chris for being such an amazing scholar and great teacher. I would probably not have gotten into astrology if it wasn't for you. Modern astrology never resonated with me, but when I began listening to your podcast it all clicked - I had been looking for traditional astrology all along! I also appreciate that although you have preferences of style, you are so very respectful of all styles and encourage all your students to also be respectful and see value in the differences. We need that so much! I will try to live by your example. Thank you!
Thanks a lot… I started watching this episode 10 minutes ago and already feeling thankful. You are so clear when you speak, when you teach… English is not my native language so I really appreciate your clarity (and also your knowledge and how you share it).
You are doing work for astrology that will be appreciated and remembered forever... it is so inspiring how one determined and passionate person can weave together the tapestry an entire field of study. I love that you are bringing everyone together to have conversations that enlighten us on all the faces of what astrology is and can be.
Chris-I can’t tell you how much this lecture meant to me. I am so glad I found it. I am a psychotherapist and founder of the nation’s first LGBT Specialization in Clinical Psychology. I have just DISCOVERED astrology the past two years and your podcasts have helped enormously to inspire and clarify. I myself have become more active in my social media as I seek to return to my publishing life that I had before I became a psychologist for the community. I had a powerful dream last night as I was moving in and out of your lecture about the work and it focused on my learning from a very wise person about astrology. Anyway, I believe I will do a podcast reviewing your lecture here on “The History of Astrology” to honor your work. If I do, I will make sure you get it. I am on substack and will keep you updated. With much respect, Douglas Sadownick
Chris... seriously amazing. I've learned so much from this video. In all my years of study I've never heard all this explained so clearly. Love your ideas for moving forward... totally agree.

I'll see what I can do at some point. It is tricky because those approaches are very different than most of the forms of western astrology, and I'm not very familiar with them. Plus it is hard knowing who is a good authority in that field.

This was a wonderful lecture, thank you. Your reminder about humility and respect within the community and the role of astrologers continuing this movement is really quite beautiful. I'm also grateful for the recommendations of where translation is still needed because I'd love to brush up on those skills and take part. I completed graduate studies concentrating on the Near East, mostly working with Greek and Arabic, with Arabic being my stronger language, but I left academia to follow other pursuits. I've been studying astrology for a few years but only recently began diving into the classical works, so this is a good push to have something to work towards. I could never quite fully put away that incredible period and move on, so it's nice to think I might one day have a go at translating again. What an outstanding overview. This video game me a much deeper understanding and appreciation for where astrology is and where it came from as well as how important it is to be thoughtful in being a part of its evolution.
Thank you so much for this episode, utterly enjoyed it and learned a lot. Really helps me to contextualize astrology. I think it is so important to have some sense or idea of the history of astrology, to see the different ways and frameworks people throughout time have used to interpret the world around them, specifically the heavens. Also makes you really appreciate the genius of this long line of astrologers and how cool it is that we still have these records of the past. It's clear from listening to this talk that astrology is not a static thing or system, but rather an approach to divining the heavens and extracting the information we want and need out of it, and that this changes as our culture and understanding of the world changes. So I feel like astrology is more of an art than a science, although it is definitely in a huge and substantial part also the latter.

This was so good on so many levels. I realize it was an overview but what an overview! I'm a history buff, and agree that if we don't know where we came from, we won't have a clear view of where we're going. Also, I didn't realize Mercury rules Astrology. I'd always understood that it was Uranus, Neptune or even Jupiter. Mercury makes sense because of the Hermetic relation.
Beautiful presentation, great re🙏search 👍you have masterfully condensed and decoded this complex subject into a enjoyable podcast video episode 🎉 thank you🙏
I wanna say thank you for youtube recommend you channel. The history about astrology its very nice to ear. Your channel is very cleaver. And abiousvly you can only be a virgo.
The other day I finished your book! I've learned incredibly with you Chris, and your mates. I'm into astrology roughly since 1 year and half and I felt that something went wrong without the traditional view... I'm Spanish and I have to thank to the Argentinian astrologer María Blaquier who introduced me in this new-but-ancient world. Check her out on RUclips, she has discussed examples of horary astrology in English with Anthony Louis.
I just finished the episode. Absolutely profound your ability to tie it all together. Your speech at the end was incredibly sobering and so important. I never even thought of it that way... I think of life that way all the time..but not in the context of astrology as a whole.
One minor correction: twas enmities not enemies from what I saw. Enmities being, hostilities between people even if otherwise close. So far, around 45 min in, this is great!
Chris when you are doing a podcast on integration and synthesis with vedic....I would like to contribute my theories on possible ways of integration of vimshottari dasa and nakshatras with hellinistic traditional astrology using tropical zodiac🎉🙏
Chris, I suggest you get in touch with Nietzsche, Freud, Lacan, Derrida and Deleuze to understand the paradigm of the 20th century in terms of conditions of subjectivity. I get the feelling your methology is archive based in an estructuralistic manner leaving behind the depth of a paradigm. Thema Mundi in the end focuses on the universe in a mammal point of view wether in the 20th century, focusing in aries as the beggining assumes a non human centered point of view, to mention a few great differences that are not cuantificable, like a mere opposite or equivalent table but a jump into another conception. It did not start with the hippies in the usa. Thank you for your engagement.
Thank you, Chris! 24:49 Just wanna add that you forgot to mention it was due to colonization that english spread so much as well, not only the exporting of US culture, since english is not among the native languages to the US territory. Just like in those times, colonization imposes the language of the opressor on the oppressed and after a while ppl think it’s normal that everyone is speaking it.
I'm at like 33: in, and, if you ever rework this video, having things highlight on screen when they are said would be ever so helpful! And I at this point I'm still not sure what "retrograde" means. That said, thanks v much anyway, super informative, integrative and insightful stuff :)
I have a question that freaks out my astrology teacher... "What will happen with Astrology as we know it when people start being born in the moon or mars? I think that comes with the future of astrology.
@Enrique Fernández M. yours is an excellent question! An astrologers' "round table" discussion has already addressed this issue: ruclips.net/video/2S_zkIViFYM/видео.html
Very insightful and valuable, as usual, Chris. Thanks. But i have to mention (because it was inexplicably omitted in the video) that the Iberian Peninsula consists of Spain and Portugal. In reality, Portugal it's not only much older that Spain, but it's the country with the oldest established and immutable borders in the world (almost 900 years ...) and, if countries were ordered by seniority, Portugal (1143) would only be supplanted by Eastern empires (which seem immune to time) and by England (1066). Finally, as i'm sure you also know, Portugal has one of the richest and more influential histories in the expansion (the Portuguese explorers were responsible for discovering more than 70% of the world previously unknown to Europeans) and development of the world until the times in which we live today (This is not patriotism...only true and important historical facts).
I kinda agree. I'm from the Philippines and the first European who circumnavigated the world-Ferdinand Magellan/Fernando Magallanes-was from Portugal who sailed under the Spanish flag and landed here in Cebu, Philippines. Next year, we will celebrate our 500 years of Christian Evangelization here in the Philippines which started in 1521 when Fernando Magallanes landed here in the Philippines.
Let me know if you have any questions or if there are any other areas of the history of astrology that you would like to see me cover in future videos!

Your work is importsnt to so many of us 🙌🏼
I just finished the episode.
Thank you so much!
Chris looks similar to me and that was actually my birth name (Chrissy) loving tf outta these looooong videos whenever I get time to listen!
That was great! 🌌
Muchas gracias.
What happens if you are an astronaut and pass your bd in the moon !
@Enrique Fernández M. yours is an excellent question! An astrologers' "round table" discussion has already addressed this issue: ruclips.net/video/2S_zkIViFYM/видео.html
When will your book be translated into french, it would be such a treasure for astrology here in france, thank you for your work
Very insightful and valuable, as usual, Chris.
