  • Watchmen: Damon Lindelof Interview (Spoiler-Free)
Let’s get this out of the way first: Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen is incredible. In this era of exceptional television, Watchmen is near the top. One of the main reasons why Lindelof’s series is so amazing is that he’s taken his love of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Hugo Award-winning graphic novel and created a completely new story that absolutely feels like Watchmen - but is its own thing. The series, like the original comic, has a lot to say about the state of the world and each episode is absolutely loaded with so much world building that I can’t wait to rewatch every episode as they air on HBO Sunday nights (I’ve already seen the first six). Another thing about HBOs Watchmen that’s so well done is the show absolutely works if you’ve never read the graphic novel, but if you have, it’s even better. I could go on and on about the extraordinary performances by the entire cast, the unbelievable music by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, the incredible cinematography and direction, the brilliant writing, or how the production design makes you feel like you’re actually there, but I’ll just say I strongly recommend tuning in to HBO this Sunday night for the premiere episode.
With the show getting ready to premiere, I had the fortune of sitting down with Damon Lindelof yesterday for an extended spoiler-free interview about the making of the show. During the thirty-five minute conversation, he revealed a tremendous amount about why he finally agreed to take on the material, why it’s nine episodes, his love of Watchmen and how he credits the comic with influencing what he did on Lost, what he learned making The Leftovers that he applied to making Watchmen, how Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Atlantic essay ‘The Case for Reparations’ influenced the writing, how he landed Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for the score, what Ed Brubaker told him after seeing the pilot, if he has any interest in adapting Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns as a limited series on HBO, and more. In addition, I also brought up if he’d be interested in doing Watchmen season two and he talked about his reasoning why someone else should tackle it and why he could or could not do it.
Check out what Damon Lindelof had to say in the player above and below is exactly what we talked about.
    Damon Lindelof:
    • How did he land this project with HBO?
    • His long love of Watchmen and how he credits the comic with influencing what he did on Lost.
    • Was the HBO series ever radically different than what it ended up?
    • How Ta-Nehisi Coates essay in the Atlantic titled The Case for Reparations influenced the writing.
    • What he learned making The Leftovers that he applied to making Watchmen?
    • Did he write with any sort of budget in mind?
    • How he told HBO early on that Watchmen would take place over the course of 100 years.
    • How he landed Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for the score.
    • How Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross sent in a number of things before filming began on the pilot and they played it on set and it informed decisions on set.
    • How he put together the writings room to do the world building.
    • Did he ever think HBO wouldn’t make the show after shooting the pilot?
    • How the HBO series Watchmen is a complete story.
    • How they shot all of Jeremy Irons in Whales before shooting anything else due to weather concerns.
    • Does he have any ideas for a Watchmen season 2?
    • Does he have any interest in adapting Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns as a limited series on HBO?
    • How he’d love to see Michael Keaton or Christian Bale wait 25 years and then play Batman in The Dark Knight Returns.
    • Did they have a lot of deleted scenes in Watchmen?
    • Who did he show the pilot to for honest feedback?
    • He reveals what Ed Brubaker told him after seeing the pilot.
    • Did he ever think of doing more than 9 episodes?

This was such a great interview. It's refreshing to see a interviewer that can actually stay quiet and let the person they are interviewing actually speak and get their point across without the host butting in and cutting them off every 30 seconds. That is one of the many reason I can't really watch late night tv shows. Also really want to go and watch The Leftovers now.

I live a mile from black wallstreet (greenwood st.) I saw a comment saying the riot scene was over glorified, hyped. It was way worse than shown. Lasted 2 days. The national guard assisted the aggressors .it was a domestic terror attract against prosperous blacks(5 civilized tribes native Americans, trail of tears etc).
Thoes planes did happen, 10k kkk showed up, they been searching for Mass graves for the past 2 weeks( mayor had just learned about it also). This massacre was a major turnaround for the black people and the U.S. it is still affecting tulsa.further education on this event would show that this is a subject in need of its own series. This pilot is important, that it Sparks interest of this unknown hidden atrocity to others outside of the black community in tulsa. This work is appreciated and Tulsa will be watching 👍

This process is industrially uncommon, but not that surprising if you're making something from a very creative place. In school and whatever, you're told that music comes after and that's just how most things end up. Lynne Ramsay is known for creating soundscapes, music etc. before she shoots, it just how she works. I did the same for my first short film.

Lindelof is.

    • @christophersmith3005
      @christophersmith3005 4 года назад +1

"Woke" garbage, huh? One of the most disappointing aspects of our great nation is that we live in segregated, alternate realities. As an African American I've been VERY aware of the Tulsa massacre for decades. Not to mention the Rosewood massacre, the Slocum massacre, the Colfax massacre, and over 3,000 lynchings that took place immediately after the Civil War until 1980. There was a lynching of a black man named James Byrd as recently as 1998.
Why were you "flabbergasted"? This is American history. Dark and extremely ugly. Much of this is not taught in middle and high school, so far too many folks are unaware of these events. This means that many Americans are ignorant of the extreme brutality that has been routinely visited upon subsets of the population.
When African Americans and other populations speak out about historical and ongoing injustices, it seems hollow and misguided to Americans who are unaware of this history.
Anyway, I'm glad that you got on board with this truly excellent series.

      @mbrando4403 4 года назад

@@christophersmith3005 sorry, i am not at all surprised that this happened, i was surprised that i didn't know about it.
i always thought the Wounded Knee Massacre where 300 were killed (200 women and children) had no other instances that rivaled it for sheer brutality, so i (wrongly) assumed the massacre in the show was fiction. it is VERY unfortunate that this is the case, as everyone should know this.
but believe me, i KNOW they were capable of it. 13,000 (of 60,000 that is 1/5th) were killed in the Trail of Tears. it is vile that people like to pretend these things didn't happen.

Brasil66 for sure lost has its moments where it’s very broadcast teeveeyee. But as a whole I think there is enough in it that straight up holds up plus you can just binge it and don’t have to wait a week and sit through commercials like we did 10 years ago. I definitely view the show with rose colored glasses cause I watched it with freinds and it was a good time. I will say if you like a lot of oh shit moments or a Damon trademark of for every question answered it asks 5 more than you will enjoy it . Probably one of the most under rated aspects of it is the character backstory and analysis it gets into .

Some folks are just plain mad that Manhattan was black in this show. They have argued it's not true to Alan Moores creation. Now that's interesting... Alan Moore 2017..... “The superheroes themselves - largely written and drawn by creators who have never stood up for their own rights against the companies that employ them, much less the rights of a Jack Kirby or Jerry Siegel or Joe Schuster - would seem to be largely employed as cowardice compensators, perhaps a bit like the handgun on the nightstand,” he said in the interview.
“I would also remark that save for a smattering of non-white characters (and non-white creators) these books and these iconic characters are still very much white supremacist dreams of the master race. In fact, I think that a good argument can be made for D.W. Griffith’s ‘Birth of a Nation’ as the first American superhero movie, and the point of origin for all those capes and masks.”. For those that do not know 'Birth of a nation' was originally called the Clansman and portrayed the KKK in a positive light, it was the 1st film ever showed in the Whitehouse. Alan Moore has not seen this series of the watchmen, but it would seem the shows writers are much more in tune with Moores thinking than people give them credit. Manhattan choosing a black body or its portrayal of white supremacists is evidently not something he would take issue with. If you take issue with it, that is clearly your own warped mind 😉🤷🏿‍♂️

i do agree with him. not everything needs to be given a sequel if the story is already complete. i'm already annoyed with so many sequels left and right, especially when a number of them aren't good or necessary. i respect an artist having an idea, telling a story with a beginning, middle and end. nothing is guaranteed and if he threw the kitchen sink into this 1 season, then i'm sure i'll enjoy the hell out of it instead of 1 mediocre to good season and disappointing followups.
that's something i hope wb/dc continues with now. even with the success of joker, i really hope a sequel doesn't follow. i'd rather see them have their somewhat shared universe, as well as another branch of films (like a dc black label) that are standalone and more creator driven that offer something different in this over crowded genre. not only in film but on television as well. the success of joker and watchmen is proving that. if it's not your taste, i'm sure you can find something that is because there's a lot right now to explore. i just want to see more variety and i feel like i'm getting that right now.

They had a friggin scene in the finale which explicitly explained the framework of what it all was. EVERYTHING that happened on the island was real, it was "real world", and they did have a plan on the smoke monster from the start, they even had to tell the sound affects guy what it was so he'd know how to approach making sounds for it. The ONLY thing that was even remotely "purgatory" were the flash-sideways in season 6, and even that's a stretch. Yes they were in that place after individually dying in the real world but not to be judged, purely to find one another and remember so they could also journey together to... whatever the viewer may define as an "afterlife".

After being patient with this series I've concluded Watchmen is an astonishing dumpster fire. You can see the amazing work everyone is individually contributing--acting, editing, soundtrack, etc. And while the premise is wildly ambitious, the show never comes together. This is an unequivocal failure as a sequel to Moore's classic graphic novel. Damon clearly new this, and I give him credit for doing these promotional interviews. So after watching episode 3, I am liking some things and hating others. Jeremy Irons is killing it, to the point where I wish that this was just his show. Lori is intriguing but not really in line with what was established about her, yet she is interesting still nevertheless.
