I could be watching this scene (and movie) thousands of times. This part is crucial to understand and deepen Streep's character right before her meeting with Richard (Ed Harris) I can forget the actor and see Clarissa every time I watch it. I especially love the separation, the emotional distance the set of flowers represent, in the middle of the shop, allowing Atkins' character to "judge" Clarissa with that look, with that impressive rictus. The music at the second half seems to water 💦 the flowers 💐, it's a mixture of uncomfortable and sweet scene at the same time

Meryl Streep 2002 (Clarissa): Oh flowers! What a beautiful morning!
Meryl Streep 2006 (Miranda): Flowers? For spring ? Groundbreaking.

1:20 the song is one of the saddest but in a pleasant way. This scene and the suicide scene are the best. When I saw the movie more than 10 years ago, I cried at this scene. It's the only movie I've ever cried about.

This scene and the next scene where a poem is recited by Virginia about a woman's whole life in a day; simultaneously with a piano score, "Metamorphosis 2" by Phillip glass is just absolutely hauntingly mesmerizing and beautiful. Clarissa carries flowers in her arms walking through a very dark, gray and busy street... you can almost feel what she is feeling.

Her day started and continued with everyone being so critical of both her and the book. She should have told that florist off lol

I never understood why such an incredibly brilliant actress like dame Eileen Atkins took this very small part on a US film; she’s one of my favourites British actresses and she’s always been on UK productions. Ever since I watched this film which I fancy a lot, it always stroke me as odd watching Eileen Atkins playing this role

Why is the florist looking at Clarissa so suspiciously while they were talking about the book?

Because Richard probably wrote personal things about Clarissa in the novel like the fact she's with Sally now and not with him. Since he's a writer, personal stuff turned out to be deeper than they actually are.

The book contained a lot of personal things about everyone involved as is suggested throughout the movie and in the novel. It spoke about Richard's mother at length, but also about Louis and the weird threesome they kind of formed back when they were young, Richard was sleeping with both Clarissa and Louis, I think I remember that Clarissa and Louis gave it a go to be more intimate but it didn't work, probably because Louis was fully gay. However, when the summer ended Richard chose Louis over Clarissa and it is implied that the whole thing was kinda messy, thus the judging look of the florist who would've read all of this from the book on the assumption that it was really about Clarissa.

I want a crossover between this scene and The Room's famous flower shop scene. Hi doggie!

i would watch for the relationship between Streeps charcter and Richard. The scenes with them fresh in my mind. "is my life trival" where is that clip? People trying to be positive. Remember you know the facts and the judge on when at waht one should be grateful for, dont let others tell you how to be based on a fantasy of your life.

The name of the track on the soundtrack album is "Escape!", which itself is an arrangement of an early work of Philip Glass's called "Metamorphosis Two".
