- In this video I demonstrate how I joint and carve a quilted maple top in the style of a Les Paul or PRS Singlecut using gouges, thumb planes and scrapers. This was a particularly challenging piece of wood to carve in this way.

Holy shit, you hand carved the top. I cannot imagine that amount of work. Definitely a labor of love. Liked and subscribed.
Hand carving is a really enjoyable thing to do, if you can get past the blisters
Rudy Karo is smiling from up above with a tear in his eye watching you hone that planer
😂
She’s coming to LIFEEEE
Ahh did I mention you got skills ? Excellence WOW ! ❤
Thank you mate
Brilliant work! Enjoyed watching it, but some at double speed. A big thumbs up to you. Thanks for doing the videos.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching
This is looking dope AF.
Thank you mate
Really nice work....top will be so beautiful
Thank you mate, I have captured footage to show you how I do the truss rod access but alas this one was getting too long
Could you do a video explaining the tools and equipment you use? I would like to learn to make my own solid body electric guitar one day. I'm just trying to learn where to start. I checked and my local library didn't have any books on the topic.
I like that trick for sanding the neck angle in using a shim and the thickness sander. I'm totally stealing that idea, hope you don't mind!
Take it, it's yours
That’s was my thought too.
I love seeing all of the different tricks that Luthiers do to get that angle.
Great carving video!😂 Wouldn't it be easier to rout the neck pocket and pickup cavity whilst it was still flat on the top or am I missing something. I am attempting something similar and you are my video guru!
Hi Dave, I route the neck pocket after carving the top because I want the floor of the pocket to be parallel with the top. I route the pickup cavities after the pocket because I need to be sure where the neck is going first. There are other was to do it of course, but this way works for me
@@ADFinlayson makes sense now.... so I presume for a guitar with a neck angle you would plane that into the neck pocket area before attaching the template and routing the pocket?
@@davethain885 correct, there are a few ways to do it. My method is to shim the front of the body and run it under the drum sander.
@@ADFinlayson thanks for the fast replies..much appreciated.
You do beautiful work. Where are parts 3 & 4?
Thank you mate, 3 and 4 are coming, I've just been really busy and haven't had the hours free for editing
Здравствуйте!
Скажите пожалуйста а можно заказать у вас корпус гитары и гриф в форме les Poul?
С доставкой в Россию?
I don’t build kits but even if I did, I would not be able to deliver to Russia
@@ADFinlayson понял Вас, спасибо что ответили
No worries mate, thanks for watching
You must have to recharge your tools a lot, working with quilted maple!
lol, there have been easier tops to carve.
Would a Surform plane not be better than a gouge chisel for rough shaping the edges?
I like to avoid tools that create dust where possible, otherwise I'd use an anglegrinder and get it carved in a a fraction of the time
When you put a plane down you should lay it on it's side, not with the blade facing down. It dulls the blade otherwise.
What was the thin piece sandwiched between the back and top?
Bog oak veneer
@@ADFinlayson Thanks. That build came out incredible! Amazing work 🤘🏼
What is the reason for that veneer you sandwiched?
I like the pinstripe
It wouldn’t hurt to maybe talk a little.Maybe explain to the people watching what your doing.
Building a guitar right will teach you paitience
takes a few to get the patience nailed though!
The most ridiculously stupid methodology I have ever witnessed! 😂
what's that?
If you are going to express an opinion, can you be more specific on what is so ridiculously stupid? I thought this build process can only be completed mostly by hand, since it's not a mass production factory will million dollar tools.
2 beautiful chunks of wood... wasted.
On a pancake.....
You’re a pancake
