Apparently in an early draft of the lyrics, the line went 'Half of my life has gone, but I don't know where'...thought that was a great line too as I often wonder that when I wake up in the morning, though unless I'm going to shatter the world record for the longest living human, I'm pretty sure that more than half of my life has gone! Maybe PS thought he was tempting fate using that line in his 20s. Still like it though!!
I used to listen to this song, The Boxer, . . . constantly filled with emotion (in sound proof booth) at the public library in Charlotte, NC (1984) filled with emotion . . . . Now, in 2021, I am doing the very same thing in a public library (via internet) in Amsterdam with lots of emotion, too . . . . . . .
I like how the bass player respects Joe Osborn's legendary bassline to this, using the same themes and riffs even though some parts have a different layout and phrasing from the original. That's true musicianship.
"this song is for arty" :') I know they've had their artistic differences over the years, but the fact that sentiment of old friends still stands, really makes me happy. Great performance
[ For you &or anyone who didn't or doesn't know: ] The song was *literally* for Art, in that the lyrics are about how Paul felt when he took some time off to vacation in Mexico. He felt alone, like the only, well… listen closely (again).
And it's extra special if you know that this was written by Paul *about Art* , or rather about how he felt about Art taking time out to vacation in Mexico. (Leaving Paul feeling like he was, well…)
paul simon is singing better now than ten years ago. this is a beautiful tune and the sentiment gets me every time. i was lucky to see paul in vicar street in dublin a few weeks back and it was the gig of a life time. i hope they bring this out on a live dvd because this itunes gig is awesome. thanks for posting!!
For my money, this is the best song on the Bridge album (all due respect to the title track). I had been listening to this song/album since college in the Eighties, but my mind was completely blown by the moment in the movie Garden State when this song suddenly and unexpectedly came in, over 12 speakers or whatever it was, at the excessively high volume that movie theater sound always is. Best moment in cinema, for me - admittedly massively biased as a longtime Simon fanboy. Oh yeah, and this here version ain’t bad either!
I got nothing to do today, but smile. Great words to live by.
“Half of the time we’re gone but we don’t know where, we don’t know where...” Bring tears to my eyes.
Still sounds so good..and that bass sounds grate too. Good job.🎸🎸♥️

I'm so happy someone pointed this out and expressed it so well.
What beautiful song. What a way to wake up in the morning

“Half of the time we’re goin’, but we don’t know where, we don’t know where……..”.
I love them both but they really need to put the past behind them before it's too late. The world needs you guys performing together again!
I grew up listening to Paul and Art thanks to my parents being into them. Everytime I listen to these songs its a beautiful feeling.
So beautiful 🌞💕

That bass though … so wonderful … Paul is always incredible
Bravo, a wonderful evocation of the original-song for Arty indeed....
Perfection ♥️♥️♥️

One of my all-tie favorites!

Just shows how little he actually needed Garfunkel. Always loved Simon solo best
True
@jrhalpha Paul Simon is THE greatest singer/songwriter ever, IMO.
IMO….there is No GOAT….But that’s just me, I don’t like listening with that sort of narrow mind
bassist is an absolute force 👌
Bakithi Kumalo, bass player of the Graceland album who played with Paul Simon until his last tour in 2018.
I like it!!! 😊
Great! thanks!
Lindo! 🇧🇷 Obrigada!
Tom Rush please!!!!
He has a lot of people watching him so great 👀
@snoopyprobing So right! At one of his gigs people would have gone nuts as soon as he said Tom (if not strumming the chords)
❤❤❤❤
Why can't I be on that kind of events -.-" ?
The only living boy.. Hira tsy hay hadino.. Taminy lycéen.
Saha ahona ngahy Rasikindrahona... Namana tsy hadino (Kiki)
The bassline
0:43 is Paul crying here?
Tom= dedicated to Art Garfunkel when he was going to Mexico to film a movie
Isn't the bass player brilliant ?
mark stewart messed up the backup vocals at 3:24 ... but that's just ok (lol!!)
Its still a masterpiece 🙂
Goodbye Tom/Art
Capo 4th fret G
The rest of the band wasn't worthy of lighting?
