People sleep on Hi Fi Rush! That game is a serious GOTY contender I think and was an amazing start to the year for Xbox (until they ruined it with red fall lmao). I've never really had that sort of "wow, this year is actually insane" until this year, even if I'm not interested in some of the games, I know alot of other people are. Some of the one's I've been playing which weren't mentioned in the video is Darkest Dungeon 2, Armored Core 6 (Which I'm currently playing through) and especially Lies Of P, holy damn Lies Of P is an amazing soulslike.
Mario is popping off SO HARD this year, we STILL HAVE Mario RPG left this year, and then we’re getting a fucking TTYD REMAKE This is a wonderful time to be a Mario fan
Yeah and us fnaf fans are eating well too. We got fnaf ruin, the fnaf movie, help wanted 2, a tales from the pizzaplex story that apparently solves midnight motorists, Freddy in space 3, and Funkin at Freddy’s night 2 (a really awesome upcoming Fnf mod that is really awesome and has a world map and is just really cool)
I mean it isn’t surprising since smaller games don’t tend to get review bombed. And GOTY is all about popularity anyway, Spider-Man has a higher chance of being a contender for simply being more popular
@@ZiyadAl-Atherah neither game is out yet so it's the critic scores people are comparing. That being said, I think they are around the same quality, but people were not expecting much from a 2d mario game near the end of the switches life while spiderman 2 is the ps5 system seller with no other exiting ps5 games coming until 2025, so the reviews are probably skewed towards mario.
This year feels like the true industry comeback after the pandemic hit, and HOLY has it been a comeback and a half. From surprise hits like Pizza Tower and Baldur's Gate to the obvious heavy hitters like Mario Wonder and Spider-Man and the absolute slam dunks that come once in a blue moon like Tears of the Kingdom, we've got all of it and everything in between. We still have a little bit left as well, Like a Dragon Gaiden is probably gonna do well critically and the fans will eat it up as usual, Mario RPG is Mario RPG, Persona 5 Tactica is gonna be a great game for me because it's bringing back my favorite Persona character of all time, and risking the biggest jinx of all time, Silksong technically could still release this year. My GOTY isn't actually a game that released this year, it's Persona 4 Golden, but on that topic this year has been HUGE for ports and remasters as well! Metroid Prime, Kirby's Return to Dream Land, Fatal Frame, Persona 3/4, We Love Katamari, Resident Evil 4 remake, Dead Space remake, Advance Wars 1+2, freaking GHOST TRICK, it's been a wild year for ports and remakes. Not to mention some of the lesser known or not as critically acclaimed games like Fire Emblem Engage, Hi-Fi Rush, Starfield (fits in that second group), Bayonetta Origins, Star Wars Jedi Survivor, Humanity (by the Tetris Effect guys, go play it), and Blasphemous 2. Some more that I forgot and can't fit anywhere else, Final Fantasy 16, Pikmin 4, Armored Core 6, Lies of P, Street Fighter 6, Diablo 4 (although that one hasn't been the best recently), Hogwarts Legacy, Darkest Dungeon 2, Wo Long Fallen Dynasty, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, Sea of Stars, Mortal Kombat 1, Assassin's Creed Mirage, Forza Motorsport, Sonic Superstars, and that's JUST games that have already come out and the ones I can find with a quick Google search. I could fully recommend any of these games to SOMEBODY out there, every game I've listed here could be considered at the very least "pretty good" by someone and most of them could be someone's GOTY. Sure, we've had misses like Gollum and Forspoken, but a few duds shouldn't take away from a year this strong otherwise. A ton of people are being pessimistic about the future of gaming with stuff like battle passes and heavy monetization, but it's a LOT harder for me to think that way personally when I see a list like this where nearly ever game is pretty darn good.
listen i love your comment but when you said “Silksong could still come out this year” all I could think is “where does this person source their copium” 😂
armored core 6 came out too and its so good. You should definitely try it someday. some people may not like the story because its mainly told through dialogue but I personally enjoy it
my personal choice for game of the year would be yomi hustle, it's basically a turn-based pvp stickman fight choreographer, where you and another person select actions and try and predict each other's moves, dancing around each other's attacks and pulling off super cool combos, and when the match ends you get to see the whole thing played back in real time which is an absolute treat every single time. Currently there are only 4 playable characters in the base game, but there are also hundreds of modded characters, inlucing goku and broly from dbz, v1 from uktrakill, kirby, michael jackson, the rock hard gladiators from the og stickman fight animations, and heaps of awesome original characters too. And did I mention the game is only 5$ on steam, and the old beta version is free? Go check it out now it's incredibly good
Another reason why this year is a great year for video games: Alien Hominid For those people who don't know, Alien Hominid was a game from the early 2000's and was a hit, made by the legendary Behemoth team. They are releasing a remaster on PC plus a sequel on November 1st, and seriously recommend trying the game out, along with Castle crashers, Battleblock theatre, and Pit People. I recommend trying out these games!
the best part is that Behemoth is making a new game that releases the FIRST OF NOVEMBER! Castle Crashers was my childhood man, so the hype i feel for the new Alien hominid is unreal.
You didn't even mention Lies of P. I've been playing it recently and it has the same amount of quality that is usually only reserved for Fromsoftware games, it's truly a worthwhile experience to get immersed in for around 25 hours or so. Obviously as a disclaimer, this game is hard as balls, but like really, if you do get into it, try to really enjoy the atmosphere, the details, the extremely sad yet mature world.
It may be a remake, but Ghost Trick is the most enthralling mystery game I've played in my life Never before have I played a game where every aspect was working together in such perfect harmony PLEASE check it out, it is on basically every platform, there's a lengthy demo available, it doesn't over stay its welcome It is absolutely worth your time, one of my few 10/10 games

This year has been an absolute gem for games. There's so many I've still got to get around to playing because I've been so busy but here are a few that I managed to play that you missed. Zortch: A quake inspired retro boomer shooter with many call backs to the 90s. I know a lot of these have been coming out recently but here me out. Zortch is a game that consists of five episodes each containing three levels and a boss. The story is very simple, you play as Zorch. The worlds number one slacker who falls for a cheap holiday scam and ends up captured by aliens who want to eat her brain. The game doesn't take itself seriously and there's a lot of things that are deliberately goofy in the game. Such as it being implied the aliens use a giant loony tunes styled magnet to capture space ships. As for gameplay it's a lot like quake with fast movement and powerful weapons. Unlike many boomer shooters however there are a few weapons that are more than the typical shotgun, smg and snipers (though the game does have those as well and they all have great feedback). There's a laser that works kind of like a beefed up version of the glueon gun from half life that's super overpowered. There's a pistol that lets you make shields that negates damage and there is a hybrid rocket launcher/grenade launcher that is super fun to use. One of the best things about this game however is the price. It's £5 and you get over 6 hours of fun out of it not including extra stuff like secret hunting. For the budget gamer this one is a must play or for any fps gamer as a matter of fact. En Guard: A fast paced third person action game that focuses on dodging, parrying and using the environment to you're advantage. I've seen some call this a souls like but I honestly disagree as there's no RPG elements, character builds, bomb fires or fantasy elements. Instead I'd say this game is closer to Sekiro as you have fast movement, platforming and a focus on personally getting better with the moves you start with rather than grinding for stronger gear. Combat in this game mostly involves using a sword to damage enemy's then parrying the correct attacks to break enemy stances and take them off guard. Not all attacks can be parried so you will need to doge these. Sometimes you may also need to parry more than once depending on the enemy type. As for using the environment there are items you can pick up or interact with that have effects on enemy's. These range from normal things like bombs or powders that damage/confuse enemy's to other more creative things like a bucket you can throw on there head to blind them or tables you can kick to knock them back. One thing I will warn about this game however is that it does have a fair few very sudden difficulty spikes. In particular there is one boss you fight in the third episode who requires almost pixel perfect play and I'd argue is way harder than anything else in the game.
Completely forgot about En Garde despite putting it in my Steam wishlist. Thanks for the recommendation to others for what looks to be an incredibly promising game, and for the reminder for me to actually get to playing it
You didn’t mention Final Fantasy XVI, I would at least play the demo. Def GOTY contender. I’m personally most excited for the TTYD remake but I doubt remakes win things
Yeah this new genretion of PS5, and Xbox Series has been phenomenal. This gen is gonna be legendary based on this year alone. Literally game of the year masterpiece every single month.
pizza tower in particular managed to get a painfully forced tiktok brainrot-shaped tumor in its fandom in under a month, and the actually bearable side didn't even get drowned out by those zombies that's two achievements reserved only for the best of the best
@@ConsarnitTokkoriActually, from what I've seen, the Pizza Tower fandom was so scared of having a "cringy fandom" that they literally were complaining about the simplest of things, causing people to leave because of how annoying it could be at times. But I could be misremembering things.
I have joked around saying WHAT ABOUT GOLLUM OR KING KONG SKULL ISLAND but like tbh this year was phenomenal spiderman 2 and pizza tower alone SOLOD EDIT im so sorry i forgot hifi rush that shi WAS PERFECTION TOO
I'll never understand how ppl look at the lineup of games this year and still make those clickbaity "modern gaming is dead" videos, like just play different games lmao
Sea of stars is my GOTY. Its the gift that keeps on giving, and expands on a story that i fell in love with. I seriously cant wait for sabotages next game.
Xbox game presentation just happened and even more games announced! Metal gear gameplay trailer, THE FINALS OPEN BETA/CROSS PLATFORM ANNOUNCEMENT, ETC. At the end of the indie horror GAME showcase, A NEW AMANADA HORROR GAME TRAILER!
Doesn’t stop either. Laika: Aged Through Blood is an absolute banger and got that Trials Fusion gameplay I can’t get enough of. Just released too. So many good options like holy hell.
Biggest part of indie games for this year is geometry dash's update 2.2 FINALLY coming out this month as its been in development since 2017 Edit: fuck nevermind its november
My favorite indie games this year that no one talks about is baldur's gates 3 and tears of the kingdom good thing that spider man 2 get some recognition it deserves after the release tho.
There’s also dead island 2 + it’s first dlc, Pokémon scarlet and violet teal mask dlc and December 14 with the indigo disk. Geometry dash 2.2 is also planned for this month. There is also sonic superstars, waves 3-6 of the bcp, SpongeBob SquarePants the cosmic shake, and hogwarts legacy. Also Kirby’s return to dreamland deluxe and Alan wake 2, and payday 3. And how could we forget the most important game of the year… 1 2 SWITCH 2!!!
One upcoming game I’m looking forward to this year is Alien Hominid Invasion. I played the demos as they were open, and good lord is it fun. Accommodating for all skill levels, plus just entirely goofy, it is the ultimate Behemoth experience, barring playing Castle Crashers insane mode with friends.
So many good games this year and even some that got me to play other games i slept on eg: totk got me to play botw, starfield got me to play fallout 3, new vegas and 4. Fallout 4 is now my favourite game of all time please dont hurt me, but this year had some amazing games
Man I feel bad for Hifi Rush, Cuz that game is a straight up BANGER, and it got Shadowdropped. Its a really good game and is GOTY for me. Sure Spider man 2, Super mario wonder, Pizza Tower, and LOZ is there but Hifi rush has music That BEATS every game that comes out this year HANDS DOWN.
On the RPG front, there was Sea of Stars and FF16. Absolutely love sea of stars personally. It was made by sabotage studio who made the messenger. Love what they do.
@@TheRealF.ckingJesus holy shit. That’s hilarious because I’m literally on my second playthrough of the game! How DID I forget that??? I think sometimes my brain simply doesn’t think of bg3 as an rpg because it’s so different from anything I’ve personally played before. I want to go back and Play Divinity Original Sin 2 now because I love larian studios now. I cant fucking believe I forgot THE game of the year.
its like all these games are coming out and are banger after banger and then theres people like me who play league of legends ignoring everything and suffering with their silly little moba

Speaking of great game remakes let's not forget System Shock. In general, this has been a great year for retro FPS games, with the release of HROT, Turbo Overkill and WH40K - Boltgun and the new DLCs for Amid Evil and Ion Fury. And there are still potentially good games to look forward too (the sequels to Ghostrunner and The Talos Principle, Robocop Rogue City etc.)
Modern gaming always has been great people just are biased towards old ips and focus on negatives best examples is 2017 and even last year is crazy I guess people didn't knew until this year that the amount of good games is very hard to be ignorant about.
Not really missing something but Geometry Dash 2.1 will get an Update after 6 years and Pixel Gun 3D a childhood game of mine was revealed coming to PC but sadly it will come next year.
the fact fact that we had a mix of the best games, mediocre games, terrible games that can compete with old terrible game in one year is crazy
Huh
At least 2D indie platforer OTY
I guess a lot of big releases delayed by COVD ended up being done this year

Yeah and I can’t wait for peach showtime and hopefully fnf the full ass game
You didn’t mention Final Fantasy XVI, I would at least play the demo. Def GOTY contender. I’m personally most excited for the TTYD remake but I doubt remakes win things
*looks at gollum and kong in the corner*
*looks back* yes....insane...
Whatever happened to enchanted portals?
Yeah this new genretion of PS5, and Xbox Series has been phenomenal. This gen is gonna be legendary based on this year alone. Literally game of the year masterpiece every single month.
there’s also many older games that came back like tf2 hitting its new peak player count and titanfall 2 finally getting its multiplayer fixed
This years good and bad at the same time… and I enjoy that
pizza tower in particular managed to get a painfully forced tiktok brainrot-shaped tumor in its fandom in under a month, and the actually bearable side didn't even get drowned out by those zombies
that's two achievements reserved only for the best of the best
@@ConsarnitTokkoriActually, from what I've seen, the Pizza Tower fandom was so scared of having a "cringy fandom" that they literally were complaining about the simplest of things, causing people to leave because of how annoying it could be at times. But I could be misremembering things.
I have joked around saying WHAT ABOUT GOLLUM OR KING KONG SKULL ISLAND but like tbh this year was phenomenal spiderman 2 and pizza tower alone SOLOD EDIT im so sorry i forgot hifi rush that shi WAS PERFECTION TOO
Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is definitely the GOTY to me.
Geometry dash 2.2 is even coming out in a few weeks, it's been 7 years
Also alien hominid invasion by the behemoth is coming out very soon!
The game awards is gonna have hard time this year. But I’m for sure team Zelda TOTK
"Amnesia: The Bunker" was also really good. I would gladly recommend it. Especially that "The Halloween Update" for this game is around the corner
My life will never be complete, without Foekoe talking about Deep Rock Galactic.
Rock and Stone
Rock and stone!
if ye dont rock n stone ya aint comin home
rock and stone
i haven't even played deep rock galactic
We're rich
We fight for rock and stone!
There's been so many good games this year.
This week is also a week for gaming. SONIC SUPERSTARS, MARIO BROS WONDER and Marvel's Spiderman 2
This year also revives fighting games, capcom is consistent this year
Xbox game presentation just happened and even more games announced! Metal gear gameplay trailer, THE FINALS OPEN BETA/CROSS PLATFORM ANNOUNCEMENT, ETC.
At the end of the indie horror GAME showcase, A NEW AMANADA HORROR GAME TRAILER!
Pizza Tower is still GOTY for me, the pizza is just that amazing
this has been possibly best year in gaming EVER.
We live in a world where we can get one of the greatest games of all time one week, and lord of the rings gollum the next
It's great how well gaming is doing cause the other mediums of entertainment haven't been doing so well
Bro do not sleep on alien hominid invasion
Doesn’t stop either. Laika: Aged Through Blood is an absolute banger and got that Trials Fusion gameplay I can’t get enough of. Just released too.
So many good options like holy hell.
For 2024 I’m REALLY looking forward to playing Mina the Hollower, but MAN 2023 has been a great year
Biggest part of indie games for this year is geometry dash's update 2.2 FINALLY coming out this month as its been in development since 2017
Edit: fuck nevermind its november
Or is it...
Nah it's coming in November
Mannnn I hate RopTop
Late October or Early November
@@noopplayer._.4811Mannnn I love RobTop
My inner pikmin fan felt joy when i heard that name
Both the greatest and worst, the Indie scene has really shined this year.
And how could we forget the most important game of the year… 1 2 SWITCH 2!!!
the lack of Pikmin 4 on the thumbnail disappoints me
Not coming this year but pretty soon we got ANTONBLAST to play, which looks amazing and the demo shows the game is gonna go down a good path
Yeah and let’s not forget Friday night funkin.
1998 was probably the best year for video games ever
You missed out on Cassette Beast, Gravity Circuit and of course Sea Of Stars🤩🤩🤩
And also risk of rain returns, it will launch this year, can't wait!
I can't wait for Risk of Rain : Returns and Geometry dash 2.2
The wait for 2.2 is almost over and that feels unreal
@@rafaelemerencio1000same bro same. I thought I’d be in my 90’s when it releases, slowly going insane in a nursing home
You missed ghostrunner 2
not only 2023, looking at 2024 calendary with stuff like switch 2, this really looks like the golden era of videogames
On the RPG front, there was Sea of Stars and FF16. Absolutely love sea of stars personally. It was made by sabotage studio who made the messenger. Love what they do.
How can you forget Bg3???
@@TheRealF.ckingJesus holy shit. That’s hilarious because I’m literally on my second playthrough of the game! How DID I forget that??? I think sometimes my brain simply doesn’t think of bg3 as an rpg because it’s so different from anything I’ve personally played before. I want to go back and Play Divinity Original Sin 2 now because I love larian studios now.
I cant fucking believe I forgot THE game of the year.
its like all these games are coming out and are banger after banger and then theres people like me who play league of legends ignoring everything and suffering with their silly little moba
Is this Game of the Year, or Year of the Game?
Year of the game.
Armoured core 6 is really really good especially the pvp
There was also the Slender The Arrival remaster which is so good and it came out on october 18th (2 days ago)
Glad to see the internets 2nd favorite horror icon (Freddy holds 1st) return.
I'll be dissapointed if Pizza Tower doesn't get Indie game of the year
Don’t forget the indie game Laika: aged through blood! Think It released yesterday.
Tf2 getting an update alone is enough to make this year insane
Yeah and geometry dash 2.2 actually being really close makes it even better
too many games. very good though.
6:11 HE DIDNT FORGET IT
It made me happy that he knows about such a gem of a game franchise
@@John_OrangeFish same
Ok so hear me out: 2017 was a good year for games, 2023 is a good year for games, Hollow Knight came out in 2017, Silksong will be shadow dropped tomorrow 🤡🤡🤡
i know it's not very popular but i LOVE killer frequency, it came out a few months ago and it's easily one of my top 3 or 5 favorite games, but other than some letsplays i haven't seen anything about it, which is really disappointing (the ost isn't even available off youtube and it's incredible!)
I wish Pizza Tower to get Tga indle game award.
just wait until silksong comes out this year 🙏(coping)
Its never coming out brother, accept it
let cherry cook@@athan_valentine
If silksong gets released this year, I think the universe might collapse.
Silksong doesn't exist
Yeah it’s already awesome gd 2.2 is coming in November (it was going to be October, but there were some bugs)
Its not real its all in your head
the issue is, there’s no creative new games. they’re all either remakes, remasters or sequels.
Ironic how it has been 40 years since the video game crash of '83 and now we have a somewhat "golden year of gaming."
Modern gaming always has been great people just are biased towards old ips and focus on negatives best examples is 2017 and even last year is crazy I guess people didn't knew until this year that the amount of good games is very hard to be ignorant about.
I'm pumped for WarioWare: Move It! tbh also bro forgot to peep Sonic Superstars damn :(
The year was so good you still manage to forget great games. You could've easily bundled Dead Space alongside Metroid Prime and Quake II.
Also there is gravity circut wich is megaman but more modern and with more fun mechanics
Blasphemous 2 is also an awesome game and came out in August.
2023 is the new 2007 for the gaming Industry
GHOSTRUNNER
STOP RUNNING
Like a Dragon Gaiden is coming out next month…..
Even thou it's still in early acces i'll just say: ULTRAKILL (it's really good)
Not really missing something but Geometry Dash 2.1 will get an Update after 6 years and Pixel Gun 3D a childhood game of mine was revealed coming to PC but sadly it will come next year.
I guess modern gaming doesn’t suck. This year is probably the best year within the last who knows how many years and 2024 will have gta 6 sooooo.
